After a reasonable so called ‘American Breakfast’ comprising eggs, toast, pineapple jam and coffee we headed for the nearest river trip station. We passed through incredibly busy streets selling a bewildering variety of stationery, hair accessories and toys. A ticket for all day travel on the boats plying up and down the river was only 100 baht each (conversion rate approx. 67 baht per pound sterling). We caught the special tourist boat (which has running commentary - in difficult to comprehend English) but ticket also valid on the same companies express boats. I can’t pretend it is the most scenic journey except for some exceptional wats. We stopped off at the Royal Palace compound of temples and other royal buildings as the starting point of the walk recommended in Lonely Planet. It is absolutely stunning -
