North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum September 16th 2015

We arrived in Tulum on the eve of Mexican Independence Day, and spent the evening enjoying the traditional festivities (always held the night before) outside the town hall. There was music, a flag raising, a surprisingly interesting speech - given that it was in Spanish and then fireworks and confetti - more confetti than I have ever seen in my life! The Tulum ruins were beautiful, even compared to Chichen Itza, mostly due to its location on the cliffs by the ocean, and it was a lovely day ending on the beach. We ended the day back at our hostel before the night bus to Belize City (departing 00:45) ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Valladolid September 13th 2015

Our first stop after Cancun was Valladolid (nope, you don't say it how it looks), a super lovely town about 30 minutes from Chichen Itza. The hostel was a bit like Narnia - entering through the front which looked out over a plaza in town, but the it went back forever with outside bathrooms, hammocks and the kitchen and seating area! On the first morning we hired bikes and cycled 30km round the surrounding area, visiting 3 cenotes (sink holes or caves with water for swimming in). The first was full of bats, the second was underneath Tekom's main plaza and was crystal clear with just one beam of light from above, and the final one was fully open to the sky with lots of tiny fish that nibble your feet! The next day we visited ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Isla Mujeres September 11th 2015

Sam reckons the day we both arrived in Cancun isn't our first day. I'll concede because then it means we had the coolest first day ever (day 0 = not flying through a hurricane in Bermuda- good choice Mr Captain, taking actually forever to get to the hostel, meeting Kylie from NZ and going for tacos - yummy, and Sam arriving when I definitely wasn't asleep because I was staying awake until she arrived...) This little island just off the coast of Cancun is basically heaven. Definitely worth getting stuck inside the bus and having to climb out the boot and maybe, possibly getting a teeny tiny bit sunburnt. The sand is beautiful and white, the sea is turquoise; the sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky! Having met Linda on the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » West Sussex » Gatwick Airport September 10th 2015

Well, it started as a quiet musing to Sam, who was soon to begin the next leg of her world adventures, back in April. Soon, flights were booked, plans were made, and all of my belongings were boxed up and crammed back into my childhood bedroom at my parents' house (thanks, by the way. Again). April doesn't seem that long ago now, but September seemed a very long way away then... Crikey these things creep up on you don't they! Now it's D-Day. My brother Tim woke up at an unseemly hour to bring me all the way to Gatwick Airport (thanks, again), and soon I'll be boarding a plane, having checked in a bag carefully packed with optimal efficiency, to the maximum weight permitted on my flight booking. It's too late to have forgotten something. ... read more
