Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik July 30th 2014

It was a typical first day of the trip today. After 24 hours and traveling through Washington DC and Vienna, Austria we arrived to a torrential downpour in Dubrovnik. This was the first time I had ever seen rain in 7 trips to this city! Fortunately we had a restaurant near our apartment during the storm. After it stopped raining, we had a nice, cool walk through the Old Town. Everyone is doing well. Dad actually traveled well without much sleep. He is still raring to go while the rest of us have run out of gas! Enjoy the pics from the day! More tomorrow.... read more

Europe » Croatia » Central Croatia » Zagreb July 31st 2013

Here is the last of it. On our last day, we went to Domagoj's Pride Shop, went to Croatia's biggest mall, ate supper at Bobans and hung out with the family for a bit near Jelacic Square. The one out of the ordinary incident was the fact that Abbey and Ayden met Dražen Ladić. He was likely Croatia's best goalkeeper. There is no bigger sport in Croatia, so it was nice to meet someone of such importance. All in all, it was a very good trip! Thanks for following the blog!!!... read more

Europe » Croatia » Central Croatia » Zagreb July 30th 2013

We made it to Zagreb today! Not before having to make the traditional stop at the Karlovac McDonald's though. Got to the hotel Dubrovnik at about 3. while dad rested, the rest of the crew went out to shop a bit. After that, we meet Domagoj, Lea, Ivana and Franjo for supper at the restaurant at our hotel. The food was Excellent. After eating we had to head out to Makšimir for the Dinamo Zagreb game. They were playing a team called Sheriff from Moldova in a Champions League qualifier. It was quite an experience. We had to pay 5 x the regular ticket price, found out only half of the stadium was available for seating due to penalties handed down on the club for racist violations, saw 10 times as many SWAT people than I ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Rovinj July 29th 2013

This was our night day in Rovinj. The day started with a nice breakfast at our villa. Had a nice visit with Lado Milli. He is a stone worker here isn't town and a very energetic guy. Dad and I were the last two down for breakfast. Lado asked us what our plan for the day was and my dad told him we were going to the beach. He and his wife them were giving my dad directions in Croatian and by the time we knew it, Lado was going to get us through a gate to a beach even though I had our destination picked out before hand. As we pulled up to the drop off spot, someone from the back of the van said "look at that guy, he is nude!" Yep! We were ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Rovinj July 28th 2013

We had a great breakfast early this morning as we prepared to leave Brinje. It was great to see Mira again and it is always sad when we leave her. She works incredibly hard to make us feel at home at her house. There is something special about her that connects to me as I think back to the trip I was a part of in 1987. Hopefully next time is not too long from now. We also had a great time with Domagoj, Lea and Luka. The kids are really growing and we can't wait to spend more time with them in Zagreb in a few days. Our first stop today was in Pula. I had always wanted to see the colosseum there and finally got my chance. It is in amazing shape considering it ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Central Croatia July 27th 2013

Today we spent our day in Selce. We went to the beach there since we could not find parking in Crikvenica. It was a good beach with a lot of people there. On our way home, Domagoj took us up over the top of the mountains through Krivi Put. It was the place of the most amazing views I have ever seen as I looked out over the Adriatic. Domagoj said it would have been even better if we were up there near sunset but we were a little early for that. When we returned it Brinje, we had a huge meal that consisted of mushroom soup, tomato-onion-cucumber salad, spaghetti bolognese and čevapčići. That was then followed by some ice cream. It was an unbelievable meal prepared by Mira. Off to the soccer field for a ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split July 26th 2013

We had a nice last night in Split. Dad was beat out though so we headed back to our apartment early. Tithe following morning, we left Podstrana and ate lunch in Šibenik. I always expect there to be more of a tribute or memorial to Dražen there. After lunch some of the group walked up into the old town for a while and dad and I waited for them in a nice, shaded, breezy walkway Inside the town's walls. From there, it was back to the auto cesta for the Ernest of the trip to Brinje. We got to Brinje and visited with Mira and Tomo for a while. After supper, we headed to Letinac to see Nevenka Perković. She seemed to be doing well. A couple of shots of rakija later, we were listening to ... read more

Spent another day at the beach. Hot today here. It was about 95 degrees. Dad hung out at the beach today for a couple of hours and then I brought him bacK to our apartments. The place we are staying is exceptionally nice. Our plan for later is to head to the riva and get something to eat. Dad is also looking forward to the music at the Split Summer Festival. I will try to post more tonight since it might be the last blog entry until we get to Rovinj.... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Bol July 22nd 2013

Left for Croatia at 7:30 Monday morning. Unfortunately we found out that we were short one bag. After the wring that I left the van locked from Carrie, we found that a group of younger people used a cell phone to unlock our vehicle. They went into the back of the van and took a bag that had things we brought for Domagoj's family and some things we bought in Dubrovnik. Took the route over the mountains through Vrgorac to Makarska and missed the 2:30 ferry. We ended up being the first 2 cars on the 6:00 ferry. We all swam at Makarska. There are few better places to swim here in terms of scenery with the mountains as the back drop. Got into Bol at 7:30. Went to the riva And ate supper. The town ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo July 21st 2013

Today was another long day but was well worth it. Here is the day in a nutshell... Got pulled over about 5 miles north of Sarajevo for speeding. Maybe the big red van is a bit noticeable. Anyway, after getting lectured by the female policija in a language I have a tough time understanding and then getting chewed out in the policija car by her partner, he finally asked me where we were going. When I told him Srebrenica, he slammed his ticket book down and told me to slow down. He assumed I was going to Belgrade. After that, we arrived in a small town called Han Pijesak where officer #2 stopped us. This time he said the road ahead was closeD and we could either wait 3 hours or try a detour...of the many ... read more
