This day began with a short drive to Pacific Grove for breakfast. We then drove to Monterey and went to the most incredible aquarium. Without a doubt the best aquarium I've ever been in and every one I've been in since has been incomparable. There was a huge amount of sea creatures including, starfish, seahorses, sharks, jellyfish, penguins, stingrays and loads loads more. The aquarium is so big they allow you to have your hand stamped so you can go out and come back later the same day. We took a lunch break and found ourselves once again in a Ghiradelli's chocolate shop, once again eating ice-cream sundaes. We then returned to look at the rest of the aquarium which was very well laid out and a must-see in Monterey. We then headed back to our hotel in Carmel after stopping at a ... read more

North America » United States » California » Santa Cruz August 30th 2010

We got up early, left San Francisco and drove down the highway towards Carmel. We stopped off at Santa Cruz on the way. The sun was shining and the weather was 'typical California'. We picked up some ice cream and spent a little time on the beach. There were some fairground rides there however strangely most of them were closed and the place was very scarce of people. There was a indoor mini-golf course which kept us entertained for a while. It was pirate themed and there was an impressive glow in the dark section. Santa Cruz seemed like a nice place and the Boardwalk is worth a visit. We then drove on towards Carmel.... read more

Day 3 was an early start as we set off to visit the Golden Gate park. Our first stop was the Japanese Tea garden. The gardens were quiet and were a relaxing start to the day. There were many ponds of carp, statues, trees and flowers. A really beautiful garden to visit. The next stop was the California academy of sciences. The museum had plenty to see and we spent a good three hours looking round. The most memorable exhibit for me has to be the albino alligator. There was a good aquarium section and the living roof was also interesting to see. After that we went for a walk through the park which was very scenic. We then made our way down to the seafront and ate a a nice restaurant that mainly served seafood. We then took ... read more

Day 2 in San Fran started once again by getting on a cable car to a little farmers market on Fisherman's wharf. A inexpensive way to eat breakfast and the food was high quality. There was a very good variety and there was something for everyone. I had fried potatoes, scrambled eggs and green beans which were very flavoursome. It was a typical market and many stalls sold homemade goods. We then walked up to the Cable Car museum. Inside the building were the wires and mechanisms which controlled the cable cars throughout the city. A small museum but it told the history of the cable cars and also of the city. Very interesting and a nice way to spend an hour or so. We then made our way back down to Fisherman's wharf and ate at ... read more

First things first, what an amazing city! One of those places that is on most peoples bucket list and it didn't disappoint. The cable cars are a must simply just for the experience unless of course you have travel sickness and/or are afraid of heights. Them hills are pretty damn steep. The flight is a long way from England so when we arrived at around 5pm California time we were pretty tired. We just took a look around the shops and there is a good selection of brands if you are looking to shop. The next day we woke up at about 3am. No worries though as we had to be up early to take the trip to Alcatraz anyway. We had a nice bumpy morning ... read more
