Asia » Hong Kong July 7th 2005

Hong Kong can be a very confusing city. Well at least for us. On our first day of exploration we could not find anything we set out to find without a lot of work. Our first plan of action was to visit the museums on the bank of Victoria Harbor near the Walk of Stars. Some how we ended up getting out on the farthest MRT station from the water that their was. See MRT stops here branch off in many directions creating a vast network of underground tunnels. So during our walk we stumbled upon Kowloon park which was quite interesting. They had a public pool, some exotic birds, and nice water features. Anyway back to our mission. We then stumble around some other street for about another 45 minutes until we see the walk ... read more

Sorry everybody for not updating our journal lately. And I feel even worse about skipping at least a week but maybe more to tell you about Hong Kong. I have updated some more Thailand, Singapore, and Bali pictures, so be sure to check those out. Well we have not been in Hong Kong very long, we just arrived last night, but so far the city seems amazing. Right now it is 8:00 am and Zara is still asleep so I have a free minute to fill everybody in. There are so many lights and people here, and everybody seems important. When you walk down the street and look up all you can see are super tall buildings all around. I cannot wait to explore today. Till Next Time ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali July 2nd 2005

Day One After having been disappointed by Sanur's lack of cultural attractions, we ventured on to Benoa. With this tiny village, we actually discovered a cultural center within Bali's highly touristed Southern sector. When we arrived, we were immediately surprised to find a man who wanted to show us hotels in our price range. Naturally, after having met so many sales people in Bali, we assumed that he worked for one of those hotels. But he actually showed us three different ones and explained that he knew all the owners, but didn't work for any of them. We knew from our guide book that he had shown us all of the budget hotels in town and we were beginning to think that he had done so simply to be nice. We had experienced such people in ... read more

Hello Everyone, It's so nice to update our journal again. We have seen so much lately and I'm already starting to forget the details. This journal entry specifically concerns the village of Toya Bunkah. The village itself is not a place I wanted to stay in for too long, but it is also the starting off point for a sunrise trek up the Batur Volcano. The restaurant and hotel employees in this town are very nice, but the sales people are a bit aggressive. Sometimes they would even approach us in the middle of a meal to sell us their goods. We were also concerned about paying too much for the trek to the top of the volcano, because every other tourist we asked, paid a different amount. I think we came out in the middle ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud June 21st 2005

Hello all, sorry for the late updates, we seem to be updating our journals about a week after we visit a place. It is actually bothering us, since we seem to forget things as time passes. But we will do our best to record things as we remember them. Ubud Day 1 Ubud is an amazing place; the environment is unlike anything we have ever seen. We stayed in a hotel near the Sacred Monkey Forest on the slow side of the street. Our hotel was wonderful, very tranquil and relaxing. We were in the back of the complex near a small river on the top of a hill. Our room was without air conditioning but it was not needed since Ubud is much cooler than the costal area. The hotel was set in a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta June 19th 2005

This journal will cover the night of June 17-19. Ah Bali, Paradise as they say. Well our first experience in Bali was getting off the plane onto the runway, not a large tube directly connected to the airport, but onto the runway. Then we were transported from there in a bus to the airport. This is a very small airport, but I believe it was created just to accomodate the flood of tourists into Bali. I also lost my cell phone in this airport because they did not have plastic bins to place your valuables in as they are x-rayed, so I placed my black cell phone on the black conevor belt and never saw it again. Another interesting note: one of the night clubs in Kuta beach was bombed in 2002, with this in mind ... read more

Asia » Singapore June 17th 2005

Hello Everyone, First off I'd like to apologize to all our avid readers for slacking off on our entries so much. We shall try to do better in the future. So I'm going to start by catching up on our Singapore experiences. On the 15th of June (wow, time flies), we had a very busy day. We started by visiting the famous Singapore Zoo. I can see why it's famous. Instead of cages or fences, it has moats filled with water or other obstructive materials, so you have a close-up view of the animals. There were even some animals that didn't have much of anything between them and the visitors. Monkeys, elephants, and bats were perfectly within reaching distance. We also learned a lot about tigers and the rapid destruction they face. For example, white tigers ... read more

Asia » Singapore June 14th 2005

Hello Everyone, My first impression of Singapore, as we sped away from the airport on the highly clean and efficient MRT system, was that it looks a little like Tomorrow Land at Walt Disney World. The streets are incredibly clean, the pedestrian zones are spacious, and the buildings are like something from the future. The only spot that is not spotless seems to be our hotel room. Although the price is right, it smells like a bug bomb exploded, probably to cover up the smell of our sheets, that look like they are in dire need on replacement. We did not arrive in Singapore until 6PM, so that didn't leave us much time to look around. We ventured out anyway and had dinner in one of the small sort of street restaurants that can be found ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Lopburi June 10th 2005

So far our travels have been amazing, we have eaten a lot of great food, met some interesting peple, and seen some increadable sites. But our traveling has not been without rocks in the road. We left on this journey with the hope to learn more about the culture in which we are traveling in. Well we have learned a lot but at the same time it is difficult to understand Thai culture, or any culture for that matter, without knowing the language. As it is, we can only observe, and guess why things happen the way they do rather than receive feedback from the locals. Even if we could speak the language we would still be ignorant of some aspects of Thai life because we are not Thai. Since we wish to travel the world ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya June 7th 2005

Now we are traveling in the province of Ayuthaya which is about an hour and a half from Bangkok. That is a short trip unless you leave at 11:00 am from the islands and take a three hour boat ride then a 12 hour train ride plus another hour and a half train ride just to get there. On our first day we stumbled upon a weekend market. It was small but had a lot of neat stuff. The food was especially strange, we tried a green drink with some sort of jelly worm in it. It tasted like coconut milk, but with sugar added to it. I did not really like it, too sweet for me, but it seemed very popluar with the locals. We are staying in a quiet part of town where we ... read more
