We took the kids to Grandfather Mountain to see the mile-high swinging bridge. I was a little nervous about this one, not liking heights. But I had to try it. Plus, doing a little reading online I found out the bridge isn't a mile off the ground-it's a mile above sea level. Also, it's called a swinging bridge because it's a suspension bridge, not because it's really swaying in the breeze. Our first stop was the bridge. Driving the narrow winding road to the top might have scared me more had I not driven to Pike's Peak. After that, nothing seems as bad! We took the kids hiking to Julian Price Park. After stopping at an Overlook and hiking a little path (which went to a small stream and was quite pretty), we went to the main parking area (follow signs to ampitheater). We had a picnic lunch packed in our backpack and I had our picnic quilt in a bag. We also brought the dog along on this hike. We decided to do the 2.3 mile moderately easy hike around Price Lake, a man-made lake in the park. From the parking area, we went to the right past the canoe rental. Although it was raining, we got in the van and drove to Grandfather Trout Farm in Banner Elk, NC. We had done some research, and it seemed like a good fishing spot for us. Only our oldest son had been fishing before; my husband doesn't like fishing; and it had been years since I had gone fishing with my dad. We had no equipment, but the Trout Farm supplied it all. With ponchos on, we walked to the entrance. They handed us a bucket, net, that metal thing to remove the hook (can you tell I don't fish?), a can of corn and tub of worms.
