I'm sooooo jealous It sounds like Canada was a BIG adventure. I thank-you for your blog as it reminds me how much I want to be out there seeing the world.
As for South America.... Mexico, Chitzen Itza and the Yucatan peninsular are all big tourist sites. I loved them, but don't know how well they'd be set up for back packers. Peru however is ideal. Loads of different options, lots of cheap travel and the occasional backpack thief. Mira Flores, Lima, Cuzco, Ica, Oliantaytambo, Machu Pichu, Nasca. Ask me if you're interested in any of the above. (not sure about spelling)
