Waking up bright and early at 4.30am to get our taxi to the bus station went surprisingly well, and our broken Spanish got us to a bus going to San Salvador - not the one we had planned though, so our carefully calculated remaining money wasn't enough to pay for our tickets... luckily, they were totally happy to accept payment in a mix of Lempira and US dollars! The troublesome 4 extra dollars were worth it though, as we ended up in the cheap seats on a luxury bus (instead of our planned standard bus). The cheap seats still reclined to nearly horizontal, had WiFi and air conditioning. Money accidentally well spent!! Crossing to El Salvador was trouble free, although lining up with our bags just passed the border for a narcotics police check was pretty ... read more

Travelling to Western El Salvador from Lake Yojoa in one day would be pretty close to impossible, so we broke our journey with a night in Tegucigalpa. When we arrived our taxi from the bus station had to take a diversion around a fair (it's a three day holiday in Honduras at the moment) so we went there to get some food after we checked in. So far we haven't spent any time in capital cities, and I wasn't expecting much from our afternoon there, but our hostel for the night (apparently the only one in the city!?) runs free city tours so we had a pretty cool afternoon looking round the central area, including some churches, a local market, the national theatre and one of the museums :) Honduras, and all of central America, has ... read more

Tourism from outside Honduras to Lake Yojoa almost exclusively revolves around D&D Brewery (Hostel, Hotel and Tour company). It's super lovely with beers brewed on site, a fire pit to sit around in the evening and probably the friendliest tour guide in the world. When we arrived from Copan, via the biggest bus station I've ever seen in San Pedro Sula, the bus knew exactly where to drop us off - very handy! We spent the afternoon playing cornhole (a bean bag toss game) and trying a couple of the brews. The hostel is surrounded by trees and there are lots of hummingbird feeders - I was very entertained watching them fly around, but don't think I will ever manage to photo one! The next morning we went down the canal by rowing boat, looking at ... read more

I'd be lying if I said any travel agencies recommended our 'Get to Copan' in one day plan/request. All of them recommended an overnight in Antigua. But we've been there, and didn't want to waste a night. So off we trotted on the route sold as tourist van to Guatemala City, then double decker local bus to the border - in Honduras by half 6. Apart from not. We had to change van at Antigua, no biggie, and arrived in GC at about the right time, and got on our big bus (not a double decker) at 14.45, figuring we were good. Wrongggg... It started to go a little wrong when our bus was literally at a standstill for 2.5 hours not long after GC. Lots of emergency vehicles went passed but no emergency was apparent ... read more

Lago Atitlan was a stunning location to arrive on my birthday, having had birthday cake and leftover pizza for breakfast on the bus ride over. We checked into our hostel, who insisted on giving me birthday tequila, and had a pretty relaxed afternoon in front of the lake. We also visited the local women's weaving cooperative- so many beautiful handmade materials, but unfortunately no space in our bags (well, none in mine, which is ridiculously heavy and full. Amateur first time backpacking mistake...!) The next day we went on a horse trek up to a coffee plantation and factory, and to a view point just outside San Pedro with stunning views across the lake. The coffee plantation and factory was super interesting - the factory is basically owned be a cooperative of local growers, and buys ... read more

Just two nights, one day in Antigua before heading to San Pedro La Laguna for a few days round Lago Atitlan. The shuttle to Antigua wasn't the longest bus ride (took about 8 hours), but definitely the least comfortable so far! We have spent the day getting laundry done (yay- clothes don't smell cavey anymore!) and wandering around the city. It's a very pretty colonial city, with lots of church ruins and churches that have been rebuilt, pastel coloured shops and houses and cobbled roads. The city used to be the capital, before it was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. It's surrounded by 3 volcanoes, including one active one, but the clouds meant that we couldn't really see anything!! Very excited to be at Lago Atitlan tomorrow for my birthday :)... read more

Arriving in Semuc Champey from Flores involved two buses and one ride in the back of a pick up truck. Standing on the back of the truck seemed pretty fun to start with, despite the crazy bumps in the road, but after half hour of gripping for dear life on the steepest roads (up and down) I have ever experienced, arriving at Utopia was literally like arriving in paradise. I can't rave about this hostel enough, set close to the river, about 8km from Lanquin, the nearest village, and 3km from the Semuc Champey Park. The hostel is basically a massive wooden hut, with beautiful views, everything made from local wood, delicious meals and the most chilled out atmosphere ever. Each morning I woke up to stunning views slowly revealing from the clouds just outside, no ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala » Petén Region » Tikal September 23rd 2015

Crossing the border into Guatemala was as uneventful as can be, although getting off a bus in the middle of nowhere to catch a different one in "ten minutes" to take us on the final leg to Tikal was slightly unnerving. On catching the next bus, our language limitations became apparent - emergency crash course in Spanish ASAP necessary, and we ran out of local currency when trying to enter Tikal Park.... Luckily lots of people appear to make this mistake, as there was a money changer opposite the entrance (exchange rate surprisingly good considering!) and our driver had just about enough patience to wait until we had got our tickets!! Arriving at Jaguar Inn about 3pm, the park was all very quiet - a bonus to travelling during the low season - and they let ... read more

Two nights on Caye Caulker was more than enough, especially with the heat during the day being crazy, so we headed to San Ignacio, in the western border of Belize. Catching the chicken bus was an experience, but the journey only took 3 hours and arrived to a much cooler temperature (turns out the weather has just taken a turn everywhere, but we definitely took a shine to the place on this account). The hostel in San Ignacio - Bella's Backpackers - was really lovely, and we spent our first full day with the owner and her daughter on their farm just outside the town, and at the falls in Cristo Rey - called Monkey Tree Falls. We spent the evening back in town, on the eve of Belize's Independence, which culminated in a half hour ... read more

After making it across the border and into Belize City, we caught the water taxi to Caye Caulker and had a very lazy day.... Watermelon nice at the Lazy Lizard, a short walk around and a nap (apparently I really can't sleep on public transport!) Dinner was AMAZING - freshly caught and grilled lobster, three sides, three rum punches and dessert for 25BZ - about £8! The next day we had a full day snorkelling tour with Caveman - we saw a manatee, turtles, stingrays... Swam a shipwreck and the Hol Chan marine reserve (did you know that Central America has the second largest coral reef in the world??) and finally saw a seahorse in the mangroves! The only downside was dealing with sunburn afterwards (its fine now!) ... read more
