South America June 5th 2010

Late April........ We were crossing the Bolivian, Peruvian border on a La Paz to Cusco bus. The bus took us by dry Lake Titicaca, and then along the mountains to the wet sacred valley and Cusco. So back we were for the 5th time in Cusco bus station, lovely Cusco bus station, with all the touts and taxis and general chaos. As we were used to the drill we walked out to the street to get a taxi for potentially what should´ve been 3 soles, but despite trying 4 or 5 taxis couldnt seem to get the price cheaper than double that. So we settled for a 6 sol taxi to our hostel, this time a different one, one of the chain hostels called Loki. The hostel was very big and not too personal, but it ... read more

Arriving in Bolivia, our first stop was Copacabana a small tourist town on the far side of Lake Titicaca, that apparently gave its name to the famous beach in Rio De Janiero. After getting off the bus we ended up wandering around for quite a while trying to work out where we could find a cheap place to stay. After a little time a local guy came up to us asking if we needed a room. We decided to follow him as he said it was only 10 Bolivanos each, about a pound! We got to a small dingy hotel with no one there, but the guy got us to wait and walked off looking for the owner. The owner arrived and told us the room was 15 not 10, we were about to take it ... read more

Colombia actually surprised me quite a lot, the country seemed much safer and more developed than its reputation leads you to beleive. In fact it was even a little expensive compared to what I had hoped it to be. And as for Bogota, a city which I remember watching travel documentaries not much more than 10 years ago, which portrayed it as one of the most dangerous places on the planet, well it seemed to me to be miles from that. It was set up in the andes next to a high mountain with a beautiful decent english summer style climate. I'm talking 25 degrees and sunny, not 15 degrees and endless rain!! The old town where I stayed was pretty with narrow cobled streets and a looming mountain to the side. The people seemed friendly ... read more

I've just spent most of the last 4 months in Toronto, in fact for more than 3 of those months I never even left Toronto's downtown. I was trying my best to save money and hibernate from the approaching winter. Like most largest cites in any country, Toronto has a bad reputation amongst most Canadians. Its known for being too big, and having bad traffic, and rude citizens, and although some of these factors can definately be counted as true, its not as bad as people make out. In fact my biggest problem with Toronto rather than Vancouver is that it had no real access to the outdoors, there are no big parks in the downtown, and the lake shore is mainly taken up with industrial and ugly buildings. On the plus side though, Toronto ... read more

Let me take you back to 2 months ago when I last posted this blog. So I was on a week long road trip with my folks from Vancouver, across to the Rockies. After 2 nights in BC we crossed the border into Alberta, and Banff National Park. The first stop was Lake Louise, Lake Louise is a small resort town set by a lake of the same name, with an amazing view of the Victoria glacier at the opposite end of the lake. Unfortunately when we got there it was raining, so we could only see mist across the Lake. Me and my dad, took a short hike along the lake and up to near the glacier in the pouring rain, whilst my mum waited in the car, reading. By the time we got back, ... read more

I spent nearly 6 months in Vancouver and it was a pretty good 6 months despite the weather and rundown hostel I had to live in because it was all I could afford. Vancouver is one of those places that regularly tops lists as the worlds most livable city, and after a while here you can see why. Its only two downsides being the high cost of living, and the weather. For much of both March and April it rained almost every day. But despite that it still attracts people from not only all over Canada, but all over the world too. The two main draws have to be the great outdoors which surrounds the city to such an extent you can always feel your right in the middle of it, plus the diverse number ... read more

Rewind back to early december and I flew down to the South Island of New Zealand for a week. The south island is very different from the north island, being almost completely encompassed with huge snow covered mountains. A week, wasnt really enough time to explore, but I'd specifically booked only a week because of my need to get myself to Canada before the end of january 2009, which was fast approaching. From Auckland I flew and hour and a half south to Christchurch, the main city in the south. Because I'd only got a week I'd pretty much planned out where I was going and when, at least booking all my bus journeys. So I only had the afternoon, and night in Christchurch. It's supposed to be the most english of New Zealand's cities but ... read more

Oceania December 12th 2008

Its been a while since my last journal, well 4 months, but unlike my 5 months in Asia, its been a more sedate 4 months, I've been working most of the time, and lets face it, both Australia and New Zealand are hardly as exciting or different from home as Asia was. So going back about 4 months to late July, I was just leaving Bangkok, and SE Asia, from there, I flew to Singapore with a several hour stopover, before heading on to Sydney. I flew from Singapore to Sydney on one of those new Airbus double decker planes. It was huge, and equipped with the latest in entertainment systems, including 100s of movies available on demand and TV shows music and games. The flight was relatively smooth, but on our final decent, the plane ... read more

My first stop in Vietnam was Sapa, a small mountain town filled with tourists. Mainly there for the trekking and the local tribal minorities. The place was very pretty although over ran with tourists and almost continually shrouded in either mist or rain. It was pretty colourful and had loads of young tribal girls in traditional dress selling trinkets. The first couple of nights I hung out at a local bar and met a few people including an irish lad that was heading to Lijiang in China to visit his mate that ran the Stone the Crows pub that I'd spent so much time at, and an indian lad who writes for the times of India, the leading english language paper in India. On the second day I went on a two day trek to some ... read more

Asia June 5th 2008

After leaving Delhi on Singapore airways overnight. I landed in Singapore in the morning, and immediately was reminded of the country's orderly and cleanliness. Singapore airport has to be rated as one of the best in the world, for ease of use and prettyness among other things. Since I was there last in 2002, they have expanded it to 3 terminals and all the new parts are in the same style as before with loads of water features and amazing architechture. From the airport I got the MRT into the central area to go and find my hostel. Of course compared to India, Singapore is at the opposite end of the scale, everyone looked affluent and well off, all the infrastructure not only worked but looked pristene and new. The MRT is abit like the new ... read more
