I'm sat on the Greyhound bus just now heading down the coast from Airlie Beach to Rainbow Beach (14 hour journey!) and decided to pass the time by catching up with my blogging. Although the movie the driver's started playing is 'Legally Blonde' so I'm half tempted to watch that! Soooo, after Fiji the next part of the trip was Sydney, for Mardi Gras 2010. It was Andrew's last week and we'd just got back from Fiji so the first few days were spent relaxing. Siobhan and Blair arrived from Melbourne and Heron Island so it was nice catching up with everyone, although for Andrew and I, our main aim for the week was to learn our dance routine for the Mardi Gras parade on the Saturday. With much trepidation (and a shot of Vodka on ... read more

We flew to Fiji with V Australia which was something I was looking forward to, being the new airline of the Virgin group. I was really impressed with the touch screen in flight entertainment, although apart from it being a brand new plane, everything else was pretty standard (not really sure what else I was expecting!) After landing into Nadi, we were taken by a minibus to Volivoli in Rakiraki where I was going to do my PADI dive certification. The drive took a little over two hours and the bus was hot and sweaty, but it was preferable to taking two public buses which was the other way of getting there! The resort was amazing. We couldn't believe that we were paying backpacker prices for somewhere with so many facilities looking so good. Our dorm ... read more

After a brilliant trip up the West Coast the plan was to stay in Perth to relax. The best thing about our timing was that our arrival was on Australia Day (a celebration of the day the English arrived in Australia) and Perth was touting the evening's fireworks as the best in the whole of Australia. They started at 8pm, no problem we thought as we landed at 3:30pm. I wanted to get a new camera and we needed booze too. By the time we'd dropped our stuff at the hostel, everywhere had closed apart from a tiny camera shop who were rolling down their shutter at 4:55pm. Ten minutes later with a big mission accomplished smile on my face I left the camera shop, only finding out the next day that I'd been totally ripped ... read more

After two nights in Perth (time to try and wash out all the red dirt from our clothes) our next adventure was up the West Coast to a place called Exmouth. Didn't start too well with us waiting to be picked up outside the hostel. After 20 minutes we were thinking the tour had been cancelled. However, just whilst we running through our options to get up the coast the bus pulled round the corner. We were pleasantly surprised with this off-roading Isuzu 4wd bus that had pulled up, it looked much better than the bus we'd had in the red centre. Shouldn't really have gotten too comfy as that was actually only the shuttle bus to the depot and ten minutes later we were boarding a bus just the same as the red centre one. ... read more

Just had the best three days in the Red Centre. The scenery is amazing and the trip was hard work, but so enjoyable! My friend Andrew finally flew in from Hong Kong after a two day delay (due to the snow at home in London, couldn't be further from the weather here!) Me and Siobhan packed up our apartment we departed Melbourne for Alice Springs, a small town in the middle of Australia. The aboriginal locals sit out and about everywhere in any shady area. There's a stark contrast between the aboriginals and the tourists. I think homelessness must be a big problem and the community as a whole probably has bigger problems, but the people hanging around everywhere with dirty clothes and smelling of body odour did make me feel a little uneasy. I wouldn't ... read more

I can't believe that we're now in 2010! The time is just going so fast! Had a brilliant Christmas! Started the morning by popping a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the occasion and then opened up various presents that me and Siobhan had bought each other and the ones that mum and dad had shipped over. Sian and Dave, a couple we know from Brisbane, had driven down from Brisbane to spend Christmas with us, which was lovely. Quite an undertaking considering that it took around 23 hours of solid tag team driving for them to get here - rather them than me! We had Irish Heather (who works with Siobhan) and Sean her fiance and Canadian Jess to share our orphan Christmas (that's what the Aussies call our traveller Christmas!) We all went down to ... read more

Just woke up and decided to write a bit seeing as I actually got out of Melbourne for a day yesterday. Me and Jess (a friend I met in Byron Bay) took a tour down the Great Ocean Road. It was brilliant, really scenic. It's amazing how long the drive is and how long we actually took to do it. The tour started at 7:30am and ended at 9:30pm! We started off at the famous Bells Beach which is where the surf brand 'Ripcurl' was made. This part of the coast is where all the surf competitions are held, which was pretty cool to see, although the waves were intense! Then we hit the Great Ocean Road, not before a photo opportunity in front of the memorial at the start, although whole road is actually a ... read more

Me and Siobhan have moved into an apartment! We're sharing a one bedroom studio which is two minutes from the beach. It's great to finally get full nights of sleep. The hostel life is brilliant for meeting people, but when you're sharing a room with seven others, the only way to guarantee a full night of sleep was to get blind drunk - not good for the bank balance or the the liver! This was difficult too as the hostel we stayed in wouldn't let you drink in your room for some reason. Obviously we disobeyed that rule most days, which meant whenever there was a knock at the door, we'd have to frantically hide all the bottles before one of the bar managers came in to try and encourage us to come to the bar ... read more

Finally arrived Melbourne after a slightly longer than anticipated stopover in Brisbane. We were staying in the Base Central Hostel which was such a fun place to be. We made so many friends that by the time we left, it was like having the leaving party we'd had in England all over again! The reason we stayed was to get a job, but the job I got was short-lived! Telesales - trying to make appointments for government tax incentives. It was the most mundane soul destroying job ever, but the money was pretty good and the people in the office were mainly travellers. We were allowed to come in wearing shorts, tshirts and flip flops! I would do between 200-300 calls in each five hour shift, to which most people would be “not interested”, some would ... read more

Hello from Brisbane! We finally finished our ten days in a campervan. I tried to update on the way, but somehow managed to delete the post before it was published - argh! Had a brilliant time driving up the east coast. Sleeping was tight, but we managed ok - they really should use the word campervan loosely, it's really just a Hiace van with a mattress in the back! We went through Port Stephen's (Nelson Bay) and Port Macquarie (both FREEZING cold, it felt like we were camping on the east coast of England!) It got warmer in Yamba, a small but lovely town where we booked into a camp site (the other two nights we were in beach car parks, stealing showers from local campsites and having midnight wees in the bushes!) Next on the ... read more
