I like to travel, and this year has been a big trip year! I thought this blog might be a way to share my adventures with my friends, family, and anyone else who is interested.

There was really only time to pack, have breakfast, and start the long journey home in the morning. We packed carefully, my journals and our wine glasses in our carry-ons. We walked over to the nearest vaparetto stop where we could catch a vaparetto to the airport. These take separate tickets, which I wasn’t aware of, but it wasn’t a big deal - still a cost effective way to travel. The vaparetto trip took about an hour and a half. When you get off the vaparetto, it is about a ten minute walk to the airport terminal. Ahead of us was a small family who had taken the vaparetto with us. “You said it wasn’t hot in Venice,” one of the kids whined. “You said the water kept it cool”. “Yes, I said that.” The exhausted ... read more

We headed straight over to Murano the next day, to see the legendary glass. Sam refused to follow the crowds stepping off the boat to a glass museum where we were all being directed by an enthusiastic promoter, even though I was afraid we would not get to see a glass blowing demonstration! Instead, we began wandering the island, looking at all of the glass do-dads, enjoying the atmosphere. Almost immediately Sam saw a blown glass bowl with blown glass fish in it. He fell in love. Sam is not a consumer, and hates shopping. I have very rarely seen him want anything (except the occasional computer game). Generally he buys only what he has to, only when he really has to. I have certainly never seen him want anything just because it was pretty. But ... read more

We started the morning walking along the Venice Boardwalk, seeing some cruise ships come in, others docked. We tried to have an early morning to see St. Marks somewhat empty and to see the actual church, which had been too crowded the last time we were there. Alas, everyone - including the day cruisers - had the same idea. Although we arrived just after nine the line up stretched all the way across the square almost to the Boardwalk - longer than our previous attempt. And, the church didn’t open until 10 - so we opted not to wait. We climbed the Campanile instead, a crowded experience, and the only tower in all our travels with a gift shop at the top. Still, we positioned ourselves to watch the little men hit the bell from far ... read more

Sam had wanted to see the painted houses of Burano since the first day he read about them on the Internet. We decided a day off the main island would do us well, and so after a charming little breakfast at our B&B, we headed out. We took the Vaparetto#1 to the Fond Nova stop, then got on the Vaparetto to Burano. The ride was long and hot but there was so much to look at, it didn’t matter. Finally, finally the Vaparetto hit Burano. We hopped off, with everyone else, and started walking. We walked around that whole little island, loving the little coloured houses. It was stiflingly hot, so there were a few gelato stops and a few moments of sitting in the shade under churches but I am happy to say no further ... read more

I had booked us the famed “Secret Itineraries” tour of the Doges Palace. This was also the first time we would see San Marco up close. We were switching hotels today and before we checked out, I made Sam run up on the Academia Bridge and take my picture from our window, so I would always remember how close I had stayed to the bridge and to the Grand Canal. Hotel Galleria held our bags, so we wandered unencumbered to San Marco. We explored the square, and watched the little robot men on top of the Torre dell’Orologio hit the clock’s bell when the hour struck ten. We headed over to the Bridge of Sighs and sighed at its unfortunate condition, covered as it was in advertising by the sponsors of its repairs. Then it was ... read more

Breakfast was served in our room at 9am, a simple fare of coffee, croissants, and jam. We ate it and our remaining fruit looking out our window to the Grand Canal. Then we set out to do what we had heard was the best thing to do - wander the streets of Venice. Our hotel had provided us with a perfect little pocket map to Venice, which we used to navigate for the next six days and which I wish I had as I write down these memories. We decided to start at the Customs House (the “Dogana di Mare”), where once upon a time every ship entering Venice had to check in. Now there is a statue of a little boy holding a frog, which is under guard by day and locked up at night. ... read more

As I said, not every moment can be peaceful, or every day perfect. The key is to roll with the punches and not let it bother you - something I assure you I am not well practiced at, although my husband is a master. We had been planning to head out of San Giminano before noon, hoping to hit Venice before 4pm. We slept as late as taking advantage of the delicious buffet breakfast would allow, then headed upstairs to eat heartily. We met a couple of fellow Canadians at the breakfast table and chatted a bit, then they rushed off to catch a specific train, planning to head to Rome. We lingered over breakfast, packed and then lingered until the last possible moment on our balcony, checking out at eleven on the dot. We tried ... read more

I’ll admit it. I was getting tired of travelling. I was still loving Italy, loving everything we were seeing and doing, but walking into the luxury hotel at San Giminano, enjoying their buffet breakfast, knowing that the town was so small we didn’t have to rush to anything - it made me realize I was kind of tired of roughing it, and kind of tired of sightseeing, and kind of tired of the pace travel requires no matter how slow you take it. That, and we had received the official word that our house had closed and everything went smoothly, and Sam’s mom was minding the shop. All of it kind of made me a little homesick. But we had more to see, and as tempted as I was to sit on our gorgeous balcony all ... read more

We awoke the next morning and enjoyed a fabulous breakfast at the B&B - egg, cheese, meats, buns, fruit, all delivered in the breakfast room by a charming Italian “mamma” who you could tell just loved her life and loved serving breakfast to her guests. We planned to spend the morning in Lucca, so we started walking around some more.. We played a game trying to find a street without a single bike on it - alas, we failed. There were bikes everywhere. We even saw the mail being delivered by bike! We explored the Duomo, saw the Tomb of Ilyria del Caretto, and visited the ruins under the church of San Giovanni. We spent an hour in the Museo della Cattedrale, where we saw a gorgeous golden cruicifix and several other unique items. We hit ... read more

We got a later start than expected. We ate breakfast on the terrace, finishing all of our supplies, and rested for a bit, then picked up final paninis at Il Forno for our lunch. All this leisure resulted in missing the last train I had carefully planned our potential routes around. though I had carefully planned the shortest route to Lucca, all of the plans fell apart and we ended up waiting half an hour at the Vernazza station, then another forty minutes at La Spezia, and then having to train all the way to Florence, only to turn around and get to Lucca, changing trains three times. It was a long journey, but not so bad after all. We got to our B&B in Lucca around three, dropped our stuff and headed out to explore. ... read more
