Well, we finally made it to our restaurant last night by getting off the bus and walking the last quarter mile in the rain. The poor driver took another half hour to get to our destination. Beijing traffic is something else. All of our meals are served family style with the dishes placed on a central lazy Susan. And the dishes keep coming! Here we had about 8 meat and vegetable dishes besides the duck. The Peking Duck itself was good but not as good as Mom's. Yes, my mother-in-law occasionally invests two or three days preparing a duck that comes out sweet, brown, and crispy, so we are spoiled and couldn't quite appreciate the mediocre version. We loved the purple sweet potato moon cake that we had for dessert, though. Tasted like a coconut brownie. ... read more

This morning we had our first Chinese breakfast, and it was quite spectacular. Besides tea, coffee, cereal, milk, and juices, we had baby bok choi, orange and purple sweet potatoes, congee rice (like po rridge), edamame, kimchi, seaweed salad, something like French toast, spring rolls, watermelon, and grapes. We feel surprisingly energetic given the time shift and managed to make our bodies sleep a few hours between 1 and 6 a.m. (p.m. At home). Our first tour destination was Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I always like the first venture out in a country, when everything looks strange and new. Clark and Georgie and Mum kindly brought us to the airport in Portland after lunch at Skipper's in Saco. We turned down the offer of a Chinese buffet at this point. The airport was basically empty - one of the great features of flying from Maine! There were 2 people in the security line ahead of us. Our first leg to Detroit left on time about 4:30 p.m., and leaving from Portland we could see Saco Bay, followed by Lake Winnepesaukee (Moultonborough, Center Harbor, and Meredith) and White River Junction and Dartmouth. It briefly entered my mind to wonder if this was the proverbial "life flashing before my eyes," but it was definitely a pleasant experience. Patches of red announced the beginning of fall. Soon we were in Detroit for a three-hour layover. For our last ... read more

OK, this is definitely not worth your time, let me warn you. I'm new to blogging and giving this a test run while sitting in the Toyota service area having an oil change. Just one of the many fun chores to take care of before we start on our 3-week trip to China. You probably don't need to read about laundry, canceling the paper, holding the mail, cleaning out the fridge and garden, and shopping for gifts... Perhaps the only preparation unique to this trip was our quest for new or new-looking $1 and $5 bills to be used as tips along the way for everyone from tour guides to bus driver to hotel maids. You might think you could just walk into a bank and ask for these. That was true for the fives, but ... read more
