"LIFE'S JOURNEY is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "Holy shit, what a ride!" - Mavis Leyrer age 83 I came upon this quote the other morning while I was having breakfast at a little place here in Bastrop called Maxine’s (http://www.maxinesonmain.com/). It’s a deliciously quaint little small-town dinery that dishes up fried southern specialties (with an emphasis on special) such as chicken gizzards and catfish, serves drinks in large mason jars, and does it all with the kind of leisurely unhurried pace that reminds you that you really shouldn’t have anything better to do with your day. By the by, they also offer to adjust your attitude with one of three sizes of cast-iron pizza pans, and post a ... read more

Who can honestly say that they could live without the Internet these days? I mean, it might as well be crack; once you get started and realize even a fraction of its potential, you are hooked: you will pay good money to stay hooked, and you feel withdrawal symptoms after even a day goes by without it. I knew I would need to have nearly daily Internet access on my trip; not just for blogging purposes and to stay in touch with loved ones and friends on a more personal level; but also to check weather, book tickets, pay bills, download porn, and send money to those poor Nigerian astronauts who need my bank account number to get back to Earth. There are a few little Internet tricks I learned along the way, which I am ... read more

Last night I spent tossing and turning in a twisted dream-world where all of the places I'll be going were mixed up in my head. I woke up sometime around 4am, thinking of a story that Elisa (of the travel clinic) told me. It was about a man who traveled to India. While he was there, the bus he was riding on ran another bus off the road. While it was fortunate that he was not in the other bus, he then had to help carry the bodies up from the ravine where it crashed. He was so traumatized by the experience that he immediately came back to Texas, probably never to set foot in India again. Now I've heard stories like this before, many of them centering on India and parts of South America, but ... read more

Today I decided to take care of any health requirements necessary. I was referred to a travel clinic: this is a clinic which specializes in poking adventurous travelers like myself full of needle-holes and then charging a lot of money. Not a bad racket, really. I went to Passport Health of Austin (http://www.passporthealthaustin.com/) and met with a nice lady named Elisa, who sat down and calmly explained all of the horrible lingering deaths that were possible from insect bites, eating, drinking, animals, birds, breathing, walking, touching people casually, touching people intimately, and just plain going about your business without doing any of the prior. We discussed which kind of anti-malarial drug I would prefer: 1) The one that causes psychotic episodes and horrendous nightmares (been there, done that); 2) The one that causes nausea, yeast infection ... read more

Today I did my first trial pack for the trip. Overall, it went pretty well, but I think I can still improve. The thing is, we ladies have to figure out how to look good for long periods of time without the aid of our walk-in closet, curling iron, jungle of purses and scarves, or gigantic Box-O-Makeup. There are ways to make your clothes go further. This first picture is basicaly all I will be wearing during the trip, and I'm even considering weaning it down a bit more. So you see 4 bottoms and 4 tops, right? Wrong. That's really 6 bottoms (since one pair of pants converts to shorts and one converts into capris), and 6 tops (one shirt is a convertible long-sleeve/short-sleeve, and I can use my bikini top in a pinch for ... read more

One month to go. I've been dreaming about this trip for at least 7 years, and now that I try to remember, I don't even know how I got the idea in the first place. My itinerary is pretty unsettled, but I plan to start in Hong Kong and make my way through China, Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Burma. I'll be leaving on June 8, 2009. "But that's monsoon season!" you say. And you're right: but this is the only time I have to travel, and I'm hoping to save a few bucks here and there what with it being low season. I have two serious goals for my travels: 1. To take a cooking class in every country I visit; and 2. To get a picture of me with a bowl of rice ... read more
