Monday 27th May: the plan for the day was to drive to the Datca Peninsula south of the major tourist resort of Marmaris as it’s reported as having some of Turkey’s most beautiful coastline. However, on checking the distances involved this would have required at least 2 ½ hours driving each way. And, having assimilated and adopted much of the very relaxed lifestyle of Dalyan, we decided instead to stay here and have another stroll to the Lycian/Roman ruins at Kaunos just across the river. We even had the same boatwoman, Mina, who had ferried us across previously and despite our warm greetings she failed to recognise her former customers: another blow to the self esteem. Halfway to the ruins, after no more than 400 yards, we decided to pause and sample the freshly pressed pomegranate ... read more

Turkey Tour 2013 There’s something about the Turquoise Coast of Turkey that keeps us coming back for more. This time there it was the added attraction of staying in my brother’s Peter’s villa in Dalyan: an area we hadn’t been to before. So, on Thursday 23rd May, courtesy of Thomson Flight TOM 708 from Cardiff to Dalaman we arrived back in Turkey at 9pm to be met at the airport by Pete and Margaret who had kindly offered to guide us in our hire car from Dalaman Airport to the Chateau Pete (more properly known the Villa Limon) in Dalayan. On arrival at Dalaman Airport I discovered that I’d booked the hire car from 24th May not the 23rd but Pete came to the rescue and called the car rental agency who agreed to provide us ... read more

Friday 15thFebruary: The good ship SS Norwegian Star docked at Cozumel early in the morning but we didn’t leave the ship until 12.30 pm…….. another excuse to load up on the excellent onboard food. When we did disembark we only had to walk 200 yards to our ferry to the mainland which then took 40 minutes to get to Playa del Carmen, the town close to our hotel. The Virgin Holidays organisation was super efficient for the entire transfer from ship to hotel and when we got back to the Occidental Grand Flamenco we found that our request for a room with a sea view had been fulfilled and our new room a big improvement on the previous one. Then it was back to our familiar routine of strolling down to the beach for a lounge ... read more

Thursday 14thFebruary: Roatan, Honduras. We sailed into Coxen Hole Roatan just after daybreak after an overnight journey directly east from Belize City, and it was very nice to see green hills again after the totally flat scenery of Mexico, Louisiana and Belize. Roatan is a small island with an interesting history having been under British rule/occupation before it was exchanged for Belize. Consequently, many of the communities still have English names e.g. Coxen Hole is named after a 16th Century English pirate John Coxen. Henry Morgan and Edward Teach (Blackbeard) also based themselves in Roatan at various times. It’s very small, only 20 miles long and on average a mile wide. After docking we walked off the ship to see how much the taxis would charge to take us to a resort in the north of ... read more

Monday 11thFebruary: at sea en route from New Orleans to Costa Maya, Mexico Heading due south in quite rough sea and strong winds. Nothing to do except eat, drink, read, eat, sunbathe, eat etc……although I did mange an hour in the gym in the morning. Tuesday 12 February Costa Maya Mexico As the blister that I’d acquired in the hotel on the second day was still very sore I decided to visit the on-board doctor prior to going ashore at Cost Maya. When I got to the medical centre I saw a sign outside saying that a consultation with the physician involved a minimum charge of $145. Suddenly the pain was gone. Hallelujah! The message had provided the miracle cure and I returned to our cabin with a spring in my step: or at least not ... read more

Sunday 10thFebruary: The Big Easy aka New Orleans. We sailed up the Mississippi River during the night and were alongside the cruise ship terminal in Central New Orleans by normal wake-up time – although I’d been woken up much earlier by major engine vibrations as the ship manoeuvred up to the dock. After breakfast we got off the ship and spent 45 minutes clearing US Immigration then we were met by a lady tour guide who took us to a bus and a two hour tour of New Orleans: much of it spent in traffic delays as there were many parades being held in town to celebrate Mardi Gras. Our first stop was a cemetery: New Orleans is apparently famous for its cemeteries. Then off to City Park, a 1200 acre former plantation which was very ... read more

Saturday 9th February: somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico aboard the SS Norwegian Star. Thursday 7th February was another action packed day involving lying/sitting in the shade near the turquoise Caribbean waiting for the next meal. Somehow I managed to develop a couple of blisters on my feet which can only have come from walking to and from meals as that’s been my only activity so far: a new low in my “sporting” career. Leaving the hotel on Friday morning in order to join our cruise ship was extremely easy and well organised by Virgin Holidays. We only had to travel 2/3 miles from the hotel to the ferry port in Playa del Carmen in order to transfer to the offshore island of Cozumel where our cruise ship, the Norwegian Star, was docked; and as the ... read more

Wednesday 6th February: without wishing to appear overly biased on account of Caroline working for Virgin Atlantic our Virgin Holidays vacation to Cancun has got off to a terrific start. With our VA flight from Gatwick leaving at 12.30 pm on Tuesday 5th February we secured an excellent deal at the Ramada Hotel near Gatwick for the Monday night which included two weeks' free parking. When we arrived at Gatwick Airport our holiday package included access to VA's Vroom lounge which was better than any business class or first class lounge that I've ever used before. Then when we boarded the flight we were upgraded to Premium Economy. Eleven hours later we landed in Cancun and were met by a Virgin rep at the airport and were effortlessly transferred to our hotel in Xcaret (pronounced with ... read more

Monday 23rdJanuary: We didn’t play tennis as it was a warmer day than usual so we decided to get some sun down by the beach. There was a bit of a surprise when we arrived at the beach as the tide level had dropped by about 4 feet leaving the pontoons high and dry and a large expanse of coral exposed. I took the opportunity to head off along the exposed beach towards a nearby headland to see what lay beyond, and to have a look at the pools left behind by the receding tide. We had an early dinner and were in bed by 9pm on account of having to get up at 1.30am on the Tuesday morning as we were due to be picked up at 2.15 am for the bus journey to Nuweiba ... read more

Friday 20thJanuary, Saturday, Sunday On the Friday morning we were picked up from the hotel and taken to Old Sharm, the original fishing port, for a trip on a “submarine”: actually a high tech glass bottomed boat. Old Sharm which is about 10 miles from our hotel is set on a very nice, well sheltered and almost circular sandy bay. The glass bottomed boat was very good in that passengers had seats below deck and below sea level where we could sit and watch the passing marine life and corals. The trip lasted for about an hour and the captain navigated very skilfully taking the boat seemingly within inches of the coral outcrops. Unfortunately the photos taken through the glass windows didn’t come out too well. Afterwards we decided to stay and explore a bit ... read more
