Well, the tallest mountain in the UK is deserving of it's title. Having not climbed Snowdon or 'The Pike' as the pros call it, I had no idea what to expect from Ben Nevis. Always wanting a challenge and seeing it as valuable training for peaks 'to be climbed' in the near future we planned out trip with a three day window to allow for bad weather. We booked into the dorm rooms of the local Glen Nevis youth hostel which is placed very close to the start of the 'tourist trail'. The proximity to the path is pretty much all that can be said for the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel, in all other respects it is a bog standard youth hostel and having not stayed in one for some years, it was an interesting reminder.... ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bikaner January 30th 2009

We'd loved western Rajasthan, especially Jaisalmer but it was time to leave the desert behind us we began to travel back east towards Bikaner in the north of Rajasthan. We had a good deal of distance to cover but it was a pleasant drive. Papi had made each car (there were two) a CD to play on the way which was eclectic to say the least but very enjoyable. We stopped on route a couple of times along the road at small shops selling everything you could think of hanging in long lines from the ceilings. Loads of people were gathered around drinking chai, sitting on what looked like beds without any mattresses! The chai from these places was great, sweet and spicy and refreshing. It amazed us that it was served in small pottery cones ... read more

We woke up very excited today as we off for our camel safari to the desert today! Papi gave us the morning to get some stuff together and we arranged to meet at Trio's for lunch from where we would set off. We split off and went to forage for biscuits/cokes/chocolate etc. Lucy and I managed to find a guy with a small street side stall we had seen the other 2 days who kept Mars bars (yes actual proper ones!) out of the sun in a special little cabinet, as if they were a priceless artifact. Having said this his charges were fairly reasonable (given the look of desperation I was probably hiding badly)! After a last wander round Jaisalmer we arrived at Trio's where I ordered the stinkiest garlicky tarka dall I have ever ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaisalmer January 24th 2009

After a very early start and a freezing cold shower we packed ourselves and our now rather well travelled rucksacks into autorickshaws and wound our way down the narrow streets of Jodhpur to the train station for our next train journey to Jaisalmer. The platform was deserted aside from the chai sellers and a man selling food from his wagon. We bought some breakfast and waited for the train. It seemed whenever we got on a train at any point in India things were always calm until the train arrived and then this mad frenzied rush occured to get on, find out where the hell we were meant to be and which beds or seats were ours. After all the effort, you would nearly always find someone asleep in your spot or a family who looked ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur January 23rd 2009

जोधपुर or Jodhpur is our next stop, one of the largest desert cities in Western Rajasthan. It is also known as the Blue City due to many of the buildings being painted blue. There are several theories behind why this is the case, to repel mosquitos, to reflect the sky, but the correct one according to Papi is that the blue colour signified the house of a Brahmin, the highest caste of Hindu, then others decided to paint theirs blue too. Fair enough, looks good to me! We had a great day sightseeing first at Jaswant Thada a glowing pure-white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh which sits high on a hill overlooking the town. We wandered round the gardens in the early morning cool looking across to the Meherangarh Fort which stands above Jodhpur. Visible ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranakpur January 21st 2009

Our 'pit-stop' at one of the Jain temples at Ranakpur turned out to be one of the most awe-inspiring places we visited and our free meal there was actually the best food we had the whole trip in my humble opinion! First of all we had an amazingly great day weatherwise with brilliant bright blue skies and sun so hot it sent us running for the shade. Chaumukha Mandir (Four-Faced temple) is the biggest and the most important Jain temple in India. The Jain religion is very interesting in that they believe in a very pure form of non-violence such that many cut of all hair, including plucking all hair including eyelashes as it is thought that the micro-organisms in them may get damaged or killed when hair is brushed/washed or rubbed! This also obviously affected ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Udaipur January 18th 2009

Udaipur is a rather classy area of Southern Rajasthan, it has to be said. We therefore arrived in suitable fashion, in a private car, oooh! The Lake Palace which floats on Pichola Lake here featured in classic James Bond film 'Octopussy' and I can see why, it is breathtakingly stunning location-wise. It has a sort of film magic about it looking like it's floating in it's own little world in the centre of this serene lake, far from the hectic streets (well not so hectic on Indian standards!). As we arrived all this stuff which looked like confetti started to fall over the cars, i'm not sure if it was ash or blossom or what but it made a lovely entrance to Udaipur. As we drove up a very steep hill (in first gear I think) ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar January 15th 2009

We arrived in Pushkar after a long but entertaining bus journey. We munched breakfast on board and watched more and more people pack onto bus. Everytime I thought it was absolutely full, another person appeared to fill the square few cm of free space. We stopped several times on route and wherever we did people lifted gorgeous smelling deep fried snacks up at the windows, very tempting!!! We arrived late afternoon and walked down a track to our hotel which was by far the nicest one we had stayed in, with a warm shoulder too! Papi had even brought a pepsi bottle full of rum for Rum n' coke! Brilliant! We showered then headed out into Pushkar. Pushkar has a very chilled out atmosphere and obviously caters for tourists, evident from the multiple establishments serving westernised ... read more

Exciting train journey at 3am to Jaipur from Delhi. Met up with Charlotte and Emily two other British travellers for the journey. Train station was an adventure in itself, blanket covered people, literally everywhere (having wisely arrived earlier than us!) so had to be very careful walking about. Rats were also enjoying a good scuttle about as we picked our way through to our platform. Had been told that the trains can be quite complicated and our ticket certainly didn't give many clues. Had some warm chai and bought a pack of biscuits to tide us over on the journey. The journey seemed to go in a flash, as i'd been looking forward to the experience. We were in sleeper class which means 6 beds (3 one above the other on one side, 3 on the ... read more
