Some of the photos are of the insertion of poles through body piercings. This self mutilation is performed to demonstrate strength and to ward off bad omens. Businesses pay lots of money to have these men parade through the street. This action blesses the business for the coming year.

As most of you know, I am living and teaching English in Taiwan. Wanting so much to share my time here with you, I decided to set up this blog where you can peruse at your leisure:)
My time in Taiwan has been splendid to say the least.
I do have to add that moving to Kaohsiung was not the best choice. Health-wise that is. The air pollution on this side of the island is terrible. I have had a cough on and off for about 3 months. But work here is stable, unlike Taitung and that is why I moved from the east coast to the west.
