If you Google the Restaurant Cotelè (carnes a las brasas) you may get it's history of a sailor who traveled from South Africa through Tierra Del Fuego, on his way to New Zealand. He loved Puerto Montt, Chile - so much, that he never left and set up a restaurant there. Needless to say I have not wanted to eat for the last two days!!! ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Osorno February 7th 2017

Sunday is family outing day, with everyman and his dog, tourists galore, bus loads and cars/autos tail to tail on return from lakes side swims, trekking, picnics, waterfalls and visiting Volcanoes eateries quaint cafes/restaurants and small towns in the surrounds of the massive lake Llanquihue that circumference can take up to four hours to drive around. A whole day trip of all the fascinating things to do and see along the way. This Sunday, was a car trip to the base camp of the volcano Orsono and a climb up to the ski chair lift point and a beautiful visual ride down for me of mountains and the "huge" lake ;)... read more

MISSING February 3rd 2017

Today a treat for the senses, Angelmo, Puerto Montt fish market. I haven't the foggiest about what half these seafood creatures were on offer at the markerts. The place of delivery is at the shoreline behind the scenes. The tides rise 7 meters depending on the season and the moon cycles. And sea lions could be seen at play, possibly getting fat on any free feeds!... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt January 28th 2017

I went to the annual Bierfest, Saturday 21 January, 2017 - of it's 33rd year running. It was a great family day out. With a high German history and population in Chile, Llanquihue, with its beautiful lake and volcano backdrop was full of colour and fun for locals and tourists. I will let the photos tell the story.... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas January 25th 2017

My first driving experience was within five days of arriving into Puerto Varas, with my Uncle who i hung on to every word re driving on the opposite side of the road to Australia.. The problems for me are the busses and trucks that come so close. Roads are very narrow in some parts. Cars cut you off, first in first serve and every street corner (and I mean every street courner in the centre) has zebera crossings, pedestrians have right of way. At peak, two lanes become 4 and you have to negotiate other peoples moves or take a bus which runs every six minutes to the centre of Puerto Montt (next City up from here which feeds in and out heavily daily to the surrounds) or choose to drive between morning 9.30am to 11am ... read more

To enter Chile a non national needs $117 US dollars, you can pay by cash or credit. Nationals are exempt of these fees. Tip 1...never get in a black taxi! if you value your life...airport taxi counter is safe and will cost $20,000 Chilean pesos. Then hang on for the ride!!! three lane highways become five lane highways with no rules...! Tip 2...I recommend Amistar Apartment as in CBD and next to grocery store and ask for a room with a view to Cerro San Cristobal. I wanted to climb to the ruin this morning but I was turned away because I was a woman alone vagabonds and homeless men every where very risky and gangs between12 years and 20 year olds the most dangerous for rape and pillage! A 28 year old man was murdered ... read more
