Geo: 51.9932, -4.97503Still on a mission to get home by sea and we discovered if we got afternoon sailing from Fishguard the next day to Rosslare we'd have missed the last train to Dublin by 20 mins! So it was easier to head off on the 6th at 21:42 from Bristol Parkway and get the night sailing at 2.45 from Fishguard via train to Cardiff and Swansea which is another friends home town but sadly we didn't have time to stop off (cost £24 each which was amazingly good to Rosslare, all told it was 14 hours door to door but it sounds worse than it was) and we even managed a kip on the boat.... read more

Train was 30 mins late but no info. board in the station could actually be bothered to say when expected departure time was, privatisation, ch. £48 one way each. Passed through 2 friends home towns Reading and Bath. Sun still splitting the rocks so next afternoon was spent in Clifton overlooking the ace suspension bridge.... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels August 3rd 2007

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761Arrived in Brussels Midi 20 mins late at 6.30am and had to collect tickets for 9.59 eurostar to London but as tickets fully flexible we had time to make the 7.05am one which was cool. You collect tickets at 'Rail Connections office' and you check in here too for the eurostar passing your luggage through xray (the 1st train we had to do it on but also the only tunnel we had to go through) and we didn't need to go through Paris. Train not busy but bizarrely all the passengers were seated together - they give you seat numbers and announce you should be in them not that this seemed to apply as far as Lille in France. Train was very fast takes 2.5 hours and we seemed to be in France for ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236London 3rd-5th Aug Arrived in Waterloo at 8.30am, got tube to Charing Cross (£4 each for 2 stops, Good God I know I should've got a day pass but that's beside the point). Walked to our beautiful 5 star hotel One Aldwych (treat for roughing it on trains, ahem). Had time for naps and showers before meeting our best man for lunch, which took ages and then only had time for quick wander around before more naps and going to see 'Doctor John' in The Dome or 'The O2' as it's now stupidly called. Dr. John was brilliant with Abe Wilson and the Delta jazz trio supporting. Afterwards our best man took us to Soho drinking club 'Milk and Honey' which was good.Next day after a £22 breakfast (but it was lovely) we lounged ... read more

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115First class train to Berlin (59euro) not too impressive as we had no table! 6 hours 17 mins later we were 36 mins late arriving in Berlin (not too bad?). Last stop in Poland was called Rzepin where we stopped for 20 mins to get passports checked and the 1st stop German side is 'Frankfurt Oder'.We had a 5 hour lay over in Berlin Ost station and I can think of worse places to have to do it - like Berlin Central. Berlin Ost is really nice with loads of eateries and beer and lovely staff. And outside we could see the East Berlin TV tower we were in a few years ago which was cool. We are not stopping over properly in Berlin or Brussels as we have been to both in the ... read more

Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw August 1st 2007

Geo: 52.26, 21.02Am really surprised by how nice Warsaw is, old town is lovely and as it was bombed to rubble (like even the cobble stones were shattered) in WWII they have made an amazing reconstruction job of it. It just looks old but sand-blasted. So to get there we had to go past the palace of culture (the Russian 7 sister look a like) & go down Marzalkowska past H&M shops and the like & then up Krakowskie Przedmiesuc til we got to the Copernicus monument & Holy Cross Church and onto Stare Miasto and Plac Zamkowy that has a castle marking start of old town which itself is all pedestriaised with lots of nice cafes and bars. Was a lovely day so had lunch outdoors in old town sq. in Jacekiplacek creperie.Later we found ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków July 29th 2007

Geo: 49.9989, 19.9907Got the express train to Krakow 2 hrs and 25 mins (192zloyts/52 eur). Lovely train, 6 berth cabin this time with complimentary tea and bisc. and we have it to ourselves for the 1st hour, seems like 1st class but it isn't. From Krokow Glowny (central) we could walk to Old town to our hotel Mokolaj on Mikolajskia 30, very nice attic room and nice possibly stoned reception staff. So we start our investigations on Rynek Glowny (largest medieval sq. in Europe), after avoiding some loud brits we had nice lunch etc. Then did a big walk past market stalls Sukiennice and the Mariacki church - finest gothic structure in the country - with its human trumpeter tooting in ever hour and giving a wave. Then up Ulica Florianska the main drag and up to ... read more

Geo: 52.26, 21.02Got the 11.47am (which left at 11.45am!) train to Warsaw via Sestokai -30 min stop at the Lithuanian border, there were allocated seat numbers but this meant nothing, Lithuanian 2nd and only class was fine but stuffy. The second train was Polish and nicer with 8 seats to a compartment (again seat nums. meant nothing) which we shared with an old old Lithuanian man til just over the Polish border at 18.10 and a french couple til Bialystok at 7pm (there were loads of horrible teenagers on board so we were happy), clocks go back an hour at this point. Then we were joined by a drunk Pole who kept shouting 'Bolsheviks', thankfully he fell asleep but then the bloody ticket man woke him so we had 2 more hours of him in full ... read more
