Quick blog to cover a LOT! Forgive the rambling and terrible writing... Haven't had time to discuss my stops over the past several days...it's been a whirlwind. Trekked from Jaipur to Udaipur, the "Venice of the East." Visited many temples and shops and had some great South Indian dosai. It's a bit difficult to get out of the winding lanes of the commercial area, but it was well worth finding a restaurant off the tourist track.. From Udaipur we started toward Jodhpur, but wth a few pit stops. If you are ever in this region, you MUST stop in Ranakpur to visit the Jain Temple. It is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. The detail of the marble carving is incredible and of the many many colums, no two are alike. Simply breathtaking. ... read more

“This is indeed India! The land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps...the one land that all (wo)men desire to see, and having once seen, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the globe combined.” - Mark Twain from More Tramps Aboard, 1897 A note on Tour Guides and Money in India: Just about all guides in India (legit or no) work on commissions and are in cahoots with the local 'factory shops' and cab drivers. After each monument, the guides drag you into a local factory shop that 'specializes' in a local craft. These excusions usually consist of a demonstration of some sort ... read more

It's difficult to imagine how the rest of our trip will compare after seeing the Taj Mahal. We had a few last stops on our way out of Agra, the Agra Fort (remember, the place where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his petulant son?). We got to have one last glimpse of the Taj before moving on to Jaipur... On our way to Jaipur, we stopped at Fatehpur Sikri (an ancient fortified ghost city which used to be the capital, built by Akbar in 1659, but later abandoned due to lack of water). We also saw Jama Masjid, a stunning mosque in Fatehpur Sikri. On our drive from Agra to Jaipur, our driver, Gurdeep, took a detour down a clandestine street to show us a popular place to 'consort' (shall we say?) with sex workers. Phred ... read more

Mark Twain divided the world into two parts: those who have seen the Taj Mahal and those who have not. After today, I have a true appreciation for this sentiment... Phred and I began our day at the Shanti Home, ready for our first adventures out of Delhi and on to the Utter Pradesh region of India; our destination, Agra, the home of what many have called, “the teardrop on the face of eternity,” the Taj Mahal. Our travels proved to be less than ideal, however, when our air-conditioner broke at a rest stop - not desirable in 100+ degree weather - this potential nusance, however, was averted after a short while by our driver, Gurdeep, who proceeded to fix the car with a folded up piece of paper...not terribly comforting, but it seems to have ... read more

Phred and I started our day (excluding the 3am reunion) with a delicious 'Indian breakfast" at Shanti Home. We had coffee, tea, mango juice, fresh fruit (mango, pineapple and papaya), poori and aloo sabji. It was out of this world. Phred and I wondered why we don't eat this for breakfast every morning. Forgive me as a I cheat on this blog entry by lifting the destination descriptions from an Indian tourism website! I only have a few minutes before my massage and delicious tandoori dinner!! I have to say, the Shanti Home really knows how to treat it's guests!! I recommend it to anyone traveling to Delhi! You should talk to Sanjana or Pooja (she's wonderful, in fact, we're Facebook friends now). After breakfast, we proceeded with our driver to Qutab Minar. The tallest brick ... read more
