So, overnight bus ride was interesting! First off, some jerk woke me up (JUST AFTER I managed to fall asleep) to ask to sit beside me when there were two other seats with just a backpack on them rather than a sleeping person. Jerk. Thankfully one stop later (about 20min) he moved over. I wasn’t taking any chances after that – instead of just sitting sideways huddled in a ball to sleep, I took full over – I can’t explain how I slept, but essentially I was completely across my two seats, with my butt touching the far-side/armrest by the window, then my legs crossed like a 4-yr old kid propped straight up into the window. I looked like a complete idiot, but I didn’t care – too comfy. No picture proof, but we’ll think to ... read more

Ok UK – you’ve made your point – I shouldn’t have boasted that I had 11 days of no rain in May... now you’ve given us 11 days of rain, so we’re even. Please stop. Today we headed out to hunt for (some of) the murals in Belfast/West Belfast. Of course it was ok when we left the hostel, but about 25min into our walk (so right where the murals start) it started to pour... so much pouring rain. I suppose there isn’t that much to type about today – we basically just wandered around Shankill and Falls Roads looking at the murals and getting soaked in the process. Umbrellas only do so much. The murals were neat to see, but it would have been nicer/we would have explored a lot more if we didn’t have ... read more

We added a camera to the electronic graveyard today... sigh. Em went for a walk this morning while I slept in and her bag got DRENCHED... so we’re up to a water-damaged iPod (Em), a smashed Blackberry (me) and now camera. We are silly. Anyway, thankfully the rest of our day was much better!! We went to the St. George Market first things first – it was a nice indoor market. We wandered around the small crafts tables and I tried a bunch of food all over the place (curries, salami, pork thing, this weird pink and yellow cheese). Their cupcakes looked AMAZING but we didn’t get any... and Em finally got to pet a sheep! Momentous occasion. The rest of the day was really just spent wandering around the city – it was a good ... read more

Lovely day today! We got to sleep in a little bit since we were in no rush to catch busses or anything. We got up around 9am, to the sound of cows gently moo-ing outside our window. Yep, hello rural UK. I had a good laugh though – I love it. (Sidenote: hostel guy was telling us they were late letting them into the gate-area this morning, so they were all bunched up against the fench moo-ing their displeasure. I guess we slept through that) Hostel had free breakky, but like real breakky with eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and toast. After we had our fill we puttered around until 10h50 to catch a bus up to Carrick-a-rede bridge... we decided to lug our stuff around with us because we didn’t trust hostel guy to still be ... read more

(PS from last night: after all that, there was a bus after all that doubt... so we made it to the bus station no problem. Yay. And the hostel agreed to hold onto our bags while we did the Causeway. Double yay!) This morning we headed off to the northern coast of Northern Ireland! It was beyond pouring rain in Belfast so we were a little nervous about hiking all day... but thankfully the further we got out of the city, the nicer it got! I tried napping on the bus but was unsuccessful... I watched all the small towns whizz by instead. I actually saw a lot of border collies at work in the fields, but all with cattle instead of sheep. I just kept thinking of the movie Babe. Aw. We managed to make ... read more

This morning we headed out to Edinburgh Zoo – about 30min out of town I suppose, it wasn’t a bad bus ride. We sat on the top of a double-decker at the front so that was a fun experience :) It’s a unique vantage point too because it looks like you’re going to hit everything... and I mean everything haha – cars, posts, trees, buildings lol. The Zoo was nice – not the best I’ve been too by any means but still nice. Of course it’s on a freakin’ hill... Edinburgh is honestly like the European Seattle/San Fran. We got to see the panda bears they just got here in Edinburgh about a year ago. You have to book a time and they bring you in by group as to not overwhelm the pandas. The female ... read more

Busy, busy day today! This morning we got to sleep in a bit which the first time so far – which was nice. At 11am we went to do the Free Tour through Edinburgh which was great as always – I love the free tours! First stop was Parliament! Our guide gave us a super long overview of Scottish history which was really interesting. (PS our guide was Canadian, wahoo!). Next up was Mercat Cross – this cross like structure where people used to get nailed to the wail by the ear for stealing things and such. Yeah, that would suck. There’s a giant statue of David Hume near the Cathedral – with a big shiny toe. Apparently the locals rub his toe for good luck – that’s neat. We also walked around some of the ... read more

(Sidenote: wi-fi in Edinburgh only works in the very cold lounge area – I will post my blogs, but no photos for the time being) Nice and calm day today – we took the 9am bus from Inverness to Edinburgh. I wanted to nap most of the way – I’ve picked up some nasty cold of some sort and want to sleep it out of my system haha. However, I only managed to sleep for about 30min or so. Oh bother. At least I got to eat a bunch of like the freshest grapes ever. Don’t know of those help my cold, but so nummy. The ride was nice, once again. Half the drive seemed to be the same as when we came up from Glasgow – it’s fun seeing the different towns and their names; ... read more

First things first, HAPPY CANADA DAAAAAAY!! (Sidenote from early this morning – our amazing co-roomies (4 other girls) decided that setting an alarm to blast this morning to some One Direction song would be totally ok... it just kept looping and looping and looping. I was *THIS* close to sitting up in bed and freaking out at them but I didn’t move out of spite. Way to have horrible hostel etiquette guys... geez) Anyway, this morning we bussed up to Urquhart Castle – about 35min south of here. The ride was lovely (as they all seem to be in Scotland) as we drove down along Loch Ness. Didn’t see Nessie, but did see a lot of boats and cute little houses that have amazing views of the Loch. Urquhart Castle is a strange little castle... it’s ... read more

We had a lovely Scottish day today! Took the bus up to Inverness – a 4 hour drive through the countryside and highlands!! It was absolutely gorgeous! We saw tons of sheep and lochs and hills and sheep. So many sheep. The sky was really lovely too – the clouds were low and just the contrast was nice. We also napped half the way which was nice haha. Passing through some of the small towns, I definitely want to come back to Scotland some time to do some more trekking... I just won’t fly back in through Glasgow lol. Anyway, we arrived in Inverness and found our hostel without too much trouble. The city really isn’t that large, so just walking across the Old Town only took us about 15min. The hostel is really cute – ... read more
