2020
I'll be starting my RTW trip in January 2020. Yes, it's a long time in the future. But, 7 1/3 years can go by very quickly! It's my 50th birthday present to myself. :) That'll give me plenty of time to plan, save, get fit, etc. Route planning is proving to be interesting, though. Particularly at the beginning. I'll be starting in India and SE Asia. Working it in with the seasons has been a bit of a challenge. Definitely want to go to Everest Base Camp. :)

Great blog! Not dangerous?
Loved the blog on Bogota! I've always heard that Bogota was about the most dangerous city in the world. But it looks like you had no problems there? I'm planning to go there, while doing my RTW trip. :)

Re:Stephen
Hi Stephen, Bogota might indeed not be the safest place in Colombia, got to be a bit careful in some areas of the city especially at night, but it was just fine. When will you start your RTW? If you do go to Bogota, dont miss the bike tour, that was one of the highlight of my time there :-) Best wishes with the RTW preparation,

Driving out the locals to attract tourists
I'm not sure why tourism authorities in certain places try to create such artificial environments for tourists. This only results in such visitors being distanced from the unique product (whether that be the people, attractions or ambience of a village, town or city) that tourism authorities are trying to promote in the first place. Lovely architecture photos by the way :-)

Re: Shane
Indeed, totally agree with you, by turning some major tourist sites into "attraction park" authorities impact negatively on what they are trying to promote... A pity but luckily enough so far only saw that once in Colombia (Cartagena) ... Thanks for your comment about the pics :-)

Street art is about expression, freedom and doing art for the love of art. Keep it up Berlin
13th September 2012

great insights!
Thanks for sharing this amazing city so many have read about but so few will visit. Such contrasts--the wonder of seeing ceramics touched by the hands of those living thousand of years ago, the sturdiness of architecture lasting so long, beautiful reconstructions and then the inappropriate attire of the tourists and the destruction of the American military. The best of travel seems made of paradox.

Thanks for your comment Tara, indeed, Babylon is a stunning site and hopefully peace will come to Iraq too and this site will be made accessible to more travelers. Keep up with the blogging too! Safe travel

Excellent adventures!
I love that you're so game (and energetic) to hike all day and dance all night. I especially liked your story of galloping the young horse--it sounds as if you can gallop all day. Quite fun! I was also really inspired by your last blog on the wonderful political graffiti. Buen viaje!
