We are staying in a suburb of Den Haag called Leidschendam, but Amsterdam is a quick 40 minutes away. Kathi and her girls were flying into Amsterdam's Schipol airport and we happily agreed to meet them for the afternoon. They would come back to Den Hague with us, stay a few days, and train back out to Copenhagen. This meant TWO different days in Amsterdam! We find the Pulitzer hotel and wait - true Kathi style - for her to find us, pack up her room, leave bags with the concierge, etc, and off we go to explore - with a 15 and 12 year old in tow. Kathi needs coffee to stay awake and is convinced all those coffee houses are kind of packed into one area, and we are not in that area. So ... read more

July 17 and we drive to Den Hague - better known in the west as The Hague. After a nightmare of trying to park and finding out - too late, that the chip card we have is not the same as the one everyone else in the Netherlands has - it doesn't seem to work in simple machines like a parking meter. So, off to a parking house to pay vast amounts of money to park in the city. We walked around a very nice district where we ran into various embassy houses and finally the Queens palace. All the flags are flying half mast to honor the many many Dutch who were killed in the Malaysia flight that was shot down. People here are sad, angry, and demanding something be done - a shrine has ... read more

What kind of sign is it when my bag weighs 49 pounds before we ever leave San Diego? I'm sure I'll use 25 pounds of hair products before I leave - right? Other than the impending doom of too much weight for the way home, the flight to Atlanta and then Amsterdam go without a hitch. The train to Delft was clean and on time and the country side was green and pastoral. Everything in sight is well kept and clean, cows, sheep and goats are grazing everywhere, and boats float on the zillions of canals. We pass lot after parking lot filled with bikes - I can't wait to get on one myself! Or eat all that delicious cow, sheep, and goat cheese. Once we are in Delft, we find the Hotel Leeuwensbrug to be ... read more

Jane knew a lovely French bakery that she needed to share with us - I guess I need French food at all times - even in Israel! After a calorie laden breakfast of croissants, apple tunovers, brioche and chocolate rugalah, we set off on the walking trail to burn off a few calories. The trail is flat and is the old railroad tracks and closed to pedestrians. We walked to the windmill and to a very chi-chi row of art galleries. We were introduced to Gidan - a playful character who proceeded to show us pretty much every dreidel he had made in the last 30 years. Very expensive, but he let us spin and chat for over an hour. He also gave Jane a beautiful turquoise dreidel in honor of her becomming an Israeli citizen. ... read more

New York was windy, and after a bouncy landing, we found Dianne's friend, Julie, and our ride with Percy began. Percy is some sort of UN Ambassador At Large Extraordinary Plenipotentiary (I don't make this stuff up)and his driver whisked us into the city to meet Dianne's other friend, Toby. Toby was waiting with cosmos in hand - I could have kissed him, I was so excited! We walked a few locks in the oh-so-gorgeous city to eat Italian, then back to the airport... El Al airlines believes in safety and security- and that takes time. We were all questioned separately before being allowed to stand in the check in line. For what ever reason (maybe I do fit the profile!) I got more questions than the others, but finally I joined Hagit and Dianne. next ... read more

Even though I'm now back at home, I still felt the need to finish what I'd started in Paris. How could I not tell about the lapins? We found the best market in Paris...and it was right around the corner from our flat. Sunday and Thursday, the Bastille market is my new favorite market in all of the city. Mounds of fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese, meats, chickens, bread, scarves, hats, trinkets, and crepes stretched out for nearly 3 blocks. Everything delicious and fresh and colorful. My gory favorites though were the fish heads on ice and the poor lapins (rabbits) waiting to be stew. Our old lady yellow cart was filled to the brim with dinner and snacks for the next few days. We met Greg at Angelina's for one final decadent breakfast of croissants, fruit ... read more

The boys are gone...or so we think. Imagine my surprise when I'm in the middle of a shower and Lee pokes his head in to tell me we have company! Seems Ry and Will had taken the train from Seville to Paris to change to Berlin. The next train didn't leave for a while, so they popped in for a quick shower and to clean out the fridge. Then they went back to the the station only to find out there were no trains for the next 2 days for Berlin. So, we have the guys for a little longer. It's good. We invited them to Pere LaChaise cemetary, but the night/party train seemed to have wiped them out, so we left them prone on sofas and off we went. You might have been to cemeteries ... read more

We though we might go to Amsterdam for a few days via the train. I've never been before and the train sounded like fun - its only a few hours away, we'll ride the rails and see the countryside. It was a great idea until we looked into the cost. $700 round trip! That can't be right- we tried another website - $700 round trip (and it was the same train...Thalys seems to have the monopoly on trains). after an hour of shaking our heads and trying every which way to deal, including a personal trip down to Gare Lyon and Gare Nord (2 big train stations), we admitted defeat and gave up. If we had planned our spontaneity 30 to 60 days in advance, it would have cost us about $200. So much for the impromptu ... read more

It was Wednesday and we remembered a wonderful little market in our old neighborhood of Motte Piquette Grenelle, so we metro'd over and had a nice time reminiscing and buying various items. Then we took a walk over to the Champs de Mars and the Eiffel Tower to check out the scene for the upcoming Bastille celebrations and found a gigantic mirror ball on a crane ready to be hoisted up somewhere on the Eiffel tower. The theme for this Quartorze de Juliette is 70's and 80's disco music, so the ball did make sense. Lots of people and police were milling about the plaza so we watched for a while and turned toward Ecole Militaire and out of the park by way of a ancient carousel. I remember this carousel because I brought my nieces ... read more

The most enormous chicken sized pigeon has taken up residence on a branch outside our front window. We can hear him cooing and it's loud. We nicknamed him "the pigeon king" and he is now our protector. The day, we (not including the pigeon king) took the metro to the left bank to see the Sorbonne neighborhood. The area is home to the university, many bookstores and cages, and tons of galleries and coffee houses. as we walked, we found a fenced off area where they are excavating the remains of ancient Gallo Roman baths from around 200 CE. Those baths are near the Museum of Middle Age, and I don't mean us... We wandered in the gardens for a while, watched kids play in the shadows of medieval walls, and listened to birds sing. After ... read more
