I’m sorry I have not posted anything in a while. Time always goes by so fast for me when I’m in South Africa. There never seems to be enough of it and my stay never seems to be long enough. The other reason I have found it hard to blog about this section of my trip is because I feel like I’m at home when I’m here in Joburg with my family not really traveling - even though I am of course. Plus I have not had internet for a while so I will do my best to get you up to date on the past month without making this too long! And then I have a bunch to tell you about my last 2 weeks out here so I’ll probably post a couple blogs over ... read more

The routine was early morning drives, afternoon swims / naps, and evening drives. Friday started this trend for us, we were up and out of the lodge by 7am. We saw on this day; Wildebeest, Lions(which were being lazy and just lying under a tree), Elephants, Impala, Warthog, White Rhino, Guinea Foul, Kudu and Baboons. The morning drive break was for coffee with Amerula and rusks. Mid-day got to around 112F degrees, Sam and I decided we were going to try and stay up so we went for a swim and then took a shower in our outdoor shower! We however did end up taking naps, being out and about in that heat is really draining. We set off for our evening drive around 4:30, it was still hot as hell out. Aj(our ranger/guide) had ... read more

I got to spend 3 days in Joburg before heading off to Madikwe. We were out in The Bush and I had no internet soooo, I will split them into a couple blogs so it is not too overwhelming! My first couple days here were spent visiting family and friends. We went to see Anton at the factory(“The Factory” as we call it, is a large warehouse filled to the brim with set props for movies. Tots{My Aunt} runs everything there and she has Anton and Orin to help her organize and load and unload orders). We didn’t get to stay long because we were invited over for drinks, to a friend of the family, Marie and Hansie’s house. We met their 2 sons for the first time, JP and Justin. They are all wonderful people. ... read more

I had a hard time deciding on a title for this one... Had such an amazing night followed by a really shitty day of travel. Finally ended up going with the positive :) I think that is the way to always try and go! Thursday Alex and I went out dancing. We headed to Lester Square where there are multiple clubs, bars and so on in the area. We started at a club called Ruby's it was dark, low ceilings, with more of a lounge atmosphere although there was a small dance floor with a few people on it. We had a few drinks and talked with a few people before deciding to move onto the next place. Zoo bar was our next stop. This place had more of the club feel with 3 separate rooms ... read more

I was going to write sooner but it has been a busy week. Halloween was a relaxed day here. There were a few people dressed up but not many. Alex took me to a place called Camden Market. It is actually a little town I believe but on Sundays the streets are lined with venders selling cloths, food, music, jewelry, everything! If you don’t like what the street venders have you can wonder into the shops that also do the vender style of haggling on the prices (only on market day from what I understand). You can find anything and everything all at much lower prices than what you will find in town. We had a late start to the day and spent what was left in Camden. We stopped for a drink in one of ... read more

We got up Wednesday to sunshine and decided to spend a day outside. Alex took me to an area of London that she used to love and went in search of her favorite hangout. We found it, unchanged and just as eclectic as always. Troubadour. A dark entrance with an ornately carved wooden door. I would have walked right past it, luckily Alex knew what we were looking for! I, of course, loved the door and was hoping that the inside would catch the eye just the same. I didn’t know what to expect but I didn’t want to walk into anything new with white table cloths. The first look inside and I was not disappointed! You step up onto an old, rickety seeming, wood floor. We chose a little corner table by the window. The ... read more

My first full day here (Thu) Alex and I walked into Uxbridge. It’s not too far, about a 20 min walk. The weather has been a bit warmer in the day compared to Scotland and so it is actually nice to be outside and walking around! Alex showed me where the train station is, which is also the main bus stop. I got an Oyster card. It is a reloadable travel card and gives me a bit of a discount on the fair compared to paying with cash, and it works for the buses and trains. The other nice thing is that if we do more than 7 pounds 50 worth of travel in 1 day it will not charge us any more than that! Alex and I walked to a restaurant that she used to ... read more

Last few days in Scotland were very cold, but great in the fact that I got to just hang out with Jean most the time and be lazy! Friday night Jean and I went to Ricky and Danny's flat to hang out and have a drink... A drink turned into just less than half a bottle of tequila for me and half a bottle of vodka for Jean. - It’s amazing how much more I can drink being closer to sea level! haha - Anyways Jean and I competed on the Wii for a bit. I won Bowling and Golf, He won Tennis, Boxing, and Baseball. Then we played some video game that was like karaoke, fun for drunk people! Ricky was great, and Danny did good as well, he said that he only did well ... read more

What a week! Monday Jean had school till 1. I walked into town and met him when he was finished. We went for lunch with 2 of his friends to a Chinese buffet restaurant. It was good. Can't say it was any different than what we would get in the States. There were a few different flavors but nothing to scary! After lunch Jean and I split from his friends and walked around town a bit. We came across these trampoline things (like you see at the fairs) that have the bungee cords attached and you can do flips and what not. Anyways, I have always wanted to try one out, and so I did! Jean thought it was really funny and said that they were for kids! Apparently a lot of other people also thought ... read more

Camping... In the Fall... In Scotland.... Most people looked at us like we were crazy, including the park rangers who gave us the map for the hike to our camp. We got up Friday morning to a dark sky, heavy fog and constant drizzle. Only doubting for moment if we should go or not we made some coffee and packed the car. Jean and I went to pick up Jean's friend Jack and we were on our way by noon. It was not a far drive but thanks to the fog and narrow roads it took us quite a while to drive there. What I could see of the passing scenery was stunning. Everything is so beautifully green and the ancient stone walls in the country side were breathtaking. We arrived and paid the rangers 2pounds ... read more
