Bıg day for me today. Was planning on doıng something I had been waıtıng to do my entıre trıp. Rent a scooter and drıve ıt along the Italıan coast. The Amalfi Coast to be specıfıc. (thıs turkısh keyboard ıs wreakıng havoc wıth my i letters sorry) I ended up goıng wıth thıs Italıan guy ın my room sınce he had been plannıng doıng somethıng sımılar and we both wanted to check out Positano. Ended up workıng out real well sınce he comes down to thıs area once a year so he knows the area, the language and also how to rıde one of these things. Plus hıs name ıs Geronımo whıch ıs fantastıc. Got our scooter around noon, splıttıng one to save on the cost. Hopped on back and we were off....for about 5 mınutes before ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Sorrento August 11th 2010

The hostel I am in is actually about a 30 minute walk from downtown Sorrento, not that there is much of a downtown. The coast is home to a bunch of small towns here that just kind of flow together. Walked over to Sorrento to start off my day. It's kind of what I expected. Pretty little town situated right on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples. From my understanding it's not the most spectacular town on the Amalfi Coast nor the most beautiful but it's a good base. And if this is as bad as it gets then I am pretty excited to see the rest. I had wanted to go to the beach after walking around town for a bit but it's no easy task because of the cliffs. Most of the town ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split August 10th 2010

Its been a while since a two day blog, about 89 days or so. Just like that day I have little to write about except for traveling. I should have just called this blog Planes, Trains and Automobiles but I liked using my terrible pun in the title instead. Of course, I did not fly for this trip. I replaced that mode of transit with a ferry. Started my day (Aug. 8) in Sarajevo and took a late morning bus down to Split. A journey that looks like it should take only about 3 or 4 hours on a map but which takes about 7 or 8 in reality. The problem is that these two countries (BiH & Croatia) pretty much have no highways so its winding local roads the whole way on the trip. Plus ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo August 7th 2010

Started off the day with a leisurely stroll around the Turkish quarter once again before heading a little east into Novo Sarajevo (New Sarajevo) for a look around. Had to see my new passion, Eastern Bloc architecture. Also, had to pick up a few things for the rest of my trip (headphones & batteries) and it had a few electronic stores with cheap goods so that was nice. Had some more burek for lunch. Got a combination of spinach, potato and meat. They asked if I wanted yogurt with it and I figured they meant it as a sauce so I said yes. Then they bring out a full glass of yogurt and I was just perplexed. Wasn't sure if I was meant to drink it or pour it clumsily out of the glass onto my ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo August 6th 2010

Took the 8am train ride up to Sarajevo. Only cost 5 euro, so cheap for a train. The scenery was amazing, reminded me of Switzerland. Except it was almost like I was in the past century. Saw tons of little cottages up in the hill, barns with thatched roofs and people herding sheep. Had a great time sticking my head out the window of the stuffy train letting the rain cool me off. The three hours flew by and soon I was checking into my hostel/guest house. Great little place run by a few locals who go out of their way to help you enjoy your time in Sarajevo. Feels more like staying in someones house than a hostel. Soon after getting organized I was out the door with a few British girls to check out ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » South » Mostar August 5th 2010

Caught a ride over to the Old Town early this morning on Gogy's trip to work. This would give me the full day to explore the town plus I have no idea where his place is in relation to downtown so the ride helped greatly. Went and checked out the Stari Most (Old Bridge) as I was nearby already. It's easily the number one attraction here. The original bridge was built in the 15th century I think but of course it was destroyed during the war. It's really so simple but something about it just makes it stand out. The setting is great too with a few mosques in the background with the nearby fountains that surround the town as the final backdrop. Walked along the river a bit until I ran into this Muslim cemetery ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » South » Mostar August 5th 2010

Had a pretty lazy morning here at Villa Valjalo. Ate a quiet breakfast out on the patio before heading to the local internet cafe to bang out a few blogs as I often do at the end of my stay in a city. My bus to Mostar did not leave till 5pm tonight so I had most of the afternoon to just relax in Dubrovnik, or I should say in Lapad since I didnt make it too far. Mostly just layed out by the pool and read and took care of a few organizational details for the next part of my trip. Fortunately, there were some others from the hostel off to slow starts so I had some company up at the pool which was nice. Just sat around and enjoyed each others company in the ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik August 4th 2010

Spent the morning here getting organized for the next part of my trip. Walked down to the bus station to get my bus ticket up to Mostar for the following day and then walked over to the Jadronlinija ferry offices at the port to book a ferry ticket back to Italy the night of the 8th. From there I'll just train it back across Italy to Sorrento. There is this island called Lokrum that sits just off the coast near the Old Town here. Apparently it's a pretty popular place to spend a day in the summer with nice beaches, soccer fields, cafes, lounge areas, good hiking, etc. You can take a ferry out there but I decided to rent a kayak and make my way over there myself and it was well worth it. Did ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik August 4th 2010

Got off to a slow start this morning and after lounging around on the patio a group of four of us walked over to the local beach. Had the two English guys (Anthony & Jaime) and the Dutch guy I met yesterday (Sonders). Stopped at this little crepe place on the say and had the most amaying crepe for breakfast/lunch. It was filled with cold vanilla ice cream, the perfect contrast to the freshly made crepe. Most of the beaches here just consist of small rocks and no sand but we got used to it pretty quick. Had a nice relaxing afternoon on the crowded beach before heading over to a nearby cafe for a late lunch. I had heard there were a bunch of places along the coastline here where you can find a small ... read more
