We were up bright and early the next morning to unfortunately a rather dull and moody sky. Through breaks in the cloud we could glance some snow capped peaks, and hoped the weather would hold out for our big ticket items. James and I got all the kit and caboodle on for a day's introduction to the art of Ice Climbing on the Fox Glacier. we had big ideas of going straight onto conquering Mt Blanc and then Everest but when we got down to it- bloody hard work! It was awesome to get an idea what real Mountaineers get up to and after doing a fair bit of abseiling and rock climbing in the past I felt pretty confident, but it was nice to get that rush of nerves again when you feel a little ... read more

A few photos taken by our awesome guides on the Canyoning trip We did mid hike. After 7 hours beasting it through the gorge, there is no wonder that we found the Abel Tasman Great Walk harder than we thought! Great fun. If you look closely in the jumping photo you can see the moment I cut my nose open before even getting to the canyon by not holding my helmet down! I was pretty blasé initially but got a bit nervous after I didn't let go of the rope in our first abseil. It created quite a funny photo and I like to think it was due to reflex survival instinct which then sent me flying back against the wall. Still the rest went fine without any injury and Becks, myself and James loved the ... read more

So it finally starts again. The time has finally arrived to finish work and be free once more to travel the world! With 6 weeks planned in South Island New Zealand and then 4 months in South America there are so many adventures to be had, and this time with someone to share every exciting and exhausting moment with. Becks and I are on a mission to do all The Great Walks in New Zealand to give our travel a bit more of a twist. We start with a 5 day paddle on the Wanganui River. I did the first two days with A dozen or so of us from Palmy Hospital, opting for a sea kayak to attack the rapids (and the canoeists) with. It was a great amount of freedom being able to navigate ... read more

Taking some time off from the difficult life sprawled on Rio´s beaches to update this bad boy. From pretty, tranquil, rabid-dog infested Colonia, we headed to Montevideo, the spectacular capital of Uruguay. My travelling style of go now, plan later, although offers spontaniety, excitement and flexibility can spectaculary go wrong at times. This began to look like one of those times as the direct bus from Montevideo to Iguassu Falls was something of a convenient transportation fantasy dreamt up in my head and it looked like the whole Uruguay expedition was turning into a complete farce, the logical and universally preferred option of a direct luxury bus service from BA to Iguassu having been foregone for numerous local, national and international buses that we hoped could be linked together to get us there. In the meantime, ... read more

Back to Auckland, and back to another Nomad hostel with a feel of a tower block in a run down council estate. A vibe that seems to work if you are taking advantage of the "power hour" available in the rowdy bar downstairs, but not so great when you feel rotten and can only really lie around a 10 bed dorm all day. The pain killers were doing little to shift the pain at night, and the icing on the ailing cake came with an added feeling of nausea and fatigue. Yay. Thankfully there were a few upsides, I mean nothing in my travels can ever be overbearingly negative, even if this was my lowest point. Tears of joy were almost cascading down my stubbly cheeks when I found out that the Jacuzzi on the roof ... read more

From Wellington, the vibrant capital of culture and wind I headed on up to a quaint little place called Turangi, where I met Liv, a mate from the Oz travel days, and where we proceeded to wait for 3 days in vain for the weather to clear/ move out of the guaranteed suicide category, on The Tongariro Crossing. It is meant to be "The best day walk on the planet" but as experienced guides were even refusing to go due to the blizzards and avalanches, it was probably best we didn't chance it. Instead we entertained ourselves with Jenga, a highly competitive game of Pictionary with some Germans, lecturing the new (as of 3 days) hostel owners on "how to run a backpackers" (honestly our advice is like gold dust) and highlighting my hair Nordic Blonde. ... read more

I left off at the furthest South I went on the South Island- Te Anau. I had an incredible "tramp" the kiwi term for trek, or in this case huge-mountain-slog as I spent a night above the tree line, and experienced my first real "alpine conditions" which really should have been done with crampons and an emergency beacon... but they were a bit pricey. I took an ice axe though, having sought some great advice from some germans (they are everywhere) that if I find myself sliding down the ridiculously steep slope either side of the path, I could sink the ice axe in and stop myself plummeting 300 metres to some rather gnarly looking rocks. The views from the top of Mount Luxmore were beautiful, with low lying cloud swirling around the jagged mountain tops. ... read more

So a rapid fire update. I spent a Saturday night in Sydney, which is as eventful as can be when you are in bed by 10:30pm thanks to Goon (boxed wine) and the ridiculous invention of 1 hour free drinks... mistakenly interpreted by me and Dane (Canadian mate I know from Tubing in Laos, who happened to be in Sydney for the same time as me) as meaning 1 hour all you can drink. Anyway, you can see why these blogs have grown rather thin in recent months, as the culture and history of India is much more interesting to read than the escapades of a night out. The next day, our last days in Syndey we ambled about the botanic gardens, posed with a couple on their wedding day, decided the Opera House was slightly ... read more

It feels miles away where I last posted a blog, in Western Australia actually, a town called Geraldton, using the free wireless of a "restaurant" (term used loosley) called Mc Donalds. Ever in an adventure, moments after updating the blog Lancelot made an entrance fit for a knight who has failed in slaying a dragon and rather sheepishly announces that "Ze keys are locked in ze van". Brilliant. After scouring the internet for locksmiths working at 8 pm and getting a rather pricey quotation, we decided to put our DIY skills to the test. Whilst I youtubed all the (worryingly large number) of "how to break into a car" videos, Lancelot managed to bring back a bounty of tools for the operation. Wedging the top part of the driver's door open by a millimetre or two ... read more

It lies there, motionless. An incredible creature, strangely beautiful. Even with its wings lying limp against the tarmac, its power in those knife-sharp talons and perfectly crafted beak seemed to demand respect. Seeing such a spectacular eagle this close made you almost feel lucky. A privilege to be face to face with the king of the skies. Hours before it would have been soaring high over the Australian outback, over land dotted by scrub and bushes, termite mounds and spinifex, Cattle and Kangaroos. It would have looked so graceful in its elegant descent back to earth, where the flesh of a dead Emu awaited the fate sealed by the Eagle’s beak and talons. A beak now dripping deep red blood attached to an awkwardly angled feathered head. Talons now sticking up uselessly into the big ... read more
