For my 4th year of my undergrad I'll be working in Oruro, Bolivia on a maternal health project.

As many of you know I was planning a trip to Iquique from Oruro to celebrate the new year. What began as a 4 day trip by myself, became a week long trip surrounded by great friends. My co-worker and I left Oruro on the 27th on a 10 hour bus direct to Iquique. Since we became so used to buying snacks once on the bus, we made the naive mistake of not bringing any with us. BAD IDEA! Nothing to buy on the bus, at the border or anywhere along the 10 hour trip. Furthermore, we were delayed 3 hours at the border and arrived in Iquique at 1am. Needless to say not much open. Luckily, we checked into our hostel (note: after calling and e-mailing a number of times, only my reservation made via ... read more

Sorry I haven't written in so long, this is in fact a good thing since I have not been bored for quite some time! New volunteers in Oruro as meant an expanded social circle and more to do after work I have a new roommate and so stuff around the house gets split in two and I have someone to hang out with at night. She organized my birthday party, that rocked :) I was woken up at 8h30 by singing at my door, my host-family brought cake and hot chocolate to wake me up! Then a great day at the markets, found some amazing shoes for 22$ (so now I can wear them to go out dancing!). Then supper with 14 of my new friends at a great grill house 2 steps from my apartment. ... read more

A friend who I met here told me the best way to describe Bolivia is that everything that is simple at home becomes impossible, and everything impossible at home becomes simple. Eg. morning latte very difficult to find a decent one, but weekend soaking in hot springs cheap and easy. Something I've found challenging since living in downtown Toronto is that restaurants have very limited opening hours, and if they aren't open they all but disappear behind corrugated metal gates and thus can be difficult to locate! But...when you do finally find them they rock! I had lunch for 10 Bs. (~1.50 CAD) at a vegetarian resto: cream of eggplant soup, veggie salad, lentil stew with potato taters, fresh apple/papaya juice and fruit salad and yogurt for dessert :D Then after a little work in my ... read more

So I'm a horrible blogger and I apologize. To recap the last 2 weeks or so, I've accomplished the 1st part of the 1st step of my mandate (a database), settled into my new apartment, and went to Copacabana which resulted in 2 days spent in a Bolivian hospital due to bad trout. For those of you who don't know this yet, I'm here as part of my IDS co-op degree for the next 10 months working on a maternal and infant health project. My stage is part of the Uniterra program, a joint venture between the Center for International Studies and Co-operation (CECI) and the World University Service of Canada (WUSC). While here I will be working on a 10 month mandate for the Un Aguayo para un Parto sin Riesgos project, ie. and aguayo ... read more

Hi all! So just a little note to say that my trip here was exceedingly uneventful! All is well minus a slight headache from the altitude and a burn on my thumb from boiling hot coffee in Miami (Note to Pizza Hut Express: just because it says caution hot on the cup doesn´t mean you should set the machine to over 100 deg. C). Getting through customs was a breeze, isn´t it great to be Canadian? My driver was awesome, he was a useful source of quick entry info and understood my spanish ;) My hotel is a cute inn with complimentary breakfast buffet and free internet in the lobby, booya! So far so good...can´t wait to see the office and meet my co-workers tomorrow. More news soon! Jenn... read more

Today I finally packed my bags and confirmed my flight itinerary, I'm ready to go...except the official contract still has to be signed thursday! It's so hard to think of everything you could need for a whole year! Trying not to overpack since then I'll be stuck lugging it all around for nothing. It's so exciting for this to finally be a reality! 3 years in the making! I can't wait to settle in and get to work on the project. I'll be systematizing the "Aguayo para un parto sin riesgos" project that aims to help women access pre-during and post-natal care, especially in rural areas. As well working to integrate traditional medicine in addition to modern medicine. I'm looking forward to using and improving my Spanish and hopefully learning some Quechua and Ayamara while I'm ... read more
