Europe » Spain July 4th 2008

After a very average Iberian flight and still recovering from our hangovers from our huge night in Rio we finally arrived in Europe. We were definitely sad to say goodbye to South America and our carefree days - but did our best to embrace our week in Spain and all the new adventures ahead! Lara's Mum booked us into some nice hotels as her birthday present, and we stayed right on the main drag in Madrid. We spent the days exploring the city, visiting museums and we were lucky enough to see Spain win the soccer European Championships in Madrid with thousands of Spanish supporters. We took the Renfe Train to Barcelona topping 300km an hour and spent the next few days enjoying the lovely warm weather, strolling down La Rambla, and seeing all the amazing ... read more

South America June 27th 2008

Our last few weeks in South America were spent in Chile followed by 6 days in Rio de Janeiro. Chile We flew into Santiago and spent a few days checking out the sights beneath a layer of smog, as it is apparently the 3rd most polluted city anywhere in the world. However it was a great city and we enjoyed getting lost in the side streets, trying the food and seeing even more lovely Spanish Colonial buildings. From Santiago we headed to Valparaiso on the Pacific Coast, Chile's cultural capital and famous for the colourful houses that line the top of numerous cliffs. Its a pretty crazy town with street art, windy alleys, beautiful houses and wonderful seafood. We spent our time exploring the cliff tops and little alleyways, trying to avoid stepping in the dog ... read more

South America June 10th 2008

Brazil - Argentina - Paraguay Brazil Crossing over from Bolivia into Brazil the differences were apparent immediately starting with the taxi prices. A trip that would have cost US$1 in Bolivia all of a sudden was ten times that - and our wallets were not happy. But we went ahead with our plans to visit the Pantanal, a giant wetland in the south of Brazil which is famous for its wildlife, and we headed in for a three day trip. We stayed at a lodge on the banks of a river and as soon as we arrived we were told to get into our swimmers and we went inner-tubing down the river. We later saw plenty of caimans and caught many a pirana in the same part of the river we were swimming in, but at ... read more

South America » Bolivia May 10th 2008

Bolivia is a country of crazy extremes, from the world´s highest capital city to the spectacular salt flats of Salar de Uyuni and the lush jungles and savannah lands, there is a chance to see and do just about anything. We took this onboard when entering Bolivia and did a few things of questionable sanity in our quest to embrace Bolivia. We started our trip in La Paz after having taken a bus from Puno, Peru. And La Paz itself is a crazy, bustling city with hundreds of street hawkers, protestors and people everywhere you look. We got a hotel next to the Witches´Market, which is full of powders, potions and plenty of llama fetuses. The llama fetuses are buried under a new house for good luck. We spent quite a lot of time wandering around ... read more

South America » Peru April 12th 2008

We started our exploration of Peru in the capital Lima, a metropolis of almost 8 million people, and like much of Latin America has obvious and sharp contrasts between the rich and poor. We settled in Miraflores, a wealthy suburb full of restaurants, shopping malls with a view over the Pacific Ocean from the exclusive shopping and restaurant area Larcomar, and spent a few days seeing what Lima has to offer. We visited the Unesco World Heritage centre of Lima which houses the traditional Plaza de Armas, the Catedral de Lima and the Presidential Palace, all on a much grander scale than the Central Parks we had seen in Central America. We walked to the Plaza San Martin to see a large statue of San Martin. A smaller figurine included on the statue is Madre Patria ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito March 28th 2008

We arrived in Quito after a nightmare transfer through Miami. We had 3 hours between flights and the majority of that time was taken up clearing immigration, picking up our bags, clearing customs, rechecking our bags and then reclearing security. It was not the quick and fun trip through Miami that we were expecting! But we managed to arrive in Quito safely. We spent our first few days in Quito having a bit of a look around and trying to sort out our Galapagos trip (see for details) which took up a lot of our time. We did however manage to see the Old Town, which is the beautiful historic centre of Quito and got a great but scary view over Quito from the Basilica del Voto Nacional. In order to get to the top of ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos March 27th 2008

We knew prior to leaving Australia that we wanted to go to the Galapagos Islands. Al was even lugging around a copy of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species until it got to heavy and he couldn't deal with carrying it anymore! We also knew that it would be expensive, and that we would be blowing a few months budget in 8 days worth of sailing. What we didn't know was whether or not it would be worth it - whether we would see all the animals we had been promised, or whether it would be 'ruined' by all the tourism. But we can safely say Galapagos exceeded our extremely high expectations and if you are thinking about going - GO! After some serious confusion at the airport (we had arrived two and a half hours ... read more

Central America Caribbean March 10th 2008

As soon as we woke up in Managua we thought we should try and get a change of perspective on Nicaragua, so jumped on a bus for Granada, which is yet another Spanish colonial town. It is a lovely beautiful old town on the shores of Lago de Nicaragua (the largest lake in Central America). We spent a few days wondering around and looking at the sites, and once we had seen all the sites we decided we needed to have a little more fun since all Lara's mountain biking injuries had healed. So we did a canopy tour, which is basically a course of giant flying foxes through the tree tops. It was good fun, and a nice way to get the adrenaline pumping again. From Grenada we headed to the Pacific beach side town ... read more

Central America Caribbean February 18th 2008

Guatemala and El Salvador So we returned to Xela for the last time, to await our credit cards and of course get another 2 weeks of much needed Spanish tuition, as it seemed as though all the time spent travelling through English speaking places really took its toll! Arriving back in Xela was really good - it felt like returning to our home away from home. It was freezing, much colder than before Christmas, we had frost outside our window a few times which was a bit of a shock considering we were in the tropics! We returned to school to see barely any familiar faces which felt a little strange, but we settled in quickly both at school and at the same host family we had previously stayed with. Staying with the same family was ... read more

Guatemala - Honduras - Belize - Mexico - Guatemala School's out for the summer....or winter as it may well be, and we are thrilled! As much as we have enjoyed being in Xela and learning Spanish and a lot about Guatemalan culture, it was definitely time to stop learning, see some sights and have some fun! We headed to Antigua, Guatemala early on a Saturday morning after graduating from school the day before. Antigua is a smallish, very pretty Spanish Colonial town nestled in amongst the volcanoes and we spent time here looking at the beautiful churches, many of which are in ruins, and also climbing an active volcano, Volcan Pacaya. Pacaya is about 40 mins out of Antigua and an easy walk. We went on an evening hike meaning that we got to the lava ... read more
