The school had allocated a teacher to act as our support teacher and translator. His Chinese name translates to Champion and I had already spoken to him via phone from Australia. He is a Grade 3 English teacher, 33 years old, married with a young daughter. Champion collected us in Wuhan and after packing all all suitcases into the minibus we left the city late in the afternoon and began the two hour drive to Guangshui, north of Wuhan and close to the border of the neighbouring province of Henan. We were very surprised at the high standard of the highway but were told that it was the main highway to Beijing. The four lanes did not however have a lot of traffic on them. Champion said that there were still not a lot of privately ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai February 7th 2005

Jerry and I left Australia at midnight with heavy suitcases and a feeling of "have we done the right thing?" Arriving in Shanghai we were met at the airport by a an English speaking guide who drove us an hour to our hotel - the 'Yangtze' (can highly reccommend it). It was freezing cold and raining. The hotel was an original art deco hotel and was situated very close to the Shanghai museum and Nanjing Lu (St), which is a pedestrian shopping mall which stretches to The Bund, the famous waterfront concessional area which was Shanghai's Wall Street in the 1930's. We spent three nights wandering the streets around our hotel and dodging rain showers. On the eve of Chinese New Year all night you could hear fire crackers go off - it was totally crazy ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Southern Thailand » Songkhla June 13th 2001

2012 - These entries have been copied from emails I sent home in 2001. I can't help but laugh at them now - many years of travelling since have changed our values etc so much. I guess our experiences and expectations now have been shaped by these earlier travels. I'm also pleased to note that my photography skills have improved - very few photos were taken on this trip - maybe too many are taken today with digital cameras..... Jerry and I have been in Thailand now for four days and are enjoying it a lot but we are finding it much harder than Malaysia to find our way around. The main problem is language - nobody speaks any English and to make it harder all the signs are written in squiggly Thai symbols… All part ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Kuala Terengganu June 6th 2001

At the moment we are in Kota Bahru at the top of the eastern side of Malaysia. Tomorrow we cross the border into Thailand but at this stage am unsure as to whether we stay in the region for a few days or just keep heading north to Bangkok. We can’t get any information on the train timetables until we actually arrive in Thailand. We’ve booked a taxi to drive us the one hour north and drop us off at the border immigration office, where we then have to walk the kilometre between the two border posts and onward to the train station. We loved our time in Kuala Terengganu - the city had a strong Islamic influence and we seemed to be the only tourists there. We spent 2 days and nights there - we ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Kuantan June 2nd 2001

We’ve just enjoyed three days in Kuantan on the east coast and facing the South China Sea. The bus drive from Jerentut was pretty boring and the drivers had their 30 minute meal break after 2 hours of travel which always make the bus arrive half an hour later than scheduled. The buses are scary to travel in as the drivers do - at least to how way of thinking - the most dangerous things. That day they sat on the tail of trucks piled high with logs - the windscreen was nearly touching them and the driver kept trying to pass the trucks but the road was often too narrow or there was traffic coming towards them. Quite a few times they passed as we were approaching blind corners. It was made worse by the ... read more

I’m writing this in a little café in Jerentut in Central Malaysia, whilst waiting for a bus to take us to Kuantan on the east coast of the country. We arrived in Jerentut after five hours on the Jungle Railway from KL. We travelled 2nd class - it was clean, comfortable and a/c. The train was very busy as it is now school holidays here. Jerentut is a quiet little village, though we discovered the main part of the town (much bigger) when we climbed up the hill behind us. We are actually in the old part - the newer part is higher and set amongst trees so hard to see from here. We spent the night in a small hotel, paying only $16 for the room. After wandering around the village we located a laundry ... read more

Kuala Lumpar is crazy, crazy, crazy - sheer utter chaos!!! And we both love it! The entire city is bursting with life and people of all cultures. The bus trip from Melaka took 3 hours, one hour longer then we expected mainly due to traffic congestion in KL itself. We actually had to join a queue in the street leading to the bus station and then another queue just to enter the station. Once inside we felt like we had arrived in hell… The buses all park underground - it was a real test of driving skills just to position the bus into it’s parking spot. To leave the bus parking area you had to drag your suitcase along narrow pathways between the rows of stationary buses until you reached a narrow footpath leading you up ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India May 21st 2001

Singapore wasn't as busy as we were expecting., though rush hour was much busier. I think our main impression of the city so far is the intense humidity and temperature! We have never felt as hot though and I cannot say that I have ever been absolutely drenched in perspiration before. And it is only the first month of summer here.... We've been fascinated with all the tiny shops we've discovered whilst exploring the narrow alleys leading off the main streets. and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring them. I confess that we've found it hard to eat from the many food stalls on the streets - the locals live their lives behind those stalls - we've seen people cutting their toenails, spitting, changing babies nappies etc on the food preparation areas. Some of the stalls looked really ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud May 20th 2001

Our short break in Bali has come to an end and I feel quite sad about it. We both had a great ten days. I'm writing this in the lounge at Denpassar airport enroute to Singapore. We were sensible enough to prebook accommodation this time and shall be staying at Tai Hoe Hotel in Little India for the next 3 nights, I doubt we'll be staying any longer than that in Singapore as it will be quite expensive. From there we are heading to Malacca in Malaysia. Since I last emailed we've had a quiet few days. We thoroughly enjoyed our tasty meal of smoked duck (it was very tender and spicy) at one of the best restaurants in Ubud. Very classy restaurant and the meal cost us only $30. Next day we moved rooms within ... read more

I'm using Hotmail att he moment as there are no cheap international phone linese available to us my little pocket emailer. This afternoon I will try one of the international telephone offices to see whetehr I have more luck - most will probably be like the Post Office - with no stamps! Yestarday was very quiet but we spent thre afternoon going to Tanah Lot Temple towatch the sun go down. Very touristy but it was great to sit and watch the waves hit the little island that the temple was perched on. Last night we again ate at our favourite little haunt and spent the evening talking to a couple from Norway who have a son on AFS exchange in America. And listening to latin and jazz musicthey even had Buena Vista Social Club in ... read more
