Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido May 9th 2011

We arrived in El Nido at about 11:40 pm, about 6 hours later than was originally forecast (see Coron blog) and found that the lack of information we encountered on the way to the island continued upon arrival in El Nido… word went around the boat that we arrived after the port was closed and we could not leave the boat… then word went around that we could leave the boat but had to stay in the port office until 6 am in the morning… then we made it to the office and people were allowed to leave… who knows. I ended leaving Venny at the port and wandering around El Nido at about midnight looking for a room which was no bueno (see husband contract page #3)… but we ended up at a solid beach ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron May 4th 2011

I was very anxious to make it to the Philippines… mainly to visit the city of El Nido on the island of Palawan… the only issue with El Nido is that getting there takes some time as you can only get there by A) flying into the city of Coron on Busuanga island and then catching an 8 hour ferry to El Nido or B) Flying to Puerto Princessa and then taking an 8 hour jeepney ride from there to El Nido. We opted to fly into Coron as the town has its own attractions and a 8 hour boat ride seemed more scenic than 8 hours stuffed in a Jeepney driving from Puerto Princesa to El Nido. Coron Flying into Coron and looking out the window you got a good vibe about the place. As ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui April 30th 2011

We arrived at our next destination, Koh Samui, by boat and braced ourselves for the upcoming ritual duel with taxi drivers at the boat dock… the only problem was that instead of encountering the usual throngs of taxi drivers vying for your business, we found the opposite… tumbleweeds and crickets. To be more specific… all the locals on the ferry cleared out and about 15 of us tourists were left in a vacant parking lot… the only people around were about 5 drunk taxi drivers at the back of the lot and they found our predicament borderline hilarious and started quoting outrageous prices for a ride into town. Luckily there was a restaurant open nearby and I walked over to see if we could find a decent ride to Chewang Beach, where we would be staying. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Railay April 26th 2011

1st things 1st I’m glad that we actually gave Railay a chance… the Similan Islands are a tough act to follow for darn near any beach destination but Railay drew the short straw and initially got a poor reception from us… I would say it initially earned a firm C-… to set the scene: Railay has two separate crescent shaped bays with a sliver of land in between them, one side is the “backpacker” side and the other side is the “Resort” side… class warfare at its finest. We arrived on the “backpacker” side in a longtail boat and found that the backpacker side did not actually have a beach at all… the boat pulled into mangroves and because the bay was shallow, we had to jump out of the boat into the brown water and ... read more

Similan Islands National Park After visitng the Surin Islands we packed up the circus and headed back to Khao Lak to overnight before continuing on to our next destination… Similan Islands National Park. The Similan Islands are about an hour and a half off the coast of Thailand and comprised of 9 separate islands… of which 3 are off limits to humans because they have breeding turtle populations and only two can accommodate overnight visitors (#4 & 8). We would be staying 3 nights on island #4. Our hotel arranged our transfer to the islands and we (along with a few others) were picked up bright and early and taken to the company’s offices to pay an extortionate “deposit” for snorkel equipment and listen to the standard speech about not stepping on coral (which some idiots ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Lak April 18th 2011

After leaving Phi Phi we made our way to Khao Lak, which would be our jumping off point to Surin Islands National Park. Surin Island NP is made up of 5 separate islands but visitors are only allowed to stay overnight on one island. Accommodations are limited to either renting a bungalow or a tent from the parks service, both of which are very basic. We rented a fan bungalow but don’t let the term bungalow lure you into thinking it was the lap of luxury or anything. The room was pretty basic and we only had electricity in shifts during certain hours which helped to make nighttime interesting … but more on that later. The Surin Islands Initial impression… the Surin Islands are beautiful (I don’t use that word much). As our boat approached the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 14th 2011

After departing India we did a complete 180 and headed to the opposite end of the spectrum… Thailand. We headed to Phuket where we had to overnight before catching the morning ferry to Phi Phi island. What a difference a day makes… we left India, a rather conservative country and ended up smack dab in the middle of hedonistic Phuket (Patong anyway). Phuket is the kind of island that has something for everyone, ranging from a nice family day at the beach … to partaking in some of the islands (not so) thinly veiled sex tourism industry and everything in between. In Phuket we were also re-introduced to the Thai “ladyboys,” (cross dressing, transgender thai men) who are readily available around the main tourist areas to service the needs of those with a more refined pallet… ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » New Delhi April 8th 2011

After visiting Varanasi we packed up the circus and headed for our next destination, New Delhi. Although we had originally flown into Delhi we had only stayed there a few hours (just long enough to catch a train) so this would be new territory for us… but first we had to make it there. Getting to Delhi basically required us to retrace both train trips we had taken prior (Delhi-Agra, Agra-Varanasi) but as one very long overnight train. After the missing bag incident and people wandering the train on our Agra-Varanasi leg we opted to get a first class ticket because each berth has hard doors (as opposed to a curtain) and would allow a pessimist of my stature some peace of mind. We reported to Varanasi train station in time for our 3:00 pm train ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi April 4th 2011

After enjoying Agra we were ready to catch the train to our next destination… Varanasi. The story of how we even got the tickets is long and I won’t bore you with the extended version but it includes being shuffled through 5 different ticket lines at the station before still leaving empty handed, then eventually getting them through another ticket office… only to find out that we were overcharged for them by about 1000 rupees. I guess I should just look at the glass as half full in that we even got the tickets. We made it to the Agra train station late for our train (not my fault), but luckily the trains in India tend to run late so our train had not left yet but we had to hustle or we would have been ... read more

As someone who loves to travel I also love just listening to other people's travel stories and tales from the road. Through listening to the travel stories of others I have heard tales of different destinations as past travelers are usually all too happy to tell you how great a destination is and what you MUST do there. Over time I have noticed one exception to this rule… the nation of India. When listening to those who have visited India, any reviews of the nation are almost universally preceded by a disclaimer from past travelers who seem anxious to portray the nation in an accurate light, while at the same time not discouraging prospective travelers from visiting for themselves. I guess we were undeterred because we included India in our itinerary, largely to experience the Taj ... read more
