Day 4 We are up around 6:00. Before breakfast the hotel manager show us around the gardens where they have erected nesting boxes for Eagle Owls (none in residence at the moment). Our next stop is the Featherbed Preserve. We drive to a dock on the Knysna estuary and board a ferry to the preserve. The goal here is to take a nature walk from the top of the promontory to the restaurant below for lunch under the milk wood trees. We pick up walking sticks as the trail is steep, rutted and anything but smooth. It's 2 1/2k and we expect to take two hours. Much of the trail is shaded which is a blessing as the South African sun is intense. Here and there we break out of the thicket to glorious views of ... read more

Day 3 This morning we had our last game drive. After sighting the usual suspects, we went in search of lion but instead landed in the middle of a herd of elephant. There were at least fifteen adults and numerous babies from a couple of years down to a couple of months. We skipped our morning coffee stop to spend more time with them as they grazed next to the truck. Imagine, being eye to eye with a teenage elephant. After breakfast we boarded the bus for our next stop,Knysna ( K is silent). We meet our driver Alfred and our guide Donovan. They will shepherd us to Cape town and drop us at the airport on our last morning in the country. We will be moving west along the "garden route". The landscape changes from ... read more

Day 2 we wake at 5:15 and walk to the restaurant for coffee. By six we were on the trail and exploring. An immature giraffe stood sentinel as we slowly drove by. There are herds grazing in the field; a couple of giraffe browsed the trees on the hill and it was like peaceable kingdom. We are heading to the river for a short cruise but stop to watch a herd of rhino head across the road to a preferred grazing spot. They are huge animals. You can get a sense of their size by looking at one next to a Trail Blazer. Included in the group is the female whose horn had been poached. She seemed to be doing fine. We continue on our quest, fording streams swollen by the rains. This powerful vehicle and ... read more

Not going bore you with the four am wake up or the 7:30 arrival at JFK. Not going to detail the 14 1/2 hour fight to Johannesburg or passport control and customs or the 1.2 hour flight to Port Elizabeth or the bus ride to Kareiga Game Reserve mainly because I cat napped all the way. We arrived in time for lunch, checked in , ate a bite and were off on our first game drive. A note about Kareiga. It is privately owned and has been in operation for about twenty years. Formerly the area, about 22,000 acres was farm and ranch land. The perimeter has been enclosed with an electric fence and the animals are free to roam. There is plenty of grassland for the gnu, waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, wildebeest, ostrich, giraffe and rhino ... read more

Thursday started out fine. Mary, Pat and I headed out to Galway for lunch at Moran' s Oyster Cottage outside of Clarenbridge. The highways in Ireland are great and we left Tullamore around 10:45 and arrived at the weir around 12:30. It was a beautiful sunny day. The cottage looked as we remembered it and we were all pleased to see them doing a fine business. The Moran family nearly lost the restaurant during the crisis due to bad investments but this season was the best ever according to the owner's wife. Pat and I had salmon and potato cakes and then steamed mussels. Outrageous, fresh and tender! Mary had a grilled sandwich that she declared delicious. We were back home by four and just chilled for the evening. Mariam stopped by and we settled in ... read more

The days are filled with good conversation and trips to local sights. Mick took us to the Locke Distillery. This is the oldest distillery in the world dating from 1509 and parts of the old factory are still operating. The waterwheel that powered the grinding wheels is still turning and the gears that turn the drive shaft are still doing their job. The display was very well done, providing enough information to understand the process and history but not so much that you get bored or feel overwhelmed. The "new" distillery is much the same except the power is electric and the stills are new, shiny copper. A woman was there to check the temperature of the still. Upstairs the were four huge mash vats. These are two stories tall and contain the milled grains and ... read more

BOO, not. After coffee with Mary and Mick we headed off. Monday morning traffic and road construction made the ride more stressful than on the weekend but we soon turned off the main road onto a narrow lane that was much less traveled. The sun has been trying to breakthrough but with no success. These are the roads I remember from our first trip here, barely enough room for two cars to pass, hedgerows on either side breaking for a view of cows or sheep grazing in the pasture. We reached Montrath where Mommy was born and stopped in a cafe for lunch. All I can say is too much food! Then we headed out to Kinnitty Castle. To get to Kinnitty from Montrath we head through the Slieve Bloom Mountains. Story is that these provided ... read more

Sunday morning was bright as we went downstairs for breakfast. Actually we were not so hungry after our feast last night. We packed up and headed back to Tullamore stopping along the road for photo ops of the Wicklow Gap. From forested hillsides to rocky plains it was a beautiful sight. The glacial valley has steep sides and a river tumbling over the boulders and down to the sea. There were ruins along the river edge that I would have loved to explore if we had a bit more time. We tried another route home and except for a bit of confusion around Kildare it was much shorter. Mick and Mary were waiting for us with the news that we had been invited to dinner with Liam and Miriam. Before that we drove out to the ... read more

Today Mary, Theresa, Pat and I took off for Birr for lunch and a walk around the Demesne (grounds) of Birr Castle. Birr is an up and coming town and the Loft Cafe was a great choice. It is a boutique setting with Irish made goods with a dozen small tables scattered throughout. There is a dining terrace but with the weather being what it is we sat inside. Mary wasn't hungry so she had tea and scones, Theresa had a bagel with cream cheese but Pat and I were famished and had a real meal. Pat had a lovely veg soup with a chicken salad sandwich. I had a beautiful ham, leek, small potato tart (quiche) with a lovely Waldorf salad. We also had an extraordinary Chilean Chardonnay. We walked the Main Street, window shopping ... read more

Well the Irish liquid sunshine is still with us but not dampening our spirits. The plants and the farmers are happy. After a quiet morning Mick took us to the Offaly Historic Society located on a newly revamped canal side walkway. There were lots of books and pamphlets for sale and a research center attached for those who wished to trace their ancestry. We tiptoed through the raindrops to the Bond Store for a lovely roasted red pepper soup and brown bread with Miriam and Liam. This complex has been renovated as well and pays homage things that made Tullamore special. One of these is Tullamore Dew Irish Whisky. My father-in-law used to bring me back a bottle when he traveled here in the 60's. The current owner is building a huge distillery complex and bond ... read more
