The weather is improving all the time with the temperature warming up nicely. And it is a great day to stretch the legs again on the dales although this time the other side of the valley from Settle. Arthur is calling by at around 9.30 to pick us up but first we have time for the Tuesday Settle market.Time enough to buy another black pudding although this time I will be a bit more sparing in my breakfast to make it last longer. And I couldn't go past the sausages made from pork with black pud and apple for my dinner tonight.Gretchen visited the fish merchant again but went this time for a fillet of turbott which is a fish she had not tried before. With the larder full we didnt need anything else and lunch out was ... read more

When you are away from home and travelling as long as we are you need a day or two here away from sightseeing and doing what you would do at home....administration and housework. So today was designated administration day for catching up on emails, blog, banking etc etc etc. We also got a bit of junk TV watching in as well with an episode of the Jeremy Kyle Show.It amazes us how the people on this programme bare their lives warts and all to the world. We have at times thought that it is all scripted and the people on the stage are actors because some of the situations are so farfetched. We actually had to think about what to have for lunch today as we had planned to stay in and so late morning took a stroll down ... read more

Today dawned brighter than we have seen for the past few days and prospects of a dry day for our trip to Liverpool seemed OK. Outside there is the usual Sunday activity with people with ricksacks on milling about the town getting ready to head off on the large number of hiking options that you can do from the town or nearby. With another hearty breakfast inside us we headed off with a plan to take a direct route there so we had as much time in the city to do what we want and then meander home via some lesser country roads and take in the countryside. Traffic into Settle was pretty much non stop and one thing we have become quickly aware of is how some oncoming cars cut the corners especially on rises ... read more

The weather is giving that impression of improving more each day.Its not that it has been wet, apart from our day in York, but just that it feels it is starting to warm up a little. Skipton, which is the largest town,in the immediate area and about 12 miles from Settle reportedly has the biggest and most diverse market in the North Yorkshire Dales so we thought we had better look it over. As expected the town was busy with both cars finding parking space and people wandering the area close to the main street where the market was set up. All you had to do was follow the Saturday morning crowd and you would find the main street and marketplace. The stalls were set up both sides of the main street and offered a wide range of goods ... read more

Friday 19th June Another walk on the Dales The weather has improved a little today from yesterday and so has my cold.Mind you being out in that chilling wind would have cleared the worst sinus or head cold!!! With the black pudding and bacon from Tuesday market finished it was back to scrambled egg today.Heres hoping the Skipton market which we plan to go tomorrow has black pudding on offer somewhere. Cousin Iain and his wife Chris called for us around 10am and we drove off in their Renault Clio to Malham via a rather windy and narrow road to Malham from where we would start our walk on the dales. The weather was actually quite good for walking as the wind from the past couple of days had died away and although it was overcast ... read more

Thursday 18th June A Walk on the Dales The day started out a little brighter than yesterday or at least the rain had gone. The temperature was still cool though and even down in the protected valley that Settle was in there was a good northerly breeze. After our day out yesterday we decided that this morning we would catch up on some washing and do some housework. After we had been down to Booths to get some supplies in and buy something for dinner we called in at the local tourist information office in the town hall building to see if they had a brochure on walks around the southern section of the Settle to Carlisle railway line.We already had the brochure on the northern section of the line and it had said that there was ... read more

It had to happen. The dry weather had to break. And today it has!! Well actually its not that bad just a little light rain and its not going to stop us taking a road trip to York a city we have heard so much about for its style. With all the goodies we brought at the market day yesterday we could hardly not have a full English and so it was,Eggs, bacon, black pud etc etc.We left on the road so full we didn't think we would need any lunch. We took the A65 to just outside Skipton and then switched the A59 where the rain actually sopped. We had thoughts about visiting Bolton Abbey but decided that we would be best to make the most of getting to York as soon as we could and hopefully before the rain ... read more

The late night of Sunday has seemed to work on me sleeping in later, well at least another hour and I am not tempted to turn on the TV news and breakfast programme until after 6am!!much to Gretchens delight. Today is market day in Settle. The town was granted a charter in 1249 by Henry III to hold a market each Tuesday and it has done so every Tuesday since. Now I reckon that must be a world record for the most consecutive number of markets days ever and one for the Guiness Book of Records!!! We could see the people setting their stalls up in the market square area from our house but we had to get breakfast finished before going down and browsing what produce etc we would like to buy. The weather remains dry although it ... read more

Well, one good thing that came out of the little medical drama from last night involving Eric, the husband of my cousin Rhona,is that I am now sleeping in after 5am!!!!And Gretchen reckons that that in itself is a great achievement. We were of course late to bed after returning from the hospital with Rhona,Eric and Jean around 1.30am. So it was a very leisurely start to the day as we waited to hear from Eric and Rhona as to how Eric had been during the night and whether they felt comfortable in driving back to Leeds later in the day. Thankfully he was much better when they called around late morning and it was good to see he had his colour back again. He had even had a hearty breakfast. We chatted away again about things in general ... read more

Today is to be another of those special days we have had on this adventure and the opportunity to meet 3 of my cousins all in one day. We had a good nights sleep in our new home for the next 2 weeks and had a leisurely breakfast to be ready to meet up with cousins Rhona and Jean and also Rhonas husband Eric who were travelling up from nearby Leeds to stay the night. There may also be an opportunity to meet cousin Iain and his wife Christine who live just down the road from Settle at Long Preston. We had timed our arrival and stay in Settle just right as Iain and Chris had only just come back from a cruise holiday in Alaska. We wandered around to the Golden Lion Hotel where we had Rhona,Eric ... read more
