In retrospect
Enjoyed your perspectives Gerry. This is the season of good cheer. Also a down time in Oz where we can reflect on those places in the World we have visited and wish to visit. And as we sip a cold beer...time to remember how fortunate we be.

Beer
Coming from Australia with its extensive and healthy beer culture I found your Czech beer blog illuminating. My first taste of Czech beer was in Vietnam when I met bloggers Kris & Kate of Rat on the Road, being their preferred drop. You say beer is best consumed at a temperature between 7 to 10 degrees C. Is that ice cold or cool? In Oz we like it ice cold or the colder the better, while I understand the Brits like it room temperature which I could not stomach.

Agree Completely
I love ice cold beer on a hot day, or any type of day. Seven to 10 is ideal for Czech style beer. The lighter lagers are better cold, as in the US.

Planning for my 2nd visit
I only visited San Diego once. But, I might want to go to San Diego again and join the HACK-O-WEEN hackathon on the 1st Ave this coming Fri, Sat, and Sun. Do you have any hotel suggestion?

Stay Downtown
If you are flying into town, stay downtown, take the light rail to and from. Downtown hotels are easy access to light rail, and many downtown activities, like Little Italy. We like the Residence Inn, which has free parking if you have a car.

Political prisoners in Siberia

Burlaks
They are NOT prisoners. They are free wage workers. :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlak

I'm with you on 50!
Both my husband and I have been to all 50 states. We've actually lived in 15 states. My last state was Vermont and my husband's last state was Arkansas. We'll be glad to join you in that champagne some day. Hopefully our paths will cross.

I'm going to Norway to walk the St. Olavsleden pilgrim trail in July...
I've seen the aurora...in Pennsylvania driving to my girlfriend's (now wife) home. Really inexpensive...the drive that is...not the wife!
24th May 2017

All the places I loved to visit in the past...
have been overrun by tourists. Now I'm going off the tourist trail to find other special places. Norway is next. With the high cost of living there I don't expect to see many tourist and know there is great scenery.

Norway Expensive
If you are going for the Aurora, go to Alaska instead. Closer and cheaper.

"one camp, ten thousand lives, ten thousand stories"
I think it is important that you tell some of these stories Gerry...especially poignant for your family...Lest We Forget.

Taking time
It must have been hard to pen this blog Gerry. Thank you for reminding us of what has been and could have been for your parents and Japanese Americans in WWII and how alienation be it for colour race or creed must be seen for what it is...inappropriate fear and discrimination that rips at the fabric of humanity and shatters so many lives. Thank you for your courage to tell your story so courageously.

Alaska
Lots of great info thanks... I will be travelling to Alaska ( From UK) staying near Anchorage in June so it's good to have any travel tips. And have you any idea why car rental is so expensive compared to other places in US.
22nd April 2017

Not So Bad
Car rental did not seem too expensive. Mostly, I used the car around Anchorage, and for a drive into the countryside. Best to fly to Fairbanks or take the train.
