Yet again, our choice was Discover Dorset tours to explore Bath. Their walking tours are good and their tours start from Bournemouth. Bath is famous for its Roman Baths – the hot water spring baths. We were picked up by the Discover Dorset tour mini bus at the Bournemouth station. There were already other tourists in the bus from different countries. We then headed off towards Bath. Arriving in Bath, we walked straight towards The Royal Crescent. It gets its name because of its shape. A perfect crescent with windows on its walls – a great symmetrical architecture, I must say! I wondered what those windows and doors on its wall were. Our Discover Dorset walking tour guide, Jim, told the history of the crescent. It is a row of 30 terraced houses ! After standing ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » Stonehenge November 4th 2012

On a wet Sunday morning, we took a bus from Bournemouth to Salisbury and then Stonehenge. Arriving at Stonehenge, we rented a pair of audio guides and walked our way towards the Stonehenge stones. Stonehenge is an ancient stone circle. It has an outer circle and an inner circle. The stone circles comprise of stones placed vertically to form a circle and another set stones placed horizontally on top of the vertical ones. It is said to have been evolved between 3000 B.C and 1600 B.C and is aligned to the rising and setting of the sun. But they say, the exact purpose still remains a mystery. After Stonehenge, we drifted off to Old Sarum, which has 5000 years of history. Old Sarum is a fort on a hilltop. It dates back to time before the ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Nottinghamshire » Nottingham November 15th 2011

My work allowed me to stay in Nottingham for a year. Nottingham – the place of Robin Hood, whose stories we are all familiar with. It a relaxed city unlike other bigger cities in the UK. Not much of a hustle-bustle but quite calm. There are many places to visit in and around Nottingham. Wollaton Hall, Nottingham Castle , Matlock Bath, Attenborough , Old Market square amongst host of other tourist attractions. My favourites are the Old Market Square and Attenborough. Old Market square because, it was the heart of the city. Shopping, pubbing, indulging in food from across the world – you could do it all here. And Attenborough because of the memorable bicycle ride to this place from Nottingham. My friends and I planned to cycle to this place on a weekend. I had ... read more

Well, it was just a day’s trip to Cambridge in October. My parents were visiting me in Nottingham and we planned to hop over to Cambridge for a day. We took a train from Nottingham to Cambridge. At Cambridge, we got on to a Hop-On Hop-Off local sightseeing bus. It did pass by many historical monuments. We did not get down at most of these places as we would get late for the Punting tour on River Cam. While on the Hop On-Hop Off, we passed by Trinity College , Cambridge American Cemetery Memorial ( in memory of American soldiers killed in WW2) , the Mathematical bridge and a host of colleges. Then after lunch, we went on Punting tour ( boat tour) on river Cam. It was a lady who was our guide and also ... read more

The trip to Lake district was no less than an adventure. My friends and I planned for a weekend getaway to Lake District. We started a little late from Nottingham on a Saturday morning. While on the highway, the Tomtom ( GPS navigation system) started giving trouble. We thought we were on the wrong route, but somehow kept navigating towards Lake District. Sometime around noon, the car broke down in the middle of the road and wouldn’t start. Amongst us, those who knew about cars, looked into everything that could have possibly gone wrong. Since they couldn’t figure out much, one of us called the car rental customer care and reported the problem. I do not remember what exactly they said, but help did not arrive. We were stranded there unaware of what to do next. ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 10th 2011

From Italy, we made our way into France. We drove directly to Paris. As I sighted the Eiffel Tower from our bus, I was in sheer excitement! We were to first take the River Seine boat cruise that afternoon. Hopped off our bus. Our tour manager got everyone the tickets and we then hopped on to the boat. The cruise starts from near the Eiffel Tower and one can get a complete, unobstructed view of the tower. The cruise boat had chairs on the upper deck and was open to sky. The cruise started and we sailed beneath a number of bridges. We first passed under the LE PONT ALEXANDRE-III bridge. It has a big pillar on each of the four corners of the bridge. On top of these pillars are statues of horses with wings ... read more
