Saturday 23rd May On to St Petersburg by Train #24 “The Younst” Dawn revealed a rather overcast grey sky with light rain.Looking out the window at the deserted childrens playground and walkways one can imagine what the place would be like in the winter when people would be kept inside by the ground covered in snow. The surrounding buildings in their drab colours certainly don’t liven the view up under overcast skies. We got ready for departure in a leisurely fashion aware that because we had to leave the keys in the flat when we left that there would be no coming back if we remembered that we had left something behind when we got halfway to the subway!! We planned a 10am departure and made that time comfortably. This should give us plenty of time to make ... read more

Friday 22nd May Into the Kremlin The plan today was to visit the inside of the Kremlin and we had all day to do it. We started out first though with a dry run to link the subway to Leningrad Station where the train for St Petersburg will depart from tomorrow. On the way into town we actually got some life out of a fellow passenger and it was the first and only time someone actually acknowledged we were there on the train. We were both standing and a seat came free behind Gretchen.A woman tapped Gretchen on the shoulder and indicated the spare seat with a sort of a grunt. They aren’t all zombies after all !!! Subway director Gretchen had it all worked out and sure enough after popping up from underground it only took a ... read more

Thursday 21st May We visit Lenin’s Tomb and two hours to cash a travellers cheque!! When you are on an adventure such as ours,199 days away from home on foreign soil, there are incidents that happen every day that you wouldn’t experience in the same way you would at home because of the different environment you are in.Of those things that happen there is almost always at one that stands out and will probably stick in the memory forever.Today was to be no exception!! The morning dawned again fine and clear with the cool spring nip that has been each day since we arrived in Moscow.Of course the sun was up a long time before we were as it rises around 5.30am. Our plan today was to return to Red Square and visit Lenins Tomb,a must for ... read more

Wednesday 20th May A taste of Red Square One of the benefits of living like a Muscovite in a suburban apartment is that there is virtually no traffic noise.Building number 7 that the hostel is in on Belorechevskaya Street is not really on the street.Rather it is amongst other apartment buildings 100mtrs back from the road. You can hear a very low hum from traffic somewhere in the distance but it does mean that if you are used to waking to the increase in daily traffic noise as the day starts then that won’t be of any use to you here. And so it was that 8.30am again had come around before we stirred to another fine day overhead.By this hour the sun had already been up nearly 3 hours but the dark red curtains had kept ... read more

Tuesday 19th May Moscow Metro Mastered and McDonalds to the Rescue Thank goodness the curtains in our bedroom at the Happy Home Hostel are dark red and hold the light out pretty well as we slept until 8.30am before either of us stirred. The shower on the wall was delightful and the water pressure was strong and water hot. We were ready for a good breakfast and then to find the office where our train tickets to St Petersburg were being held for us.We had decided riding the subway and changing lines a couple of times would help us come to grips with the biggest subway in the world. So late morning we set off with the stations we needed to transfer and the station where the office for the train tickets would be at marked ... read more

Monday 18th May Welcome to Moscow, comrade!! The crowd in the departure lounge slowly built in numbers as the departure time came near. This flight was only 4 hours and we wondered how we were going to cope with little sleep and arrival into a VERY foreign country for us.Time would tell. For this flight we had an older but comfortable Airbus. The captain was a woman with a precise English voice rather out of place with the majority of passengers who looked rather Russian. She gave us the flight time and told us the weather was expected to be a little misty and 5C on arrival into Moscow at 5.30am their time!!!This is COLDER than home in the middle of winter we thought!!! More drinks and food meant little sleep which we thought would be a concern if we ... read more

Sunday 17th May Farewell Cairo and off into the real unknown With no plans for any extensive sightseeing today because our car for the airport was to pick us up at 1pm,we lay in bed a bit longer enjoying the ETV,Letterman Show and CBS news. All very much like home in an odd sort of way!! After breakfast we caught up on the email and internet and reconfirmed that the car was arranged. We thought this wise given the car didn’t turn up at the airport as we had arranged. We knew we would have at least 4 hours up our sleeve to arrange some other form of transport to the airport in need. It was another fine day and even at 11am the sun was quite fierce as we headed out to the bazaar to see if I ... read more

Saturday 16th May Golf Croquet in Cairo...well almost We felt more confident about our third day in Cairo after the successful day yesterday and our trip to the pyramids. A wedding down the road from the hotel continued until around 3am in the morning so a restful sleep wasn’t on the chart for Gretchen although it didn’t bother me.They certainly know how to celebrate the big events in their lives here. The plan today was to take in the Al Geizera Club situated on a large island in the Nile River and then see what was on offer by way of a boat ride on the Nile itself. We have learnt not to try and fit too much into a day due to the time it has taken us to get downtown and the heat that while ... read more

Friday 15th May The Pyramids....The Sphinx...and two very large cold beers each Man, are we enjoying a bathroom with a shower attached to a wall !! The stress of being lost yesterday has diminished and we woke with a new determination not to let the layout of this confused and chaotic city beat us again. The target today after our breakfast on the terrace is to be the Pyramids at Giza which is about 10km away from the downtown area. The hotel had offered us a driver for the day to take us there but the price at EGP250 or approxNZ$70 is not within the Benvie Budget Adventure and anyway a local A/C bus would only be EGP2 each way. So even though the walk into the centre of town yesterday had been a challenge we did ... read more

Thursday 14th May Lost in Cairo At last a city that has got the better of us,for now.More about that later. The beds in our room as the best we have experienced to date.Wide, kingsize singles, and soft and comfortable mattress.Sleep came quickly after our early morning arrival and we didn’t wake until 8am.With breakfast not starting until 8.30am we were able to enjoy taking our time and showering under a shower that is attached to the wall. What bliss!! Breakfast was on the terrace on the roof of the 4 story hotel. As forecast the weather was brilliantly fine but with a warm breeze. We sought a table under an umbrella and dined on roll with butter and jam and coffee. Not as filling as Athens but adequate for now. We decided not to try too much today and just take ... read more
