Road Trip Through USA.

North America » United States July 24th 2009

Leaving Louisville, we headed towards Cincinnati, OH (not stopping at the distillery as planned giving they were all out of the way and...oh yes, we had another late start!)...When we entered the state, the usual signs for the Visitors Center were not posted, nor did we have any information for the city given we had thrown out OH Triple A books out after leaving the State on the way out West..thinking we would be heading a different way back. So, our first though once we arrived in the city was to find a guide to get us around...we went to city hall, a random Kroger building that we were directed to (Kroger is apparently this big supermarket/everything-you-need chain around that area), and finished with the library where we received information and a map for all of ... read more

After…yes, you guessed it, another late start…we set out to see the Nashville sites. First, we decided to stop at the Pancake Pantry (there is a theme here regarding the need to check out all the best food places) where our book described orange lemon and apricot walnut pancakes….When we arrived (on a Tuesday) there was a line all the way out the door and around the corner. Though we were last, we lucked out because a number of groups were there...the server came out after we had been waiting about 3 minutes to ask for a seating of 1 or 2 and we skipped the whole line to be seated. The meal was awesome…sweet potato pancakes, sausage, homefries and pancakes stuffed with cottage cheese with cinnamon syrup. We packed up what we didn’t finish to ... read more

*This one is a little late...Katy was paranoid about posting the Graceland photos bc of copyright issues....if you want to see those..just ask one of us:) *Leaving Shreveport, we began our drive towards Memphis. We stopped, first, in Little Rock Arkansas to see where Bill Clinton was formerly governor. Apparently, Little Rock is in the top five of highest crime cities in the USA, but we ended up in an alright part of town. We put a a pizza place we read about in our roadtripping book in the gps and ended up in a dive bar/pizza place that was being torn down in some areas from what looks like an asbestos clean up. We ordered spinach dip as an appetizer at our waiter's suggestion of it being homemade each day...and it was amazing. Then we ... read more

Given our late start out of Albuquerque, we decided to drive straight on through towards Dallas. We stopped once in Amarillo, TX to get some food and fill up on gas, eating at Dyer's BBQ. Award-winning and featured in our book the place was a real disappointment...Can ordered steak, which was quite delicious, but Katy's whole plate of ribs came out cold and was less than delicious..reminding us why Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY won best BBQ in the US. *We took a route not often traveled by road-trippers, which meant we saw a whole lot of nothing except really small towns. The sun went down as we were driving, and given the flatness of the land...the site was unbelievable, and the best we had seen yet. Otherwise, we grew tired of the numerous Christian stations, ... read more

We decided to take the Hoover Dam route outside of the Vegas towards the Grand Canyon, in order to save time. This meant we would probably not make it to Zion national Park of Bryce Canyon. After a quick stop at the Hoover Dam for a few photos and to snap the Welcome to Arizona sign, we continued onward to the Grand Canyon, stopping once in Kingman on Route 66 to have lunch at Mr. D'z Diner. We arrived around 19:00 and after driving around for a bit and taking a few photos of the Canyon, decided to head towards a campground that we had read about in our book in the National Forest (as all the Canyon campsites were full). On the way we passed Grandview Point and decided to stop, realizing once we arrived ... read more

On our way to Las Vegas from Orange County, we stopped for gas at a strip outlet mall still inside California, and decided to check out a couple of stores while also looking for Internet connection. We stayed for about an hour and found a connection, allowing us to a book a 5 star hotel over Hotwire for a good deal in Vegas. Once booked, we found out we would be staying at the Trump Hotel and decided to drive straight there to get settled. *Upon arriving, we were thrilled to see our suite, a condo with its own kitchen and even a tv in the mirror bathroom. We decided to order some Thai food and stay in, only leaving for about an hour to view some of the sites on the strip, but realizing once ... read more

From Santa Barbara, we headed straight for Beverley Hills to go to a party of a friend of Katy's. We ended up in one of the poshest areas of the city for our first few hours. We stayed at the pool/bbq party for most of the afternoon, taking the time to relax and enjoy our surroundings. While there, we met a group of guys living in West Hollywood having a party later that night. They invited us to come, but we still did not figure out where we are staying that night....telling them this, they offered their couch. A couple hours later we were there, waking up the next morning to find a parking ticket on our car. We didnt take any pictures the first day. *We decided to have breakfast in West Hollywood, at a ... read more

We drove straight through the rest of Arizona, though our route brought us to the National Petrified Forest. Given we had bought the "America the Beautiful Pass," an 80 dollar one year pass that gets you into all the National Parks and Forests, we wanted to get the bang for our buck. We drove in and did the top loop, luckily coming in towards the top and hitting the sites our book described as the most picturesque. After the loop, we came out the same way we had come in and continued our drive, straight on to Albuquerque. We had called a hostel from our book on the way to book, but upon arriving realized the city was extremely inexpensive. After checking out the hostel and small room, we decided to look around more and stayed ... read more

We checked out of our hostel by the 11am checkout and then took on SF, with Katy jampacking another day to make sure Can saw most of her favorite city :). We started out by walking along the piers in the opposite direction of the day before, heading towards Giants stadium. We bought sandwiches at the Ferry Building, took a couple photos, and then continued for another 10 minutes or so before turning back towards the car, stopping to get a California sushi roll at a lunch place across from the Ferry Building first. Then, we got in the car to do a quick tour of the famous Lombard Street ("Crookedest street in the world") where Can exclaimed...yea, great, all the roads in Turkey are like this, and then the Victorian houses, were we secured another ... read more

We decided to go to Sonoma County, as people tend to say Napa is more overpriced and Sonoma is just as picturesque. We stopped at one winery on our way into central Sonoma. They were a newish winery, only 3 years old or so and really friendly. Our pourer explained everything about what we were tasting. We then headed into main Sonoma to pick up a winery map, I love Sonoma stickers, and get some ideas of where to go. The woman at the info center recommended two free wineries near Viansa, an Italian winery Katy is mildly obsessed with. We set off, did tasting for the next few hours with only half a chai latte from Reno in our stomachs. We bought one bottle of red from Viansa with the idea of drinking it that ... read more
