We had planned to allow ourselves to sleep as late as we wanted the next morning, but as it turned up we were up by nine. I went down the street and drank my first Italian cappuccino standing at the bar at Bar Fibbi. It was delicious. I grabbed a stuffed croissant to go, and stopped at the bread store for a square of pizza bianca. We feasted on the goodies and our left over fruit on the terrace, packed up our cameras and water and headed out. Our first stop was Mercato Centrale, which was overwhelming. We wandered the downstairs and saw the meat and cheese shops, then headed outside to wander the clothes markets. The flight in was gorgeous. We saw the Swiss Alps, and the rolling hills of Tuscany from the air. Originally we had planned to fly into Rome, and I had not been looking forward to navigating that airport. I am so glad we decided to fly into Florence because after about 22 hours straight of travel, landing in Florence’s Peretola Airport was a dream. I was anticipating a long waits for the tram to the terminal and for baggage, based on a few Tripadvisor reports I’d read about Florence’s airport. However we were off the plane, into the terminal and had our bag in less than ten minutes! I was worried because we had lost our luggage tags, but we walked out of the airport, across the street and onto the Volain-bus - with no problem ... read more

We were scheduled to leave for Italy on Sunday June 13 at 9am. Given that I had been planning this trip for about five years, seriously planning it for 18 months and that trip planning and preparation had been my only hobby for about six months, we should have been ready. But of course we weren’t. As always, the day before the trip was a rush of chaos and confusion. Now, the chaos wasn’t all that surprising. I was coming off a year of hell at work (it’s called “articles”), had just gotten back from a 10-day trip to Calgary to see my family Thursday morning at 8am, which was followed by a series of errands (including the signing of our first mortgage) during the day and a reception at work Thursday evening.
