And so after 32 long hours of travel, we were back in the U.S. It was a wonderful trip and I am so glad that my mom and I got the chance to travel together again. A perfect part II to our previous trip and a great precursor for future trips to come. I guess the best way to end this blog is to finish with some of my favorite pictures from our trip. ... read more

Before my mom and I bid farewell to India, we visited one more city--Madurai--located at the very south of India. By visiting Madurai, we unintentionally traveled the whole length of India, starting just north of the country with Nepal and ending up at the very bottom. In Madurai, we visited two temples, a palace, the Gandhi museum and found time for a little unplanned shopping and south indian fare (Thali, Flooda, and south indian coffee)--yum! The highlights of this short jaunt were def. being blessed by an elephant (picture below), seeing the Meenaskshi temple, and going through the Gandhi museum. Also worth mentioning is that the first night that we were in Madurai was a lunar eclipse. We didn't stay up to see the actual eclipse, but we were greeted by a beautiful full moon when ... read more

About an hour and a half from Bangalore is what is called the Stone Cutters Village. Here is where the villagers, craftsmen really, chisel granite rock into likenesses of gods and large pillars. Most of the pieces created are commissioned by temples or by wealthy Indians. This village has not yet been truly discovered by tourists and because of this, we were greeted by the villagers with stares instead of waves and several of them stopped to actually take pictures of us! (this was utterly humbling as I have a tendency to go a little crazy taking pictures of the villagers. it feels weird to be on the flip side of things) but for the most part, the craftsman went on working on their projects and let us look on if we liked. The statues that ... read more

...And so after a day of traveling we made it to Bangalore. Actually, we got here on the 11th, but things move slow here (especially the internet... oops did I say that about the IT capital of the world? just kidding ;). It has been wonderful to see my aunt, uncle, and cousins. They have been feeding us so much good Indian food and taking very good care of us. And of course my mom and I have been doing a lot of shopping (my bags and stomach are very full and my wallet is very empty). ... read more

Tigers, Monkeys, and Stars, Oh My! Rathambore is very beautiful, the people are sweet, and the wildlife is fantastic. If there was one place I could pick to go back to right away, it would be Ranthambore. We went on 3 4-hour safaris-- one at 6:30 am and two at 2:30pm on different days. Going on Safari The open air jeep holds six people including a driver and a guide. The jeep is small and has no seat belts. As we traversed through the Ranthambore park, I had to hold on to any part of the jeep that I could to keep from falling out (and at times, it felt like it was not enough!). At the gate of the park, the guide stops and registers the jeep. One person from the jeep (usually me ... read more

After our time in Kathmandu, we drove through the countryside for about 1 1/2 hours until we reached a tiny mountain village called Nagarkot. This village is 3000 ft. above the Kathmandu valley. It is high enough that you feel like you are encircled by the mountains. Our hotel was circular in design with large windows which allowed guests to see the mountains from every angle. The village of Nagarkot is small, but there seems to be much less poverty visable there than in Kathmandu. Their main industries are brick making (the soil is very rich and makes good bricks), pine wood for building, and mustard (the mustard plants fill the hillside, they are about 2 ft tall and have small yellow flowers). Each family in Nagarkot has a small brick house with a wood burning ... read more

Kathmandu smells of incense and sounds of a mixture of constant conversations, bicycle wheels spinning, and Nepalese music. In the places that we traveled, we were forced to come face to face with the many problems of the city--traffic, gas and electricity shortages, poverty, and political unrest. Despite those difficulties, I found the people to be very sincere, welcoming, and ready with a smile. Some of the highlights of our time in Kath. include walking through the old and new palace squares (the buildings and temples are made of brick with intricate carved wood panels below the windows), flying around the Himalyas at sunrise, visiting the largest Stupa in the world (see the next entry), and going to Thamel (a series of crazy windy street with lots of shops and "Western-like" resturants) with a former HS/HSL ... read more

It was a very long flight to Delhi--14 hours-- but atleast we were on a plane. The big uncertainty was whether our bags were on the plane with us. Continental was unwilling to confirm this for us upon our numerious phone calls. My first picture in India was going to be of my mom and I hugging our luggage , but by the time we found the bags (they had apperently traveled to India a day before us and were in lock-up until we arrived), I wanted nothing more than to get the heck out of the airport (plus the bags were being kept by men in military uniforms who most likely had guns and probably wouldn't enjoy the photo opp.). After our guide found us and we began our 45 minute drive to the hotel, ... read more

The plan: My mom would fly from Cleveland to Newark Friday afternoon. I would fly from BWI to Newark at the same time. After a two hour layover, we would board the flight CO82 to Delhi at 8:40pm and arrive 14 hours later-- Saturday night Delhi time. The reality: I don't think I have ever been so happy to see a airplane come in as I was last night at 10:10 pm when my mom's flight came in to the Newark airport from Cleveland. After finding out that my flight from BWI to Newark had been canceled and rushing to make a train up to NJ with only minutes to spare-- I came to find out my mom's flight was still on the ground in Cleveland! Several frustrating calls to Continental and many laps in the ... read more

Today, I begin my trip to India--part deux. I was amazingly lucky enough to go once and now I feel even more so to be able to go again. Last time, my mom and I were unable to go to url=http://www.worldtravelwatch.com/06/01/nepal-curfews-lifted-political-unrest-continues-elections-to-go-on.html Nepal because it was facing political unrest at the time and we were unable to go to Rathambore National Park because it was too darn hot --so now, we are trying both and adding a stop over at my aunt's as well as a quick trip to Madurai . Here is our itinerary so far: DELHI NAGARKOT NEPAL RANTHAMBORE BANGALORE MADURAI HOME I am adding four of my favorite pictures from my last trip to this entry.
