Stave Churches of Western Norway Gotta say these stave churches pics are fascinating, Alexis. I encourage a blog on them as you suggest. In the meantime I have posted some of your fabulous pics in "Cathedrals, grand churches, mosques & places of worship" thread in the Photography Forum. Check 'em out.
Pakistan Wedding What an honour to be invited and be able to travel to attend. Must hold special memories for you...and you have the outfit to re-live them!
Romania is on our short list I was excited to read this blog as we hope to go to Romania soon. We saw a documentary on it a few months ago and we were surprised at all it has to offer. We will follow your travels closely.
Will the museum ever open We were in Egypt in 2017 and it was due to open in 2020. I'm sure it will be spectacular. The antiquities and history are positively endless. Thanks for taking us along.
Short Visit to Cairo... It seems that nothing has changed since my visit in 1983. I stopped over in Cairo for two days on the way from Bangkok to Germany anod had the same itinerary as you. The airport was terrible then. The worst problem was boarding the plane with no order...300 Germans boarding at once!
Moldova What a fabulous thing to do over Christmas. We were in Romania a few years ago and it piqued our interest in Moldova and surrounding countries, so it's interesting to read this blog. Your travel group seems like a nice bunch of people :)
Overnight train to Moldova I was thinking about you earlier this week and wondering when we would see another blog. I was certain you were exploring some place. I'm intrigued by this train trip and Moldova. Which company did you book with or did you do this independently? There are so many places to go it is difficult to find the time. Thanks for taking us along.
Group I went with my normal travel group, Trekkup. But our guide, Natalia, is independent out of Chisinau and I think she set up the train tickets for us. She was fantastic!
Snowstorm, Subway art and Arlanda Hi. I just had to read your blog as it is about my hometown. Sorry about the terrible weather. That's winter in Stockholm I am afraid. I hope you have the chance of coming back in Summer some other year. You will most likely get better weather if you. Can't promise anything though. Interesting that you knew about the decorated metro stations. I know about it but have not really given myself time to explore this part of Stockholm myself yet. I have been thinking about it but never found the time. Interesting how diffrent your and my view is of Arlanda airport. Did you go from Terminal 5? That's the one I mostly travel from and I find it smooth and efficient. It sounds from your story that you might have travelled from one of the other terminals. /Ake
Stockholm I love Stockholm and I thought the snowstorm was quite magical. My sister and her son had warned me about the airport - apparently since Sweden opened up post Covid, it is more of a hassle than it used to be. The first time I went through the year before, during Covid was a bit easier. This time, it was chaotic. Not nearly as bad as many airports I fly through, but noticeable.
Thanks for reading and catching up though!
I second your opinion about Arlanda Airport. Signage was not clear so I ended up being dropped off at the opposite end of the airport from my check in and gate. I had to walk (pulling two heavy suitcases which my wife insisted I take with me) 1.6 KM to get there. At least, when the agent saw that I was having difficulty walking any further, she arranged for handicap assistance for my transit in LHR and DEN. You had such an amazing time in Stockholm.
What an adventure!!! And with your family. I bet the kids had fun. I'm not sure I can take the cold. Our high tomorrow is at midnight tonight at -1 F and I plan to stay indoors as much as possible. Anyway, I recall taking the train from Stockholm to Kiruna and on to Narvik, Norway in Aug 1968 right after graduating from high school. Then I took the train, ferry, and bus down the length of Norway to Oslo...my Eurailpass days!
Copenhagen We've only been to Copenhagen once. We enjoyed our time and your blog created some memories. I suspect the reduction in working royals has really caused a stink but it makes sense to me.
Memories This post brings back memories of our Christmas spent in Europe in 2013. After flying into Munich and ‘doing’ the Christmas markets in several German cities we travelled on to Copenhagen. After a couple of very cold days exploring beautiful Copenhagen and all the fabulous winter markets we were all set to continue by train to Stockholm. Unfortunately some nasty weather caused the inter-city train to be cancelled … but only after we had crossed the Øresund Bridge on a local rail service … so we had an unscheduled night in a hotel in Malmö, Sweden. The adventures that we have when our travels don’t quite go according to plan!
Iskanderkul How lucky you seem to be to take a jaunt in Tajikistan on a whim or a dream. For Denise and I when we joined Travel Camel and the Binkleys for our roadtrip into the High Pamir, it was not easy getting there from Oz...but so so worth it. This pic captures the coloured palette of incredible views that is await you there. I have heard the Fan Mountains are sensational and your pic gives just a taste. Understandable that you could not doze as you'd miss so much of the spectacular. Love the roads cut into the sides of mountains in your pic. I'll post it in our 'Follow that road' thread in the Photography Forum. For those that venture there those roads lead to Heaven in my book! Hope you have further hikes there.
I was an engineer on a long term assignment, first in Dubai and then in Qatar. During this time, I took advantage of my nice paycheck and proximity to other places to start seeing the world. After three years, I decided to take a much earned break and traveled for a year. After working about two years in New York State, I am on my way back to Dubai.... full info
