What is the primary religion in Finland, and what role does the church play in their lives? In Finland most are members of the main state church, the Lutheran Church of Finland. As of 2011 about 77% of the population belonged to it. Since 1923 Finland has had the freedom of religion and although its an obligated school subject, most Finnish people decide not to actively practice religion. The state church plays is important to most Finns including those not religious. It was a way of life, they were baptized, married and buried with church rites. An important ceremony for adolescence was confirmation, it was used to signify them becoming closer to being adults. For Finns abandoning their church would be to break from family and community traditions, and also free themselves of a church tax.
