15th of August, Day 3: Arequipa to Colca Canyon Chivay I have an apology for some of the odd words that have popped up in the blog - thanks to the predictive text. I also have an addition to make to yesterday's blog. Something I tried to forget. At one point, instead of being in the crowd we ended up on the road as the parade. We got a great reception from the crowd we were walking in front of. Well we thought we did but it was more Liz who was coming down the road behind the rest of us acting like a pork chop and doing a jig. We had an early start and were picked up at about 8:00 am. It took most of the day to travel the 160km from Arequipa to ... read more

14 Aug Day 2: City of Arequipa Things were decidedly cool at the breakfast table this morning between Pen and Koala. We went to catch the bus for our four hour tour and found the square blocked off. Three got through the barriers and two didn't. More of that later. The square was blocked off for practice for tomorrow's celebrations for Arequipa Day (foundation day in 1541 - about 472 years). Well we think it was practice. The reason we are in doubt is because the Present of Peru turned up today (Don managed to get a photo) but unfortunately not while I was there because Liz, Garry and I literally had front row seats. Did I mention that the practice was by the Military - Army, Navy and Airforce. The uniforms here are quite spectacular. ... read more

13 Aug Day 1: Lima to Arequipa Well where do I start? It seems everyone had much of a normal night of sleep. I woke up during the and couldn't get back to sleep for some time - not that that is normal. Everyone was up and about early with breakfast at 8:00am. All except for pen that is. He was quite ill after last night so back to cargo for him. He was warned so no sympathy. Our transport arrived just before 9:30am to take us to the airport for our flight to Arequipa (the QU is pronounced K). It was Jorge again. Nice bloke but doesn't say much. Probably just thinks "bloody" tourists. The ride back to the airport was again interesting but we were able to see the perils in the daylight. However, ... read more

The flight did leave on time and was about half an hour or more early to arrive. So after more than a year in the concept and planing, here I am in South America! Strange thing is that coming in to land it didn't look that much different to the Australian country side with farms and farm houses with junk all around. Well that's if one ignores the fact that the plane is flying down a corridor between two spectacular snow capped mountain ranges. From what I could see, the vegetation around Santiago didn't look that different either. The temperature is 7 degrees. We had a couple of hours lay-over at the airport and then back on the plane on the next leg of the adventure. And team Qantas has forged out in front again. Somehow ... read more

12th of August We all had a great sleep and if not all refreshed we certainly got up feeling better. Went to breakfast a bit before 9:30 - late start. With a free morning we decided to go for a walk in the local area which is called Miraflores. The Spanish broke Lima into 16 districts of which Lima is one. We went for a walk to a plaza that looks over the beach. Its a beach captain but not as we know it, not as we know it. Its covered in what look like bloody great river stones - which is what the soil seems to be made up of. They'd look great in the ground above the ground. Unfortunately it was overcast and hazy so we couldn't see great distance. Our walk then took ... read more

Talk about a start for the trip. I had a call last night from Qantas at about 10pm. "Are you Philip Gates flying to Sydney on Flight QF400?" Here we go I thought. The news was that my flight had been changed and I was to go on another flight - Direct to Oakland. Do not enter Sydney do not get mucked around there. It meant getting up an hour earlier but well and truly worth it in my books. No queues at customs I got my GST back without any hassles - no fuss, no problems, no hassle! So here I am in not so sunny Auckland waiting for three of the five to catch up. Two of us from Melbourne got diverted and two, we think, had to go through Sydney. The fifth is ... read more

If you don't want to receive updates just request to be removed from the list ... and you will be. Before I leave I would like to introduce you to a travelling companion - Pen. Pen is a utility pen so we have agreed that he will travel baggage class. He's not to worried about this as he feels more akin to baggage rather than cattle. Don't feel too sorry for Pen he will have a travelling companion in Baggage - Koala Anyway I'm ... read more
