Lots of photos with this blog - please check them out! Our next few days were spent in the second largest city in Guatemala - Quetzaltenango or Xela for short. Six hours and two shuttles after leaving San Pedro we arrived at our hotel which was in a lovely historical building close to the main square. The city suffered mass destruction in 1902 when dual disasters, a volcano and an earthquake, hit the city and almost destroyed. We were woken our first morning by an earth tremor - quite a large one we were later told - our first, and not an experience I wish to repeat. It was a disconcerting and weird feeling to feel the earth shake. Everybody thought we were mad to visit Xela but we loved it. It is at an elevation ... read more

The Highlands, and particularly Lago de Atitlan where we were going to spend the next few days - still values the traditional customs of the Mayan indigenous tribes. In fact the Mayan languages are more widely spoken then Spanish. Lago De Atitlan can be found in every advertisement of Guatemala - it’s a volcano ringed lake about 8 klms in length, the edges of which are dotted with tiny villages, some can be reached by road but some only by boat which is the main form of transport in the region. We arrived in San Pedro (one of the villages which has become a bit of a tourist mecca though less so then Panajachel on the opposite side of the lake) after dark - it had been an entertaining shuttle ride as one of the ‘gringo’ ... read more

It was a six hour mini bus trip from Antigua to Copan Ruinas in Honduras. We were all crammed into the bus pretty tightly. The first couple of hours were terrible - we drove through Guatemala City and the pollution from other cars and trucks was very heavy. We had been warned constantly by locals not to go to the capitol city due to violence and robbery issues - even the residents of Antigua hate visiting the place. Even after leaving the city boundaries the pollution didn’t decease as we were in the middle of a constant stream of trucks belching fumes. We were all pretty pleased to get to our half way point to stretch our legs. Thankfully the scenery improved from there - hilly rural country with lots of banana plantations and tiny dry ... read more

We arrived in Antigua, Guatemala, after leaving Ls Angeles at 2.30am. We were pretty shattered upon arrival so were very happy to catch the shuttle to Antigua, a very pretty UNESCO listed city 45 minutes from the airport. It was much cooler then we had expected - I don’t think we’ll actually wear any of the few summer clothes we packed! What a gorgeous little city this is…. Every street is cobbled and narrow and lined with low plaster covered brick houses painted in all shades of pinks and yellows. The city is dominated by three volcanoes, one of which is currently active, although we haven‘t noticed the lava glow from it. Though the streets are on a grid pattern we had difficulty finding our way around - maybe tiredness but there is a distinct lack ... read more

We arrived at the airport in Las Vegas for our flight to LA to find that it had been cancelled. After queuing for an hour we were told that we all had tickets on a flight at 11.10 that morning - except Mum who was booked on the 4.40pm flight! Whilst we were talking to the girl - much to Mum’s relief - a seat on the same flight as ours became available. Los Angeles is an enormous city! You can still say your in LA if your 80 klms from the centre of the city. Devin had booked us a hotel right on Venice Beach - it was close to the airport thankfully. Next day we were to experience LA Traffic and it was incredibly heavy. That evening leaving Mum and Jerry in their rooms ... read more

We were up early the morning after the wedding to go to the Grand Canyon. Probably not a good idea but unfortunately the only day in Las Vegas where we had 15 hours to spare! Everybody else had done the 4 hour helicopter ride, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but we were travelling on a budget! Also we had read that the helicopters cannot fly over the main part of the Grand Canyon. This area had been declared a ‘no fly zone’ due to noise pollution issues. Ten in the van, and breakfast at McDonalds before we drove to the massive wall behind the Hoover Dam. A road bridge above the wall had recently been opened and we walked across it to view the dam before crossing it in the van The bridge appears to be on ... read more

After our bumpy flight it was great to touch ground and head to our hotel - the Tropicana - which was at the end of the strip. It was after dark and the city was lit up brightly - Las Vegas in all its neon glory. We headed off down the strip to try to catch up with Mum and the rest of the family who were eating at a restaurant in Planet Hollywood. The strip is really long - about 12 klms - and we certainly weren’t planning on walking the length of it during our few days there. The family were just finishing their dinner and it was great to catch up with them. We all wandered across the road to watch the dancing fountains at the massive Bellagio Hotel - though all the ... read more

Yosemite National Park was stunning! Jerry, I, Devin and Jane caught a bus from San Francisco to Merced, four hours away. The highway passed through kilometres of low rounded green hills, each covered with rows of wind turbines. After the turbines we travelled for a couple of hours along a busy highway lined with mall towns - there seemed to be dozens of them, all seemed to consist of large low level shopping malls, fast food cafes, sale yards for RV vehicles and cheap housing. Merced was reached after dark and our lovely hotel room was a welcome sight. Up early next morning to catch the bus for the 3 hour drive into Yosemite National Park. Pretty countryside with a sprinkling of snow in a couple of places. The road to the park wound along the ... read more

With a feeling of anticipation we left Toowoomba on the late afternoon bus for Brisbane and a lovely Greek meal with Robyn and Sam. Great company as usual and the best way to start our trip. Next morning the early train took us to the airport and a rather uncomfortable 14 hour flight to San Francisco. The only highlights of the trip were Jerry leaving (twice!) a bag at the security check and me topping that by leaving my passport at the information counter at San Francisco airport….. After a lecture (well deserved) from the airport police upon it’s return we headed off, very tired and jet lagged, into San Francisco centre. The Hotel Vertigo and it’s hot shower were very welcome after the long flight. That afternoon we walked into the Union Square shopping and ... read more

Jerry and I are starting to get very excited as we pack our bags for another trip! We leave next week for the United States - a few days in San Francisco and then down to Las Vegas to attend our niece Petra's wedding. Not a part of the world we ever expected to travel to but we're really looking forward to it.... Probably because we'll be sharing the ten days with many other family members. Jerry and I shan't be returning to Australia afterwards though as we've decided to head further south and will be flying from LA to spend a fortnight in Guatemala, followeed by ten days in Costa Rica. From there we fly to Ecuador - we'll arrive Easter week just in time for the big Easter parades - and will then spend ... read more
