Last night was a great night. Danielle and I went out with some other people since we didnt have class today and we ended up in Mendaur aka "the black hole." We call it the black hole because it is the biggest touristy bar and for some reason we all find ourselves like sucked there at some point in the night. Well we are at Mendaur hanging out with everyone when Danielle's intercambio, Oier, calls her and wants to meet up. She is already really drunk and i dont want to necessarily leave her alone to wander and find her intercambio so i decide to go with her and kind of just keep an eye on her. We go meet up with Oier and his friend Iker at another bar and they end up showing us ... read more

Well today is Dia de Todos Los Santos or All Saints' Day but it's not as big here as it is in Mexico. The locals do go to the cemeteries and put flowers on the graves but there is no like big fiestas or anything like in Mexico. Also, everything is closed on All Saints Day including grocery stores. However, its a sunday as well and everything is always closed on sundays here, so its not too different then normal. There are also traditional sweets that they eat on All Saints' Day called Huesos de Santo (literally "saints bones"). These are cylindrical treats, made of marzipan, and filled with a custard made of egg yolk. They also sometimes come with chocolate filling although traditionally they were just the egg custard filling. They really do look like ... read more

Today was a very exciting day for me and i am so proud of myself! (I know im a nerd) But i just had my first real full conversation in spanish about a topic that i never thought i would be able to talk about with someone...computers. Heck, I cant even talk about computers in english lol. So I was sitting in the park getting internet so that i could do some research for my next presentation when a man on a bike rides up and asks me something in spanish. I didnt understand him the first time because i didnt totally realize that he was talking to me and stuff so i asked him to repeat himself and he asked me if i spoke castiliano, which is spanish in spain. I replied that i did ... read more

Today we had our first excursion with the whole USAC group and it was a really cool trip. We left at like 8:30 in the morning and drove across the border into the French Basque area where we took like a cable car / train thing to the top of one of the pyrenees mountains. It was chilly but the view was absolutely amazing and there were horses and cattle just roaming around randomly which were fun to pet and stuff. We then left that area and went to a place and took a hike across the French border back into Spain and to the basque village of Zugarramurdi where we ate lunch at this restaurant. The food was amazing! We had lamb chops and salad with bread and then gelato for dessert. It was absolutely ... read more

I was sitting in the park today getting internet and i saw two things that i wanted to share. The first thing that i saw happened while i was skyping with my mom and we were talking when all of the sudden this huge group of girls comes running through the park in their bathrobes with towels in their hair while holding hair brushes and hair dryers and they were singing something that i couldnt make out since there were so many of them singing out of sync. But they would circle up like a gang around any male of any age that they saw and they would sing a song to him and then run off to the next males that they saw. It was the weirdest most random thing that i think i have ... read more

Today was a full fun-filled day. Meghan, Laura, Erin, Mia, and me decided to get up and walk part of the Camino de Santiago to a small town named Orio. It was over a ten mile hike to get there from San Sebastian. The Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. Santiago) is a pilgramage that for hundreds of years Christians have hiked to get to the Cathedral of Santiago Compostela in Galicia in Northwestern Spain. According to tradition, this is where the remains of the apostle St. James are buried. The Camino de Santiago has many routes, most from France through Northern Spain. However, technically any trail that leads to the Cathedral of Santiago Compostela is a route and thus part of the walk. Today many people walk the Camino de Santiago for non-religious reasons ... read more

Well I think i jinxed myself last week when i said that the weather was beautiful and that i hoped it wouldnt start raining because for the past 4 days it has done nothing but pour. I have decided to ride the bus when it rains outside even though it costs a euro thirty to ride it each time which i think is a little ridiculous. To go to and from class it costs me 2.60 euro. That is like 5 american dollars just to ride the bus to and from school! (Yes, the american dollar right now sucks and is at an exchange rate of like 1.56 to the euro. It sucks.) The only other option is taxis which are even more expensive than the buses or to ride a bike, but no one does ... read more

So it's been a pretty uneventful weekend this weekend. We didn't go anywhere or do anything super exciting, but we did go out to Parte Vieja and hang out at night and of course we also did group breakfast at Kayla and Danielles on Saturday morning. Last night was a really fun night though. We went out to the Parte Vieja and we went to this bar called Tas Tas which we normally avoid like the plague since its like a "travelers bar" and the only people there really are english speaking people and we like to go to real basque bars. But we went there because they had a cheap drink special going on where you got two beers for 3 euro, which is extra cheap. Normally, a beer costs about 2.50 - 3 euros ... read more

This week has been pretty boring. They normally are during the weeks since really all i can do is go to class and do homework. My class is getting a little frustrating for me. First off we have this girl in our class who speaks like fluent spanish because she has grown up with a dad who is Mexican and she talks in spanish to him all of the time. This is really frustrating because all of the teachers expect us to be like kayla and they cut us off when we are trying to speak and will ask kayla to say it correctly. Plus, she sets the grading scale and of course none of us are as good at spanish as her so we can never get A's. We are all convinced that she should ... read more

Wow what an amazing and eventful weekend! I dont even know where to start! We decided to go to Barcelona this past weekend and it was absolutely amazing. We left on friday around 3:30 and it took a seven hour bus ride to get there. Mia and me took a cab to our hostel, (the other people with us said they had wanted to sleep in a park) and !hen we arrived, we checked into the hostel, and found out we were sharing a room with twelve German men! They were all having a huge party in our room when we got there, so we put our stuff down, and went to go meet up with the rest of the group. They were very nice but its a little nerveracking staying in a room with twelve ... read more
