The do's and don'ts when in Dubai and it's Ramadan...(in no way linked in any religious manner and certainly and sincerely not meant to offend anyone who observes Ramadan): 1. Don't run around in the heat of the day. Doesn’t only apply to Ramadan, I know. 2. Don’t expect to be able to eat and drink in public places. 3. Very few restaurants and coffee shops will be open during the day (relative to no 2). 4. Don't expect alcohol to be readily available during Ramadan; even after sundown. 5. It is also frowned upon to swear, argue and procrastinate and one should be kind and considerate to people. 6. Don’t be surprised if you get cold! Now you’ll laugh and think I’m crazy! Having left Phuket and Phi Phi behind us, it was time to ... read more

2nd Island before the desert Our time in Phuket was at an end apart from a one night sleep over before we were flying to Dubai. We had spent four days with our eldest son, had a great time seeing him and a bit of Phuket and were now going to spend four days on our own on Phi Phi. The previous time we came to Phuket we only spent a couple of hours on Phi Phi and wanted to spend a bit more time on it and were hoping to dive and snorkel. At Phuket we couldn’t snorkel because the sea was too rough and dirty. Another difference from the last time we were in Phuket, because we spent hours snorkelling around the rocks at the ends of the beaches because the sea was so ... read more

Our plan was to meet up with our eldest son in Phuket and then our youngest in Dubai and throw in a few days for ourselves in the middle. During the process though, a few visa issues and political unrest in Thailand. Such a contrast from a tropical island to a desert but both with their heat and humidity. Let me fill you in on some of our family dynamics: Our eldest son has been living in Sydney, Australia for a few years now and about 4 months ago our youngest son also flew out the nest to a distant destination as well and now lives in Dubai. The main idea of this holiday, which was arranged last year, was to go to Phuket to meet up with Jacques and celebrate his 30th birthday with him ... read more

Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you. You must travel it by yourself. It is not far. It is within reach. Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know. Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land.” ― Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass Just in case my travelblog followers have thought I have disappeared in preparation for a trip to the outer galaxy with a one way ticket to Mars, sorry to disappoint you, I am still on the Blue Planet. Ok, I could start a few crops in a hothouse to help establish the settlement while singing Space Oddity by David Bowie, but I think the lyrics of this well known song will eventually drive me scatty as much as I enjoy listening ... read more

What is it with the weather and Bush Babes outreaches? Waking up to the sound of rain in the middle of Thursday night reminded me of our last visit to the wolf sanctuary. Heavy rains, sorely needed by the Free State farmers after a long dry spell. This time seemed to be exactly the same, but there's no excuse when it's raining. The forecast was heavy rain for at least a week. We had already postponed this visit to the Husky Romi Rescue & Wolf sanctuary and couldn't put it off any longer. So we had to just suck it up, don our wellies and put on some lipstick, grab our spades and picks and hit the road. Besides a little bit of mud and rain never put off the Bush Babes and we were given ... read more

It’s mid December. By then if you haven't left already, you were about to leave for an annual pilgrimage either to the coast or the bush and for some even an international destination. Either way, Johannesburg is less busy as vehicles are packed, swimming attire, bush clobber or fancy feathers. So where are we going? Nowhere actually. This year is completely different to our normal December holidays. Our eldest son, Jacques is visiting us from Australia, so we are spending Christmas at home. Philip, our youngest son will then also be able to spend Christmas with us as he usually house sits for us when we go away. Mom is still with us, recuperating from her back operation of three months ago. This will be her first Christmas at one of her children's homes, although she ... read more

So what is a Bush babe? Not the cute, furry primate you find in the bush climbing up trees, although there are many cute babes in our group of all ages, the youngest being 6 months old – it might take a while for her to get her drivers licence, though! You could possibly find us wearing fur too (feaux fur of course, because we are all animal lovers!). What's more, we do go to the bush as well as many other places, doing our own form of climbing in 4x4's on off road trails, testing our skills. But that's not all we do. We try out new adventures, pumping natural adrenalin through our bodies while amongst other things, going abseiling, scuba diving, sand boarding and swimming with dolphins. Another priority of ours is to be ... read more

Mom's 80th birthday bash.....it was a bit touch and go, not sure if we were going to fulfil her birthday wishes, as mom had to undergo a spinal fusion with a bone graft, plates and screws just 8 weeks before her birthday due to two fractured vertebrae. A couple of days in ICU because of cardiac arrest and vital signs going for a loop, we were all in a spin, because we were very concerned about her. In the background we were still planning her birthday, but we thought it would never materialise and at the most we would all have to fly down to Cape Town and have a subdued celebration either at her home or next to a hospital bed. We didn’t even want to think of anything worse than that. Mom's birthday wish: ... read more

The other day I heard someone say that conversation can be likened to a tree. You start a conversation and while you are talking about one thing a single word will change the conversation, in other words branch out, to another topic and so it continues. This got me thinking that travelling could definitely be compared to the life cycle of a tree. Root or seed - The intended destination or journey is germinated in your brain and so the thought process is propagated until it eventually bears fruit. Whether it is an image, conversation or something you read, it sparks the idea of choosing that trip. The idea of a trip slowly starts unfolding, becoming a possibility and eventually a reality. Trunk or main stem - I would like to call this the foundation and ... read more

'Southern Africa, Land of Beauty and Splendour'by Thomas Victor Bulpin, a Readers Digested edition. Many years ago I bought this book with it's dramatic pictures of storms approaching and breathtaking scenic photography. It ignited the fire in me to see more of South Africa, one of the catalysts that drew me towards the Drakensberg in the late 1970's for a holiday. South Africa was a land of contrasts then and is even more so today. Paul's mom visited us from Cape Town for a few weeks in June this year and we decided to take her on a short trip to one of our favourite places for a weekend, because we knew she would enjoy it there. At the age of 79, we love to give her the opportunity to go away with us while she ... read more
