Tuesday, our last day in Vienna, was kind of a wash. We visited the Czech Consulate to see about Ava’s visa and bought train tickets for the ride home. Mom decided she wanted to take the train instead of the bus, and I didn’t argue because I love trains. When we finished handling these business items, it was late afternoon. Mom and Ava wanted to rest, but I was dead set against it. It was our last night in Vienna and I was going to force all three of us to have some fun! We caught the subway to Hero’s Square and did some window-shopping. We bought some post cards and various items and had a leisurely stroll around this beautiful area. I also was successful in getting us hopelessly lost. We were really hungry and ... read more

“I live in those apartments right there. My phone is in my apartment. I will get it. Please wait here.” The woman used hand gestures to show us not to move from the spot where we stood on the corner. We had gotten off the Student Agency bus in Vienna and walked around for about thirty minutes trying to find our hotel. We knew we were at the right station because we bought tickets for the subway, went into the subway, and realized we were already at the correct subway station. But where was the hotel? We had asked a woman walking past. She stopped and examined mom’s hieroglyphics. “Do you have a number?” She had asked. Mom explained that we do have the number, but that she was hesitant to use our American phone while ... read more

I woke up this morning with a sore throat and aching ears and body. I felt terrible but really wanted to take Ava to the “giant aquarium” advertised online. So, I took a hot bath and we headed out. The aquarium was only a 12 minute bus ride from our dormitory. Unfortunately, it was not as giant as we had hoped. Instead, it was one room that had been made to replicate a rain forest. The lower part of the room was a tunnel under the water that we saw above. We really liked it, but would have appreciated more of it. There was also a little gift shop and a café. I bought Ava some glow in the dark dolphins to put on the wall by her bed. The ladies at the café gave her ... read more

Today I gave 4 back-to-back lessons at a school near the magistrate building. The lesson was on American Holidays, and I like to show a few videos from my facebook page to help the students identify with certain holidays. One of the videos I like to show is of Ava’s first Easter egg hunt. I remember that Easter really well. John was living with Ava and me in Ann Arbor and mom and dad had come down to stay for the holiday. Dad and I hid the eggs together and we all watched Ava find the eggs. There’s a part in the video where she asks, “Are the eggs near the tree, Papa?” and it really melts my heart. We all miss my dad so much. Today is his birthday. I’ve never met another man with ... read more

I have to say that while I enjoyed the breakfast at Hotel Aron, this one is better. It has everything Hotel Aron had, but also has amazing croissants, fresh mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, fresh basil, cucumber slices, and fruit salad. Also, there were various types of yogurt and the coffee was really good. Like Hotel Aron, there was light lunch meats, cheeses, breads, muesli, and other things. We definitely started our day off right with that breakfast! Then we headed into Old Town, Dresden on the tram without a hitch. When we got to Old Town, we were hit with a chilling wind that was rough on all of us except Ava. I knew it would be cold and put long johns under her clothes to keep her warm. We decided to see Zwinger Palace before ... read more

4 a.m. is early no matter where you are in the world. That’s what time I woke up this morning. Since we did laundry last night and had clothing hung all over the room, I had to wait until this morning to pack. We were able to pack, tidy up our room, pack a lunch (thank you mom for doing that), and still make it to the main bus stop on time. We took the bus from Hradec Králové to Prague without a problem. Then we realized that the bus to Germany didn’t come to the same station. We had to take the subway to Florenc in order to catch the next bus. We’re acquired a steep learning curve and actually purchased our subway tickets before getting on the subway this time. Of course, we didn’t ... read more

It’s Friday morning and we’re on our way to Prague. I haven’t had time to blog this week, but I’m ok with that. Unfortunately, Hradec was hit with snow that started on Monday morning and continued through Tuesday night. This week, I felt blissfully lost for most of the week. I took the wrong bus on Tuesday morning and was late for my meeting with Pavla. To make matters worse, I walked out of the apartment without my phone, so I couldn’t text her to let her know I would be late. I also forgot about a few things I was supposed to have done this week (lesson preparation) and felt pretty “loserish” about it. I feel like I made up for it with a few great lessons. Jayna and Katka were really supportive this week ... read more

Ugh! I’m tired. Tired from doing and taking the big world into a relatively small mind. We had another excellent breakfast at Hotel Aron (Muesli, Yogurt, coffee, sweet cakes, boiled eggs, and bread with jam). Mom still hasn’t given into the liverwurst. Then, we packed everything back into our bags and headed to Florenc Station. There main bus station building has a baggage room where you can pay $2.50/bag until midnight. The guy who works there seems to really hate his job, but he guarantees safety and that is really all we need. We gladly gave him our luggage and headed to the Prague’s Jewish Quarter. The Jewish Cemetery was easy to find. Buried there were people who lived in the ghetto all the way back to the 1800s. There was a special group of people ... read more

We had an amazing breakfast at Hotel Aron this morning and headed quite expertly to the Florence station. Then jumped on a tram that went near Charles Bridge. We stopped at a souvenior shop and I bought Ava a small set of Matroshka dolls. Those are the Russian dolls that go inside of each other. The girl at the counter gave her a free sheet of Prague stickers, which was really nice of her. We had a short walk along the river and then headed over Charles Bridge in the morning sunlight. It was mostly empty and very beautiful. Ava had given me the stickers to hold, then taken them back again, and then gave them to me to hold again. When she asked for the stickers back for the third time, I told her no, ... read more

"Wow! It looks like a magazine!" Ava's eyes were wide as we walked into St. Vitus Church. I have to agree, it was grandiose. The ceilings were high covered in ornate decorations. The front of the church had an amazing altar. There were ornate and brightly-colored stained glass windows covering half of the wall space. Mom and I spoke about royal weddings throughout history taking place in this church, and what amazing affairs they must have been. After all, St. Vitus is inside Prague Castle. We walked all around the castle, taking in the grandeur. Unfortunately, it was very cold outside. It was windy and had snowed on and off throughout the afternoon. When we first arrived to the castle, I was feeling famished. We decided to go into the first English-speaking restaurant that I found. ... read more
