Did you not read Bryson?
The 1950s thing - Bill Bryson picked that off - not decor, but the entire place. (In a Sunburnt Country was the book title, I believe). I showed it to my Aussie friend, a Melbourne boy but with relatives who own sheep stations and he just laughed.

sorry but not too...
Sorry about dashed hopes for the Cup but good to know you've got your stuff. Woolworth's! Apparently, not only animal species are unique to the island...guess it's a reminder of the continent's remoteness. Hot weather got us to the beach twice this weekend, including a rare hooky-playing afternoon on Don's part Friday. Until next time...

no Kangaroo photo?
Live ones, please. Kangaroos "splattered" across the center of the road? Really? Aren't they big? Was there blood? Is that too gruesome to ask? I don't want to think about dead Kangaroos. :( Glad you got your bag back. Woolworth's? I loved that store. And a 50's vibe to Australia? If it means a simpler style of living, it has my vote.

This staggeringly epic entry definitely evoked memories of the mischievous Mr Allen, etched in the childhood furrows of my conciousness. Thank you. Really enjoyed it, but I'm sorry about your bag and I hope it arrives by way of a friendly kangaroo, or other Australian. Have a superb time and come on England!

I told you it pays to be late for a flight to Australia! Football is picking up too!

Perhaps your luggage was lost in the deep, dark crevasse of the 20-something Aussie's bursting breasts. Oh, and welcome to Australia! xoxo

Well, well....
Shall I scold you now or at some future point? Why would you, seasoned world traveler that you are, put your MEDS in your checked luggage? Tsk, tsk. Oh wait....don't tell me....you couldn't fit the meds AND your reading material, so the meds lost. (and yes, pun intended ;) Jeeze. Of course I hope they find your bag and that your jazzy underwear is found, safe and sound....and the thyroid meds too. And why are you hating the new laptop? Poor connections in Oz? Or the machine itself? Sigh. And we were being so hopeful when the purchase was made, weren't we? I think you'll have a brand new perspective when the luggage is found, the meds taken and you are rested fully. At least I hope so! So, how's the weather there? It's hot as blazes here - again. Today was great - very warm but not too humid. And now, at 11:30 pm it's hot and humid as hades. Lovely weather for sleeping for the girl who does not do air conditioning. Hmm, what's new here? Well, Gia went to day one of her 3-day vocal summit at Berklee. I was there for registration, bright and early this morning....quite an interesting and diverse bunch of kids. Gia is taking the jazz concentration and it's a small group - less than 10, which is nice. She is quite amazed that almost no one is from our area.....kids have come from the west coast, the middle of the country and even as far as Argentina. For a 3-day course! And she reports that everyone thinks Boston is "so clean!". Oh really? I am utterly depressed at the thought of my vacation coming to a close this weekend. :( It's been quite enjoyable, though I've not done anything earth shattering. Today I did the FUN job of scraping, sanding and applying primer to my front stairs. Whoo hoo. Sunday I might put the finish coats on. Oh joy. I detest house painting, as you know.....and I've got the entire house to do - by myself! Oh and did I mention that I am terrified of ladders? This will be interesting. Can one scream in terror and paint at the same time, I wonder? Well, I will sign off now. I'm glad you arrived safely, despite the bumps in the road (and air) along the way. Sending our love to Antony as well. Go explore and let us know what you think of the great land of Oz! Sending good luggage-finding karma your way too :) xo, Suze (and Gia, who is sleeping and has another full day at Berklee tomorrow - hopefully she'll find a minute to add some commentary here soon )

Thanks for the message. It's great to hear from you. I thank you for your kind words as this aspect of the summer draws to a close for me. Already, the first hint of dawn from the new school year was starting to creep into the sky for me. It's going to be seem a mere heartbeat, and we'll all be back together again. I hope you've had some time for relaxation during what no doubt has been a hectic summer for you. All the best, mike

Greetings from the Brooks!
Dear Mike, Eric, Kristin, Christina, and 'fellow travelers'-- Following all of your trips has been fascinating and educational. I truly feel as if I've learned so much about the world that I would never uncover on my own. Not only are your individual exploits interesting, but your connections, both through meeting up and through discussions of shared experiences, add an incredible depth to the experience. You can't imagine how exciting it is for me that four teachers from my school are out there experiencing the world in ways that most of us will never be brave enough to try. When we say that we like to have teachers who bring different experience and backgrounds to a school, we don't realize what the potential really is. What you're doing this summer adds such an amazing dimension to our community!

Kristin
So is it true? 3rd grade? What about the others? Any other gossip? Anyway, I can't believe you would make fun of me when I was the one you secretly were plotting with to overthrow President Paci. Oops. Did I write that out loud? mike

Lucille
Thanks for being there throughout Lucille. Heard any good gossip about next year? What about your job? I guess we'll all find out soon enough! mike

Eric
Cheers mate. It's been fun. I really can see me coming back to Brazil. You know the Fantastic 4? . Who is Mr Fantastic, Invisible Girl, The Human Torch and The Thing in your little group I wonder? See you in Medford! You're gonna be buying... mike

hey
glad that it all worked out. I completely understand what you mean about longer stays in places. it is amazing how in random parts of the world you can still find so much in common with people who live a completely different life. I am in Thailand with kristin, christina, courtney, and mekala. What a foursom! I'll give you all the details on that one later. It has been fun though, have a great time at the wedding and wish your brothers well for me. thought of you often and glad you made it through skin still attached, even if your wallet is a bit lighter for it.

Last Post
Hi, Well enjoy your remaining days. I have thoroughly enjoyed following along with you on this journey. Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear that you have made some more real friends and some that you would really like to keep in contact with and return to visit in the future. This also enhances the journey. Safe travels home. Lucille

Raining again
Nothing really worthwhile to write. I'm just enjoying all your pictures with other people in them since you lost your camera. Eric reinacted your security precautions of bug checking before bed time. Don't feel bad. We made fun of Karen loads longer than you. See you soon.

Non summary
I think the non-summary is perfect. Your entire trip has been a nicely balanced flow...in and out of places and, as you said, in and out of the lives of the people you've met along the way. I've viewed the blog entries not as summaries of each segment, but as highlights - the stories that were foremost in your mind at that moment in time. It will be interesting for you to discover which stories stay as prominent as they are right now.....and which others will emerge from the depths of your memory later on, down the road. It's been a lovely read and we thank you for taking the time to share it all with us, so thoughtfully and eloquently. We've been 'with' you in spirit, all along the way and look forward to seeing you soon. Enjoy your last couple of days! xo, Suze and Gia
