We all had a great sleep and if not all refreshed we certainly got up feeling better. Went to breakfast a bit before 9:30 - late start. With a free morning we decided to go for a walk in the local area which is called Miraflores. The Spanish broke Lima into 16 districts of which Lima is one.
We went for a walk to a plaza that looks over the beach. Its a beach captain but not as we know it, not as we know it. Its covered in what look like bloody great river stones - which is what the soil seems to be made up of. They'd look great in the ground above the ground. Unfortunately it was overcast and hazy so we couldn't see great distance.
Our walk then took us to Parque Capital De Miraflores. For the dog lovers amongst us this park was hell - it was full of CATS of all descriptions. Right next door was Parque Kennedy so named for J. F. Kennedy which had a great kids play ground. Both parks are new and are part of the extensive beautification happening in Miraflores.
Along the way we
found the Cafe Italiano and decided to have lunch there... but the food took a while to arrive and we thought we'd miss our bus for the afternoon tour so we bolted our food down and ran back to the hotel only to find that the bus probably wouldn't arrive for another hour.
The bus tour took us through Lima in its 3 historical periods: Pre-hispanic, Colonial and Modern. We first saw a panoramic view of “La Huaca Pucllana”. to the untrained eye, us, it looked like a very impressive pile of dirt but at the other end its being restored and does look impressive. We then visited the Historical Downtown of Lima with its palaces, mansions and squares. This tour conspired with a tour of includes the Complejo Monumental San Francisco and its Catacombs which was built, as its name suggests by the Franciscan Monks. There are 12,000 people buried in the catacombs in a period of over 200 years. For a reason we couldn't establish, teams of people have come along and neatly arranged the bones according to classification eg femur, skulls etc. All very organised but even the guide didn't seem to know why.
Every-one
Every-where
Look closely, there are about six cats in that bit of garden knows that what happens on the trip stays on the trip - se? Well not with me in Peru!
Last night when we got here we got to our rooms (I'm sharing with Garry) and my question was how do we get in the door? Ans: you use the "credit card" entry key. Problem there's no lights. Ans: you use the credit card thing in the slot with the lights (Der).
So tonight Garry went in first to show me how its done. (Garry) I can't get the card in the slot. Ans: you use the slot with lights - not the light switch.
Then Don wanted to get money out of the machine. Ans: you use the ATM - not the public phone.
And then Liz and Maz. Well they wanted to know how to hold up an entire coach load of tourists. Ans: go shopping and insist on getting your S/. 15.00 change. But that was OK because according to the tour guide "Marylina is the most important person" ...and he actually said it being nice.
Oh yes pen had his first real outing today. It must have been a long trip in
cargo...
