It’s been a couple of days since the last blog, so there’s a bit to catch up on. My reasons for falling behind will become apparent. I got up on Monday morning, packed and caught a cab down to the car hire place. I picked up the car no problem and was off. Fortunately it was Labour Day so there wasn’t a lot of traffic about. First problem was that my GPS was still in kilometres but I changed that once I stopped in Lexington. Lexington is just outside Boston so I was there in under half an hour. It’s a picturesque little town. I found a carpark, parked there and got out to have a look around. I soon found the visitors centre, had a look in there and talked to the lady. As I ... read more

Finally I could really sleep in. I didn’t have to be up early to catch a plane, train or bus, and I didn’t even have to check out. As a result, I left the hotel at about 12 to embark upon the so-called “Freedom Trail”. The trail is a series of historical buildings and places in Boston, mostly related to the American Revolution. They have mapped out a path between these locations and it was this that I planned to follow. First thing was to get something to eat. As it is a weekend and I seem to be staying in the financial district, there wasn’t much open near the hotel. So I walked towards the beginning of the trail and eventually found a small food court. I picked up a chicken sandwich and went over ... read more

Thursday started early, but I almost missed it. When setting an alarm on my phone, it defaults to the current day so I had two 4:00am alarms set for the wrong day. Fortunately, I had a dream where I missed an alarm for something because I had decided to sleep outside for some reason. This started me awake at 4:15am, which was really lucky! I was able to get ready in time, even considering that the airport shuttle arrived early. There’s not a lot to say about the flight to Toronto. It was on time and good enough. Once we landed, I had about an hour’s wait until the flight to Quebec city boarded. This flight was on a small turbo-prop plane which made sense when we landed at Quebec city airport – it was like ... read more

Another early start for the second day of the epic train trip. We needed to be ready outside the hotel at 6:15 and we were. The bus was on time, but apparently the train had some congestion getting out of the rail yard so our friendly driver Norm took us for a small tour of Kamloops while we waited for the train. Once Norm got the call that everything was ready, we headed down to the station and boarded the train. Without further delay, we departed. Breakfast was quickly served, and although it wasn’t as nice as the first day, it was still pretty good. Oddly, the cheese omelette was accompanied by vegetables such as zucchini which I don’t normally have for breakfast. There’s not a whole lot to talk about for the trip – the ... read more

I am writing this on Monday night having just returned to my hotel in Kamloops after dinner. Kamloops is the overnight stop for the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Banff. Despite not doing much, it’s been a pretty tiring couple of days. The flight from Sydney went fine. I was quite impressed with Virgin Australia’s international service. The staff were really good and very friendly. I was also lucky enough to score a seat behind the “bulkhead” as they call it. The downside, of course, is that’s where they put people who have a baby with them so they can put a bassinet on the wall. On the plus side, you get extra leg room but without the responsibility that comes with having an exit row seat. Of course there was a baby, but she ... read more

On Sunday I am flying out for 6 weeks in Canada and the USA. The plan is to write another travel blog with plenty of photos that I hope you will enjoy. To start off, I thought I would give a brief rundown of my itinerary. I arrive in Vancouver on the same day I leave Sydney, changing planes in L.A. on the way. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling error early in my planning, I am only spending the night in Vancover before catching the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff via Kamloops. I will have most of the day to look around Banff before I catch a bus to Calgary. I am staying the night there because I have an early flight in the morning to Quebec City, changing planes again in Toronto. I will have the ... read more

So I left Aalborg via train, heading up to Hirtshals where the ferry to Norway left from. I arrived with plenty of time to spare so I grabbed a bite to eat. It was only later that I remembered that the class I had booked on the ferry “Catch Me If You Can” was a restaurant, not just a deck. Oh well, I still managed to fit in a nice dessert of chocolate cake and ice cream while on board. And more importantly, my table was at the very front of the ship…. Not that there was anything to see besides ocean. I read my book for the entire journey. Arriving in Kristiansand I was most pleased to see some decent hills. Northern Germany and Denmark were nice enough to look at, but really was very ... read more

On Tuesday morning I headed to Hamburg central train station and boarded my train to Copenhagen. The journey was nice, but uneventful. Total time was about 4 hours, but that was broken up by a 45 minute period where we had to leave the train. As it travels in the hull of the ferry, I guess it’s a safety issue. It was a perfect time for lunch and the ferry offered much more than the train did, so it was good. Arrived at Copenhagen station on time and, after grabbing some kroner, I took a taxi to the hotel. When I showed the driver my hotel name, I caught his eyes lighting up briefly - I figured that meant it was either a long way away, or very close. Within 2 blocks I knew the answer ... read more

So I arrived in Berlin. The first thing to impress me was the fleet of taxis waiting outside the airport - every one was a Mercedes. Sure, they’re made in Germany, but it’s not exactly what you expect. I still like London taxis best though. I reached my hotel and after a small nap I headed out for a quick look around my hotel. It seems the hotel was in the middle of a major shopping district, which has little appeal to me (especially with my already full suitcase!) I was a little surprised by a couple of the places - a Head shop (marijuana paraphernalia) and an Erotic Museum. It was like being in Amsterdam again! But I settled for a delicious dinner of bratwurst on a roll and headed back to my hotel for ... read more

We arrived in Istanbul after a long drive. I think it was about 8pm when we got there. Driving around the city was an experience - I am very glad I didn’t decide to drive myself this time around! The hotel looks very nice - it’s 5 stars and the foyer is very fancy. The rooms were nice and large, the bed huge and very comfortable, and I felt like I had finally got what I deserve! There were a couple of minor issues with the bathroom, but nothing major. Apparently the couple on the tour had a stinky bathroom, so I think I got a good room. One odd thing was that in my bathroom, on the mirror, was a sticker saying that the tap water was not drinkable. Nobody else in the hotel seems ... read more
