Blog 5 Kristiansund/Atlantic Ocean Road/Trondheim/Bergen/Stavanger/Oslo Slow start today for our overnight stop in Kristiansund – we had 190kms to cover but now we were used to calculating the correct time for the little windy roads. Heading out of Alesund we encountered lots of roadwork including a very large bridge being built. You have to give it to the Norwegians – they are terrific bridge and road tunnel builders. Drove in the direction of a town called Molde. The ferry crossing over the fjord was once again another lovely way to pass 40 mins. We were also in the habit of heading straight up the ferry stairs to the café for a yummy hot chocolate. Arriving in Molde we parked the car and enjoyed a walk around the city centre. Molde is known as the city of ... read more

Sunday July 5 – Urnes Stave Church, Jostedal Glacier, Geirgangerfjord Ferry, Trollstevegen and Alesund Breakfast the next morning was a local food tasting feast. Apple juice from the local fruit farm, brown goat cheeses, local honey, Flam bacon and specialty sausages, hot smoked fish from Alesund, and so many other delicacies. We thought we may as well try the lot so breakfast took quite a while – we didn’t care because we didn’t want to leave this wonderful little peace of heaven. Ah all good things come to an end and we checked out. Didn’t go far – just 30 metres across the garden to catch the 15 minute ferry ride to Ernes. The reason for doing this was to visit the UNESCO listed Urnes Stave Church. The church is the oldest preserved stave church in ... read more

Saturday July 4 Driving Along the Fjords to Solvern –After a late bedtime trying to sort out a major computer issue we were again up early to collect our Avis rental car. Learnt the new road rules, speed limits of 50 or 70kph and it is compulsory to drive with lights on. The roads are very narrow and windy and it takes ages to get from A to B. Also there are kilometres of tunnels some as long as 26kms hence the need for lights. Picking up the car was easy but getting out of Bergen was tricky because the car did not have a USB adapter for our TomTom. So it was back to Leanne the map navigator and Graham the driver, reading the signs and finding our way out of Bergen. For a while ... read more

Europe 2015 Blog 2 Tuesday 30 June – Train from Stockholm to Oslo, Norway - departed the hotel with heavy suitcases and golf bags for another walk to the railway station – having been there so many times by now we knew exactly which platform to head for – platform 15 to board the 7.58am Stockholm-Oslo express. Boarding was like a cattle stampede and of course we had to heave all the luggage up the stairs along with others who were unable to lift their gear up the steep train steps. Then the aisles were jammed with people trying to locate seats and shove luggage anywhere it would fit. We ended up with our gear spread from one end of the carriage to the other. A lovely young tall Norwegian guy helped Graham lift the golf ... read more

Europe 2015 Blog 1 Monday 15 June – Early wake up call at 4.15 for the neighbours to drive us to the airport. Just as we arrived at the airport we received a text message to say our flight to Sydney had been cancelled. Ignoring the message we bowled into the airport to see what our options were. Two seats were available on the 6 am flight to Sydney. Problem fixed and all luggage (2 suitcases and 2 golf bags) checked thru to Copenhagen. Tuesday 16 June - 32 hours later we arrived at Copenhagen (6.30am local time). No big queues at the Custom gates and a 15 min ride in the train to the centre of Copenhagen. 60 minutes later we checked into the Opera Hotel. Set off immediately to explore Copenhagen - used the ... read more

Vancouver Island to Whistler (2 Aug – 13 Aug) Friday 2 Aug – Start of the Canadian National Day Long Weekend Joined a big queue of tourists and caught the ferry at Anacortes – beautiful town 3 hours north of Tacoma. The 2 hr 15 min ferry crossing bought back great memories of our 2010 cruise to Vancouver Island. The big difference this time was the islands in the San Juan Strait were sunburnt and brown – not green and misty. Arrived at the port of Sidney and drove into beautiful Victoria City. After the 7 lane freeways of Seattle the driving was so calm, quiet and relaxing – easily located our hotel - just one block back from the waterfront. Found a terrific Thai Restaurant and spent the evening wandering the waterfront with ... read more

2013 USA and Canada Golfing Holiday - Hi from the retirees 21 July - had a great trip with Qantas to Los Angeles. The A380 Airbus was fitted out with a SkyCam Camera. It was kind of freaky watching our own plane take off and land - Leanne was checking carefully that the pilot had it lined up with the white line - not that she could do anything about it if it was off target. It turned out to be our fastest flight to LA thanks to two on board medical emergencies which resulted in a priority landing – straight in, no circling and the paramedics and fire dept were waiting on the ground. We landed 45 minutes earlier than scheduled – so they weren’t messing around. Lauren, QANTAS was awesome with the GF food. ... read more

Ireland 2012 Blog 2 Cliffs of Mohr to Old Head Thursday 13 Sept - set out to walk the Cliffs of Mohr in very windy, showery conditions. Luckily the showers cleared and we had lots of photographic opportunities at this beautiful place. On our previous visit to these cliffs in 2007 we had seen a lady playing the harp on the walking trail beside the cliffs. As we were driving to the cliffs, we joked about maybe seeing her again and sure enough there she was. We purchased another of her CD’s. We walked right out to the end of cliffs passed the “do not enter” sign that everyone seemed to be ignoring and took loads of photos of the breath taking views. We then headed to the visitors centre for a well-earned lunch. In the ... read more
