We awoke to another fine warm day although a little breezy. The weathermen are forecasting rain tomorrow from a low off the Carolina coast but we will head further inland then so maybe it won't be too bad for sightseeing in the open. While we have a big unit at the Super 8 the place was really tired and even though we intend to stay in Williamsburg for another night we will hunt out another motel for tonight. We are now well aware of watching out for things when you enter a recption area and the smell as well.It turned out the Indian lady on the front desk slept in a unit attached to the office and obviously lived all her life in that one room so smells will out......... We headed off for Jamestowne(the Nat Parks site ... read more

Planned another easy day today so late start for a simple breakfast on offer at the Super 8 at Virginia Beach. After watching Regis and Kelly,a show you can get hooked on just to see who they are going to have on and what they are going to talk about,it was time to hit the road.By the way they interviewed the delicious Diane Lane who is starring opposite Richard Gere in Nights at Rodanthe which opens here soon.Must put it on the list as it looks a good movie. The GMA show interviewed Richard Gere beforehand. Headed down to Fort Story where the first English settlement in USA was.Pulled up tot the entry only to find we and the car would be subject to a full searchas we were entering a military base.Hadnt taken that into account when ... read more

We had planned a quiet day today and so slept in a bit and had a later breakfast at our overnight stay in Emporia,VA. The weather was still dry and mild but more overcast than we had seen previously. Spent some time getting video onto our external hard drive we are carrying so we have a backup just in case something happens to the video hard drive.Have finally worked out the quickest method of doing it which has meant converting the files so we can download them. The extra time before departure meant Getchen could do her exercises and watch Regis and Kelly. We headed off into Emporia looking for a plantaton mansion that featured in the Civil War in a small way.We found that it was not generally open to the public but by chance ... read more

It took us a while to adjust to the fact that we had moved our clock forward 3 hours and so when we arrived at our Microtel last night at 11.30pm it felt like only 8.30pm so it wasnt out of orde to still be wide awake and watching TV nearly 2 hours later.Eventually sleep arrived and we had a great nights rest and ready for the next leg of this trip. Took our time this morning and did some administration before heading off to the airport in the courtesay van to pick up our Dollar car. The nice AfroAmerican man behind the counter tried to do a Joyce on us(the SanFran salesperson) and get us to upgrade "cos the car wouldnt be big enough for us".He pointed in the general direction of the cars parked ... read more

We arose early with expectations of a short drive to San Fran to return the rental car and board our flight to Raleigh-Durham.Theyanks pronounce Raleigh different to us and they have ifficulty understanding where we are heading for.So we thought we better change but it is a bit tricky when you are used to speaking in a certain way. We were one of the first down for breakfast and I am pleased to say that waffles were back on the menu again, yippee.Gretchen managaed to burn the one side of her toast that toasted.Somehow the toaster element was only working on one side. The smoke sent the front desk man running to open the front doors and let the smoke out.!!! We had successfully got ourselves back to one suitcase and backpack each which was amazing cos when ... read more

After a night from hell in the Fallon Lodge and Inn unit we arose to prepare for the day to journey down from altitude to close to sea level. The overnight motel was a shocker. It was dirty and we should have moved on.The only thing going for it was the high powered shower which at least when you got under it made you feel a little cleaner.I suppose the first sight of the motel proprietors stained shirt should have told us something. The bed was comfortable and so were the pillows as long as you didnt look too close. No obvious cooties !!! Anyway we survived and made a homemade breakfast with coffee from the motel reception and we were on our way to get our final stamp of riding the Lonliest Road in America at Fernley about ... read more

You guessed it the fine sunny weather continued today. We have been so fortunate with the weather considering hurricanes and rain in the south and east over the past 3 weeks.Just hope that as we come to the end of the western section of our trip that the weather doesnt perform as well as we head east on Saturday. We had a "homemade"breakfast and Gretchen thought it would be nice to have it in bed watching GMA doing 50 states in 50 days( a bit like us !!) We headed off to try and find the railway station to see if the steam engine that works the Ghost Railway in Ely was out in the open although it wasnt due to operate today.Well we searched but couldnt find the station in this town of 4ooo odd people ... read more

Anoher great nights sleep, must be because we are fitting so much into our day, and the sun coming up over the mountains in Vegas was quite something to behold.Decided to try IHOP (International House lof Pancakes) for breakfast and their closest restaurant was right next door. The menu seemed to have pancakes with everything when we just wanted bacon and eggs. After searching thru the menu for a few minutes Gretchen spotted what we wanted and it was time to order.Thought we were in for a cheap breakfast but by the time the coffee, juice and fruit bowl was added it was more like.......Odd that the senior price(over 55 yrs and we qualified !!) for what we had would have been more expensive and the servings would have been smaller. Can't figure that one out.Perhaps we needed to read ... read more

It was another earlier start in glorious fine weather again.Breakfast was fairly limited at the motel but we filled up best we could ready for the long day.Gretchen had been out for a long walk to try and keep her exercised condition cos I think she thinks she is losing it.!!! She discovered Twisters Soda Fountain a real old time Soda Fountain shop with Coca Cola everything in it.There were even a six pack bottles of Coke selling for $150 !!!!!The seats at the Soda Fountain had CocaCola embossed on the back,Leigh you would have been in 7th heaven here.A really cool place. This weather just keeps on shining for us as the sky was again fine and cloudless whenwe started our day in Hurricane.Had to share the dining area at Dayss Inn with a small busload of Japanese. Not sure where they had come from or where they were bound for but they didnt know how to make waffles and stuffed the machine up so had to be content with cereal and toast. No butter so used this spray on stuff that comes in a bottle. We had seen it i n a supermarket and had thought about buying it but had decided against it.You can spread your butter right to the corners which suits me down to a tee!! We had had a great nights sleep again and so ready for what would work out to be a long day. ... read more
