So, I have reached Lima, capital city of Peru and am currently afflicted with Peruvian swine flu… actually that’s probably not true but it makes for dramatic effect. The reality is I have succumbed to a very nasty ‘dolor de garganta’ - sore throat to you and me which makes me sound like Honor Blackman on acid. Feel as rough as a badger´s arse so im guzzling paracetamol and the Peruvian equivalent of Lemsip ‘ tastes even worse than chichi but when overlanding there is not time to be sick so Im resolutely ignoring the fact I feel pants and hoping the cold will go away as quickly as it appeared. Last time i left you, i was in Arequippa on the verge of trying Peru´s famous ´cuy´ - guinea pig: the gastronomic equivalent of ... read more

Hello all from deepest darkest peru! Last time i wrote I was in Bolivia it seems an aeon away. Am currently in Cusco having just returned from a 4 day trek in the Andes culminating in a visit to the magical Machu Pichu - truly one of the wonders of the world. The last few days have been a huge mental and physical test. Hiking up to 4800m where the air is so thin every step is an effort and your legs feel like jelly. However, the people and the scenery have been just amazing....a highlight of my time here to date. Yet, i last left you in Potosi so I shall rewind and skip through the last couple of weeks. La Paz - highest capital city in the world at 3600m. Spectacularly situated in the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department October 23rd 2009

Hello all from Bolivia - from Potosi - the highest city in the world - at an altitude of almost 4000 metres. Im in a lovely hostal/hotel and free to write at length so grab Yyourself a cup of tea and nestle down as this is a long (but hopefully interesting) one. Here´s the latest installment since my last update from Salta in Northern Argentina. 16 October - Leaving Salta in the dark we drove West towards the great Andes and Chile. It was an arduous 12 hours in the truck to get to the Chilean border and into San Pedro de Atacama. The truck rumbled up and up with all of us under strict instructions to drink plenty of water as we ascended the mountains. These are harsh places and as we rose higher ... read more

So far...... Im currently waiting for Sam to get ready so we can catch a bus out to the Argentine side of Iguazu Falls so thought id grab a mo on the old blog for an update... Buenos Aires First impressions are that its a huge place - giant tree lined boulveards reach out on the grid like street system in all directions. One street - 9 Julio Ave - is renowned for being the largest in the world. 16 lanes of honking exhaust spewing traffic. Vertiginous buildings line the avenues rising up from street level adorned with wrought iron balconies and dessicated paint. Juxtaposed to these grand icons of Latin America lie the occasional modern brutalist monstrosity. Dotted on nearly every street corners are farmacia´s and coffee houses and on many streets there are flower ... read more
